Roland Iten is to belt buckles as independent watchmakers are to horology, i.e. he takes them to another level all together.
Why an expensive mechanical belt buckle? The same reason as an expensive mechanical watch.
I have always admired Roland Iten's buckles and admit that I felt a tinge of envy when I saw Wei Koh wearing one at the Geneva watch fair earlier in the year, but never expected to get a chance to try one for myself . . .well at Baselworld you should never say never!
I met up with Roland and Carol Iten and they lent me a steel belt buckle to try for the fair - well longer than the fair actually as I left before giving it back so that will give me an excuse to visit them in the near future to return it.
While it might appear complicated, the buckle is easy to use and its main advantage - besides the pleasure of wearing a belt buckle that costs more than most watches - is that you just move a lever to gain a bit more length, which makes sitting during a large meal much more comfortable.

How the buckle works.
And while I would not expect anybody to know that there was anything at all special about the belt buckle I was wearing,
on the train back from Basel a woman asked me if I knew Roland Iten by any chance . . . small world!
