My Santos Dumont 1913, came back from service, so a good reason to show some
Dumont passion here at the forum.
The watch was released in 2004 and was not serviced yet. Yes that was pretty stupid of me.
When I picked up the watch from the Boutique, it was like new again and running perfectly.
I usually ask not to polish the case, which was indeed not done, but still it looked better.
It's a small watch, witch quite some detail, so I take the hairline scratches rather for granted.
The re-issue of the 1913 model, has beautiful details, like the way the glass is set,
the Breguet styled hands and the crown.
Unlike most CPCP models the Dumont 1913 has no guiloche dial but a lacquered dial,
without the flower rosette.
There have been- and there still are a few Santos Dumont models in the catalogue,
but despite it's spectacular history, the model never became as popular as the Tank.
But the Tank is of course impossible to beat and since the commercial launch of the Dumont model
in 1906, the watch has been almost constantly in the catalogue.
Originally the model was made in 1904, for one of Louis Cartier's friends,
the aviator Alberto Santos Dumont.
- At the foot of the Eiffel Tower, Parisians raise their bowler hats as Alberto Santos-Dumont passes -
It was November 12th. 1906 that Santos Dumont succeeded in setting the first world record,
recognized by the Aero-Club De France by flying 220 metres in less than 22 seconds.
The model has had many different design changes. Different dials and different cases.
The vintage model pictured above and the re-issue of that model, pictured underneath
is quite different from the model that became well known in the eighties until about 2008.
The way the lugs melt into the shape of the case, is almost a straight line, while the model
that was released later, has a different and more common lug to case construction.
- 1997 Santos Dumont Limited Edition of 90 pc. for the 90th. birthday of the model -
One of the most beautiful Dumont models is the re-issue that was launched,
just before the Collection Privée was introduced.
Salmon dial, Breguet styled hands and a platinum case.
- Santos Dumont Platinum, the CPCP model as Cartier used it in the film l'Odyssee -
Pictured above, probably the most well known Santos Dumont model.
Before and during the CPCP collection the watch was available in yellow gold and platinum.
That's why identical models, but without the word Paris on the dial, can be found at auctions.
It's the same watch with the same movement.
Most popular Santos Dumont at the moment is the TV shaped model, that was released in 2004.
Available in yellow-, white- and pink gold the watch offers a larger case than the earlier
mentioned models and fits better in todays style, without being a large watch.
- Santos Dumont 2004, left the special dial version that was available during the first year -
The Santos Dumont Squelette is the high end current model, from the 'Fine Watchmaking
Collection' and the most interesting Santos Dumont that Cartier currently has to offer.
The watch comes in white gold, titanium and in pink gold and has a new by Cartier developed
mechanical 9611MC caliber.
The titanium version is ADLC treated and is black watch. Very cool & sporty looking!
ADLC was developed by Cartier during the research that was done for the Ballon bleu ID-ONE
and was commercially used for the first time on some Santos 100 models.
It gives a very nice satin looking and fingerprint resistance look.
I have an ADLC Santos 100 myself, use it for over a year now and I really like how the coating
behaves.
It still looks as new, no scratches at all, while the watch is worn in the gym and on the beach
quit often.
