Jack,
first of all, thanks for asking if I think there are iconic pieces in the Glashütte Original range. It wasn't an easy question to be honest!
The first answer is easy, that is yes! I definitely think there are icons made at the Manufacture at the Altenberger Strasse 1 in Glashütte.
But which? Of course my opinion is a personal one and please Jack, Geo or others, give me yours if you do not agree!
I was thinking about the Sixties (Geo, I think this is your choice)...
Glashütte Original presented this new version of the Sixties at Baselworld 2007 and it's an important piece for the brand and the fans from that moment...
The next watch that came to mind was the Meissen. I was blown away when I had this piece in my hands for the first time...
This is real art in all it's simplicity, a real precious if I may say so. This is a watch with soul, emotions, hard work and the charisma of this watch gives me a feeling of warmth...I see myself sitting in a Chesterfield, near the open fire place with a glass of Rémy Martin Louis XIII in my right hand and a slowly burning Cohiba cigar in my left...thinking about the beauty of life and seeing the fire in the reflection of the golden case...
third watch that came to mind was the PanoMaticLunar...what to say. Timeless, pure German watchmaking, wearable in so many occasions...
here is a pic from our dear friend Jocke, Jocke, hope you don't mind I used this pic!
number four!
number four is still young...but like so many wines, which need aging to grow to their full beauty, this piece was already grown up right after it's birth...
the Chronometer, introduced at Baselworld 2009. What a watch!!!! This is, again, a watch that breathes German watchmaking.
If you would ask me, pick a watch from the Glashütte Original range, this would be my choice without a doubt. The watch is not the smallest, especially for my relatively small wrists, but still very wearable and never too much imvho...Love this piece!!!
look at the details...Yummie!
and the caliber 58-01 isn't bad either
so, four timepieces from the Glashütte Original Manufacture which all could be iconic timepieces if you ask me...
but which one is the winner, if we can call it that way. Of course this wasn't a contest but the number one, for me, is the Chronometer.
Although it's young it reflects what Glashütte Original stands for,
high-quality watchmaking, German precision, and exquisite design.
cheers, Wim
