The inaugural Salon QP watch exhibition was held over the 5th and 6th of November at One Marylebone on central London.

Brands participating included: Backes & Strauss, Blancpain, BRM, Bell & Ross,Charles Oudin, De Bethune, Girard-Perregaux, Graham, H. Moser & Cie, Harry Winston, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Ladoire, Linde Werdelin, Maurice Lacroix, Panerai, Parmigiani, Perrelet, Romain Gauthier, Romain Jerome, TAG Heuer and Vacheron Constantin.

One Marylebone was formally a Holy Trinity Church built in 1826-28 to the designs of Sir John Soane to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon.

While the sculpture outside added a splash of colour, I am not sure that it fits with the traditional architecture.

At night everything looks much better

The team from Frodshams talking to Peter Speake-Marin. Frodshams' new watch is about 6 months away, and you will want one (I do)

A good crowd readying and waiting to enter for the invitation-only opening evening

Much more relaxed and civilized once in, on the ground floor at least

Here's a Vacheron you won't miss

Bonhams had many great watches, but this beauty caught my eye.

The Harry Winston stand was full of surprises

Opus 9 and Histoire de Tourbillon

Opus 8 and Opus 3 (more on this next week)

Romain Gauthier

Demonstration of poising and regulating balances

De Bethune

I want, I want.

Romain Gauthier

Bell & Ross had so many models it was overwhelming

Ladoire had a very interesting presentation case and a superb, though very large, watch.

Blancpain

Maurice Lacroix's clever Memoire 1 looks nearly wearable from the top, but . . .

. . . it has serious height issues side on.

Perrelet

Perrelet's Turbine collection looks to be a hit for the brand

One thing shocked me when looking at watches at the Panerai stand . . .

. . .they don't look grossly over-sized anymore.

Linde Werdelin is an upcoming brand these days . . .

. . .and I suspect that it has more to do with making nice watches . . .

. . .than watch-borne instruments

Which would you prefer?

James Gurney (right), editor of QP magazine and organizer of SalonQP

Author of Masters of Contemporary Watchmaking, Micheal Clerizo was signing books and . . .

. . .attracting high-calibre visitors including Michel Parmigiani and . . .

. . . a collector with a beautiful . . .

. . . look at the page . . .

Roger Smith Series Two on his wrist (though I soon had it off)

Watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin, author Michael Clerizo and a clean-shaven watch journalist, Ken Kessler

BRM

Girard Perregaux

Parmigiani Fleurier

Romain - you will believe a man can fly - Jerome

Backes & Strauss

TAG Heuer

Tag V4

Graham

Moser & Cie

And that's all folks.

Wonderfully reported Ian. It made me wish I was there to see and feel all the stuff there.
But your report comes close to being there. Appreciate the time and effort.

Absolutely awesome report Ian. I had the invitation at home but unfortunately time and money prevented me from participating - next time I will be there for sure.

What was the attendance like? Is this an annual event?

It was packed both evenings, but understandably quieter during the day. If you want to see beautiful watches in a stress-free environment then the early afternoon is the time to go.

I am ashamed of concentrating on the skull watch when Bonhams had so many other superb vintage timepieces - including an original Polaris - but the fine detail in the small sculpture mesmerized me.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the excellent report and pics!! the finger smiley
Looking at the size of the watches from other brands, it's not surprising that Panerai watches do not look big anymore...winking smiley

Cheers!

avatar What Harry Winston loses financially on the Opus 3 Wim,
November 09, 2009 05:21AM
as I am sure that each watch has ended up costing much more than the initial price quoted - HW has not passed on the difference - they may well end up gaining in publicity.

I think that Harry Winston has earned itself a good few kudos for not giving up on a very demanding project and for sticking to their original commitment to Opus 3 collectors.
