Feeling Blue with Girard Perregaux

Hi everyone,

It's no secret that while some of us at Revolution and Revolution Online like the horologically cutting edge, like the new Urwerk Torpedo there is nonetheless a certain segment of our editorial population with tastes running to the more conservative. Well, maybe conservative is the wrong word. As with our recent look at the Grand Seiko we feel that it's possible to admire the creativity of brands like URWERK while at the same time respecting the efforts of companies like Girard Perregaux, which, while they may occasionally create flights of horological fancy like the JackPot Tourbillon, are also masters at the art of horological classicism --and experts at knowing what careful details make a classically oriented design really come alive on the wrist.

The newest addition to the GP 1966 lineup (every one of which we'd like to own, though we have a VERY soft spot for the Equation of Time) is the 1966 Blue Dial Chronograph. Though in our chat on the Glashuette Original forum about the GO Seventies watch some of us have expressed our disapprobation of blue dialed watches, I personally think in this instance it gives the white gold case of the 1966 Chrono just the pop it needs. Inside's the in-house column wheel automatic chronograph movement, GP caliber GPO30C0. A class act, inside and out, and if GP hasn't been on your radar of late, maybe it's time to make time to take a closer look at one of watchmaking's most venerable, creative, and classically beautiful manufacturers again.

GIRARD-PERREGAUX 1966 BLUE DIAL CHRONOGRAPH

This year, to celebrate its 220th anniversary, the Girard-Perregaux Manufacture has added an elegant touch of blue to the white gold chronograph in its Girard-Perregaux 1966 collection. This classic watch characterises the technical and stylistic expertise of a Brand forever in pursuit of perfection.

In 1966, Girard-Perregaux received the Centenary Prize from the Neuchâtel Observatory in recognition of its research in the field of precision. The Girard-Perregaux 1966 collection pays tribute to this spirit of innovation, and has become an icon of the Brand.

The clean lines of this model belie a sophisticated design and production process. Conceived in the Brand's workshops, the case and its lugs are designed for perfect comfort on the wrist and painstakingly finished to reveal the exquisite lustre of the white gold. The sunray brushed intense blue dial illuminates the applied numerals while the snailed engraved counters offer excellent readability.

Girard-Perregaux opted for a column wheel chronograph with a 30-minute counter and a central second hand. A tachymeter scale reinforces the character of the model.
The complexity of the movement can be admired through the transparent case-back. Comprising 338 components, this assiduously finished calibre was entirely developed and produced by the Manufacture.

Not every blue is the same

Very good looking classic Chronographe Jack, that I like a lot.
I think I am the one that said not to be in favor of blue dial, which is true in general.
But there are many blues and I must say that I like this dial a lot!
Very good readability.
Knowing GP's collection and movements, this is a superb watch!
Love the 40mm case too, finally we seem to go back to more wearable sized watches.

You said that many admire the creativity of brands like URWERK, while at the same time
respecting the efforts of companies like Girard Perregaux.
Very true in my case and I even take it a step further;
I absolutely love the collection of Hautlence and Urwerk,
but I can get very exited too when I see a good Nomos,
or more upscale the Girard Perregaux Full Calendar in white gold
a piece that I think was one of the high lights in GP's collection,
this year in white and last year in pink gold.

Thank you so much Jack for pointing the lights on GP, which as you correctly stated is one of the most classical brands around (without forgetting anyway more
unusual and sporty watches like the Seahawk collection).

This watch is beautiful and the blue dial jointly with the brushed numerals provides great readability. As many GPs, this is indeed a classic.
Only downside i find in it is that it reminds too closely a similar VC...But i admit that classical watches are generally very close looking and are details that make the difference.
In this case, it is the movement itself which makes the difference i think.

Thanks for sharing,

Thanks for sharing! Rarely seen, a blue dial and WG case combination by GP!

Cheers,
