Master Grand Reveil vs. IWC PortuguesePosted by mkgk1205
Hello,
I am very interested in purchasing Perpetual Calendar watch and 2 Watches caught my eye. Master Grande Reveil (ref. 163842a) from Jaeger and Portuguese (ref. 5022) from IWC. Jaeger is more affordable and as IWC is very respectful brand but I have noticed that, from my understanding from reading from many watch forums, Jaeger is more respectful brand than IWC. With that being said, I Would like to hear the opinions of these 2 watches. What would you choose between the two? The Grande Reveil uses the same perpetual calendar module as the IWC - the Kurt Klaus module, first presented in 1985. JLC reworks it slightly, but then adds an acoustic gong for a daily alarm, and is the only brand with the combination (and I happen to be very fond of it).
In the end, try them both on, play with their functions and see which one bites your heart harder. -Dean
Two excellent choices of the Perpetual Calendars and watchme has a nice summary of his opinions, which I am not disagreeable.
But since you asked your question in the Jaeger-LeCoultre forum, I would like to draw your attention to the rich history of Jaeger-LeCoultre as the true manufacture of fine watches - A house which is using in-house movements not only within the brand but has been the most important contributor to the history of Swiss haute horlogerie. Personally, i doubt you can go far wrong with either model, but since you asked it here, why not go for Jaeger? :-) Regards jaw
Hi mkgk, both JLC and IWC have good heritage and both watches you mentioned have great presence.
You can't go wrong with either watch but then again, put it on your wrist before you decide. Pictures are one thing and the feel of the watch is something else altogether. Price aside, I would sway a little towards JLC Master Grand Reveil as it has one more complication - the alarm which has been correctly pointed out that is probably the one and only perpetual with an alarm function. But all said and done, the watch on the wrist and how it sits will probably be the deciding factor. Good luck and do post the pix here if you finally choose one or the other.
