Today, I received 4 wonderful images of the timepiece together with other masperpieces stored inside the prestigious Dresden's Green Vault. The images come at an opportune time when the watch is about to be delivered to their worldwide boutiques and authorised retailers, when it is about to delight Lange fans worldwide.

This watch is not just technically the best representation of Saxonia fine wathmaking, it is also an illustrious addendum to the history of Dresden watchmaking manufactured in Glashutte. So appropriately, the latest images from Lange was shot on location at the "Green Vault". The historic Green vault was Augustus the Strong's treasury in Dresden Castle. It was reopened in 2006 as a museum to display, amongst other treasures, over 3000 of historical masperpieces of jeweller's, sculptor's and horogical art.

In the two images below, the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar is side by side with the astronomical table clock by Jeremias Paff, made about 1690. The clock has no less than five dials, on which allegorical figures act as indicators of the time, and a complete calendar.





The next two photos are shot in front of a cabinet by Boas Ulrich around 1600. The ebony cabinet with rich adornments and partly gilded in silver.





Side by side, the astronomical clock, the Boas Ulrich cabinet and the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar are likely to be the historical masterpieces to be appreciated by future generations, perhaps also at the Green Vault?

The GRAND LANGE 1 won two first prizes in the "Classic Elegance" category at the gala event organised by Austrian daily "Die Presse". In the "Grand Complications" category, the DATOGRAPH UP/DOWN won two second prizes. Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid and Walter Lange, founder of Lange Uhren GmbH, accepted the prizes in Vienna on 11 December 2012. "With five additional awards, bringing the total to nine in the past 12 months, we can look back on a successful year in timekeeping," Wilhelm Schmid noted. "The prizes encourage us in our determination to never stand still and keep crafting the world's finest watches."

Once a year, the readers of the Austrian daily "Die Presse", of the Watchtime supplement circulated by Süddeutsche Zeitung and of the Chronos watch magazine, as well as visitors of the MunichTime and ViennaTime exhibitions, select the year's best watches. The gala in Vienna ranks among the most prestigious events of its kind in German-speaking Europe. Overall, A. Lange & Söhne has received more than 175 awards since 1994.

The enlightenment of the outsize date The limited GRAND LANGE 1 “Lumen” offers enlightenment: a semi-transparent dial exposes the ingenious mechanism of the first luminescent outsize date display by A. Lange & Söhne.



Legible even in the dark: GRAND LANGE 1 “Lumen” When it was first presented, it evoked excitement and kicked off a trend that soon found many imitators: the Lange outsize date. Together with the asymmetric dial, it elevated the LANGE 1 to the status of an icon of classic design. However, the secret behind the complex mechanism responsible for this unprecedented date display format remained hidden beneath the solid-silver dial. Now, the GRAND LANGE 1 with the Latin attribute “Lumen” reveals this secret. The name of the timepiece, which comes in a limited edition of 200 watches in platinum cases, says it all. Parts of its dial consist of semi-transparent sapphire crystal. Only the outer ring and the surfaces of the displays for hours and minutes as well as small seconds are made of blackened silver. The sapphire crystal surfaces reveal the disc mechanism of the first outsize date that glows in the dark. Additionally, the time and the power reserve are also legible in the dark.



The technical challenge encountered during the development of the GRAND LANGE 1 “Lumen” was to ensure maximum luminosity for the date display, even immediately after the daily switching operation. Lange’s product developers solved this issue in an exceptional way. While the tens cross was coated with a white luminous compound and subsequently imprinted with black numerals, the units disc consists of transparent glass imprinted with black numerals and rotates before a luminous background.




The sapphire crystal sections of the dial are treated with a special coating that blocks most of the visible spectrum of light. For the invisible UV light spectrum, however, the coating does not represent a barrier. Therefore, UV radiation can pass through to the luminous surfaces of the outsize date unhindered. This produces an interesting side effect: the date platform with its manually applied perlage, normally seen only by the watchmaker during the assembly process, is now visible to the owner as well. The small, overlapping circular graining produced by hand using a rotating abrasive peg is normally concealed underneath the dial.



The craftsmanship and virtuosity invested in he L095.2 manufacture movement, which is ssembled twice, can also be admired from the other side through the sapphire-crystal caseback. Indeed, the GRAND LANGE 1 "Lumen” radiates charisma from every angle.



Only last year, A. Lange & Söhne endowed the GRAND LANGE 1 with a totally new, manually wound calibre. The omission of the second mainspring barrel as well as the effective arrangement of the parts reduced the overall height of the calibre without any compromise in terms of power reserve, making it possible to transpose the graceful dial architecture of the LANGE 1 to the enlarged model. Limited-edition treasures successful at auction

A TOURBILLON "Pour le Mérite" and an 1815 MOONPHASE sold for substantial sums at Dr. Crott's auction in Frankfurt on the Main.

On 10 November 2012, two limited-edition watches made by A. Lange & Söhne in the years 1996 and 2000 changed hands. One watch enthusiast from Europe bid 248,000 euros for a TOURBILLON "Pour le Mérite" in platinum. Only 50 copies of this exceptional timepiece were made in the platinum version between 1994 and 1998. The price bid for watch number 20/50 was far higher than forecast. This timepiece by A. Lange & Söhne, which had hardly been worn, reached more than three times its original selling price.

Another bidder pushed up the price of a pink-gold version of the 1815 MOONPHASE, highly prized among collectors. At 19,200 euros, he paid double the original selling price. Only 250 examples of this version were ever made.

Only last May, a buyer at Dr. Crott's bid 330,000 euros for a special edition of the TOURBILLON "Pour le Mérite". Other models by A. Lange & Söhne, such as the LANGE ZEITWERK or the GRAND LANGE 1 "Luna Mundi", have attained similar extremely high prices at international auctions in the past.

In September 2007, A. Lange & Söhne opened the first shop of its own in Dresden. Near the famous Frauenkirche, the Manufaktur can be experienced in miniature. On the fifth anniversary of the founding, customers and friends of the brand came to offer their congratulations – and, while walking through the Zwinger Palace, Walter Lange came across his great-grandfather, Ferdinand A. Lange.

An exclusive celebration in the Dresden Zwinger Palace – some 80 guests took up the invitation of Dresden's A. Lange & Söhne Boutique on 7th September 2012 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the traditional brand's first branch. Among them was Walter Lange. The 88-year old company founder strolled through the historic city centre of Dresden with his guests, in the footsteps of his ancestors. This is where his great-grandfather, Ferdinand A. Lange, learnt the watchmaker's trade long ago, before moving away in 1845 to set up his own watch manufactory in Glashütte. Actors impersonated the famous watchmaker and his wife Antonia, conducting the guests from Dresden Castle through the Zwinger buildings to the Porcelain Collection, were the evening drew to a close with much conversation about A. Lange & Söhne.

On 26th September 2012, the Saxon watch brand A. Lange & Söhne opened its second boutique in the United Arab Emirates. On this occasion, a special edition limited to 30 pieces was presented. They will only be available in the seven A. Lange & Söhne boutiques worldwide.

The A. Lange & Söhne boutique in the Dubai Mall is the largest of the Saxon watch brand, with a sales floor of close to 2,000 square feet. As of 26th Sept¬ember 2012, watch aficionados can experience the prestigious Saxon watchmaking brand first-hand. Guests at the inauguration ceremony were also introduced to the new limited edition model which will only be available in the A. Lange & Söhne boutiques: the LANGE ZEITWERK HANDWERKSKUNST. Three years ago, A. Lange & Söhne presented the LANGE ZEITWERK, the first mechanical

watch that featured a constant-force escapement to achieve a precisely jumping numer-

als display. Since then, this winner of multiple awards has ranked among the brand’s

biggest successes. As a limited edition with the designation HANDWERKSKUNST, the time-

piece has risen to a new level: Exquisite case, dial, and movement decorations as well as a

Glashütte lever escapement stand for the artisanal and horological proficiency of the

Saxon manufactory. They constitute the tradition-steeped complement to the numerous

technical innovations inside the exquisite masterpiece.

The dial in black-rhodiumed white gold is endowed with an elaborate tremblage

engraving. The engraver manually guides a specially crafted lining burin

across the surface in precisely choreographed multi-directional movements.

This produces a delicate and highly vivid granular texture. A formidable challenge

for the engravers: The curved A. Lange & Söhne logo and the filigreed lettering of

the power-reserve indicator remain standing in sharply contoured relief.

Decorated with linear graining, the time bridge in rhodiumed German silver con-

trasts with the dark dial. Used traditionally at Lange for frame elements such as

bridges and cocks, German silver identifies it as part of the movement ensemble.

Skilfully integrated in the dial, the time bridge embraces all time indications: the

large white numerals of the hour and minute displays as well as the grey

seconds dial in solid silver. The interaction of precious metals culmi-

nates with the platinum case. The A. Lange & Söhne signature, the case number and the

edition serial number on the caseback are hand-engraved as well.


A glance through the sapphire-crystal caseback of the LANGE ZEITWERK HANDWERKS-

KUNST reveals the highly complex manufacture calibre L043.4, which apart from classic

elements such as the three-quarter plate and screwed gold chatons also stands out with a

kaleidoscope of artistic decorations: The three-quarter plate made of untreated German

silver is endowed with a granular surface and hand-engraved lettering. The A. Lange &

Söhne signature on the mainspring barrel is executed as a relief engraving. This tech-

nique requires the artist to chisel the motif out of the material, making it look as if it had

been embossed. The balance and escape wheel cocks are also decorated with a special

free-hand engraving. The upper side of the bridge for the constant-force escapement is

embellished with black polish, the most elaborate and time-consuming finissage technique.

The Glashütte lever escapement pays special tribute to 19 century Lange traditions. Its

lever and escape wheel are made of hardened 18-carat gold. The advantage of the mate-

rial was its insensitivity to magnetic fields. The antimagnetic steel alloys commonly used

today were not available then. The lever is designed to remain well balanced in any posi-

tion. The pallets are concealed and slightly curved to reduce the friction between them

and the escape wheel. Perfectly executed, all these subtle design characteristics contrib-

ute to provide the precision of the watch. It was an appealing challenge for the current

generation of master watchmakers to resort to one of Ferdinand A. Lange’s most impor-

tant inventions.


The exclusive collector’s item is limited to 30 watches that are distributed exclusively

through the seven A. Lange & Söhne boutiques worldwide. The LANGE ZEITWERK

HANDWERKSKUNST will be launched at Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping

venues, when Lange’s latest boutique is inaugurated there on 26 September 2012.

More space for watchmakers A. Lange & Söhne expands its premises in Glashütte

The ground-breaking ceremony on 5 September marked the start of construction on the Manufaktur’s new annex. The new building provides more than 11,000 square metres of additional space for more improved processes.

The global demand for A. Lange & Söhne's exquisite timepieces is constantly growing. Accordingly, the successful Saxon watch brand has constantly expanded in the past years. It is the largest employer in the town of Glashütte, providing jobs for more than 500 people. Their workshops are spread across several buildings. The new annex will accommodate the movement assembly departments and the machines for the production of the delicate movement components in a single complex. Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid welcomes the start of the construction works: "The annex was long overdue. The new building will allow us to clearly improve production processes and working conditions."

The two-part extension has a gross floor area of 11,300 square metres. A skybridge across Altenberger Strasse will connect the new building with the "Lange II", currently the largest production venue. On the side facing the street, the production of the movement components will be accommodated on three floors. The rear wing of the building provides watchmaker workshops on five levels. The double walk-through façade has a climate-control function and allows distraction-free tours in these zones. With its discreet design, the new building blends in well with the existing ensemble and takes the architectural geographical particularities of the area into account. The geothermal heat pump used for heating, cooling, and hot water contributes to the ecological soundness of the manufacturing operations. The building stands on 70 concrete piles. Driven into the ground to a depth of up to 20 metres, they constitute a solid foundation. The structural work is scheduled to begin this coming spring and is supposed to be finished within two and a half years. Lange will invest a two digit million amount.

The event was a good opportunity to view the latest follow-up to the cult iconic Datograph from A Lange & Söhne and the perfect moment to meet up with the new owner of Sincere Fine Watches.

It was Sincere who brought Lange to Asia in 1996 as the exclusive distributor and in many ways it was also Sincere who cultivated the strong appreciation for Lange timepieces in our region. Significantly, Singapore was also the first country in the world to have enjoyed this highest end haute horlogerie outside of Germany.

The recent ownership transition of Sincere Fine Watches has caused some uncertainties and there are speculations that this leading fine watch purveyor may lose brands like Patek Philippe and Rolex by next year. It is believed that Rolex and Patek both have unstated policy of not allowing backdoor takeover of dealerships, so the speculations are hardly surprising.

What is disturbing are the vicious rumours created and spread by ill-intentioned parties that Sincere will also lose Lange's now exclusive dealership, and the strong support expressed by Lange Uhren's International Sales Director Daniel Rogger at the event comes at an opportune time and at the same time, reassuring.

The New GRAND LANGE 1 and the Five-Minute Clock

The Five-Minute Clock above the stage of the Semper Opera House in Dresden represents a high point of Saxon clock making artistry. Its digital indication was revolutionary at the time, and has been indicating the exact time – visible even from the back row – during all performances of musical masterpieces since 1841. About 150 years later, it inspired A. Lange & Söhne in the creation of another world premiere: The LANGE 1, with the first ever outsize date indication in a series-production watch. The Lange outsize date is also a characteristic feature of the new GRAND LANGE 1, which is about to come onto the market, providing a good opportunity to revisit the history behind the famous twin apertures.


GRAND LANGE 1 and the Five-Minute-Clock of the Semper Opera: Linked by Tradition

“A clock that can be read clearly from all seats” – This was what King Frederick Augustus II of Saxony ordered to be built for the auditorium of his new court opera house. 150 years ago, the royal command resulted in a timepiece that is extraordinary in every respect: The Five-Minute Clock of the Semper Opera House. The groundbreaking design was the work of the Dresden clock maker Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes, genius apprentice-master and mentor to Ferdinand A. Lange. Together they created one of the world’s first digital clocks.

The idea was born out of necessity. There was very little space available above the proscenium arch. A round dial would not have provided the equired legibility in the darkened auditorium. It was therefore decided to create a structure without precedent, involving two counter-rotating drums. In a magnificently decorated double aperture high above the stage, they show the hours and the minutes, the latter in intervals of five. The clock was a huge success, and gave Ferdinand A. Lange the courage to take the even bolder step of setting up his own manufacture.

A century and a half later, the double aperture with the large numbers was to celebrate a brilliant “comeback”. As the first outsize date in a series-production watch, it was positioned at the top on the right among the off-centre displays of the LANGE 1 dial. With its striking design it soon became the face of the brand, creating an important chapter in the history of A. Lange & Söhne. Today, it is undoubtedly regarded as one of the classic watches of the 20th century.

With the GRAND LANGE 1, the movement has been a totally redeveloped to provide a pleasingly flat design. With a diameter of 40.9 millimetres, the case (available in rose and yellow gold or platinum) is only 8.8 millimetres high, providing an extremely harmonious ratio of width to height. In addition it has been possible to transfer the precisely balanced dial arrangement of the LANGE 1 to the larger model without any overlapping. The importance the Lange product developers attach to the principle of fidelity of scale is demonstrated even in the smallest details: The Lange outsize date, the hands and even the solid gold appliques have been increased in the same proportion as the case.



Although the height of the movement is only 4.7 millimetres, the GRAND LANGE 1 has an impressive power reserve of 72 hours. To save space, the movement has only one barrel. Inside the elaborately hand-decorated and twice-assembled Lange manufacture calibre L095.1, a balance spring made in-house ensures maximum precision.

The much-discussed demographic transformation in Europe is causing a shortage of up-and-coming staff in many spheres. Increasingly, it is driving young people into service-sector jobs. Yet it is precisely the manual trades that are a goldmine. In Saxony, home of the watch brand A. Lange und Söhne, a virtue is made of necessity. Back in 1997, the company opened its own training school for watchmakers. Since then, it has trained over a hundred watchmakers, who now work in a wide range of positions in the manufacture. In addition to this training centre within the company, A. Lange & Söhne are also investing in multimedia communication with young people via the Internet.

The Footbag Juggler

With infinite patience, Christopher Schillem sews different pieces of cloth together with needle and thread. When the object is almost finished, he fills it with pellets through a small opening. Just two or three more practised hand moves, and the “footbag” is ready. To 21-year-old Lange trainee and footbag championship runner-up Christopher Schillem, the fashionable sport of footbag and the watchmaking have a lot in common. “A friend who was watching me sew a little cloth bag recommended that I go into watchmaking,” he recalls. The little fabric balls that he juggles with hands and feet, never letting one fall, are composed of one or more dozen small pieces of cloth. So to make them, a steady hand and great patience are essential. The young man, now in his second year of training at Lange’s school of watchmaking, possesses both these qualities.






Christopher Schillem works with a sure touch, both in his leisure pursuits and at the watchmaker’s workbench.

After leaving school, he wanted a job that was out of the ordinary, and he considers that he has found it with A. Lange & Söhne, “even if it’s often hard to discuss what the job involves with friends and relations.” They roll their eyes when he goes into technical details. In fact, Christopher did just the same before his training. At the “Career Start” fair in Dresden, he met some trainees from the traditional manufacture in Saxony, and had his first opportunity of taking a practice watch movement in his hand at a watchmaker’s bench and manipulating the screws.


Firmly on Course with a Soapbox

His fellow-trainee Linda Feine, too, has always enjoyed working with her hands. While at school, she made second place in a soapbox race at the wheel of a metal soapbox that she had built herself. So she was keen to learn a trade that did not involve sitting at a desk all day. “My father is a real technology fan, and he took me to a training fair because he really wanted to see Lange’s information stand,” the 20-year old relates. Linda was fascinated, and sent in an application to the traditional firm. From her own experience, she advised her younger sister, who is hoping to be a doctor, to acquaint herself thoroughly in advance with the content of her dream profession. “Because people often have almost no idea what the job is actually about.”

Tanja Ziesche describes the career of the watchmaker as “a dream job for real”. The twenty-one-year-old found out plenty about her desired career in good time. She is in her third year of training, and has just passed her final examination. “The training at Lange completely surpassed my expectations,” she says. “Working with such unusual and fragile materials is an exciting challenge. And I like the way each of us trainees is individually stretched according to our strengths.” What she really intended to do after she finished school was to study art, but “I didn’t feel it was down-to-earth enough for me,” she recalls. She learnt about the watchmaker’s trade from a flyer published by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and put in an application to A. Lange & Söhne.

A Hint from the Maths Teacher

Work experience can help to gain insights – an opportunity that A. Lange & Söhne gives school students during the school holidays. Jakob Kupke, 18, was keen to take up the offer. His maths teacher had given him the hint. “She came from Glashütte,” explains Jakob, who was already keen on handicrafts as a child. He applied for work experience and training at the same time, and received an invitation to take the aptitude test. This quickly revealed that he had the right capabilities for a watchmaking career, so that two months later he was able to sign his agreement of traineeship.

“We use the local fairs to help young people get to know more about the watchmaker's craft,” explains Katja König, head of training. A. Lange & Söhne have been training watchmakers at their in-house vocational school since 1997. But trade fairs and advertisements are no longer enough on their own to reach suitable applicants. “Many young people these days get their information about training opportunities online,” says Katja König. So early in June 2012, she invited the creators of the “azubot” Internet portal to the training school to make a film during the course. It will be shown on the www.azubot.de Web site from August 2012 – keyword: “Watchmaker”.

Apart from watchmaking training, since 2003 A. Lange & Söhne have also been offering a three-and-half-year training course for toolmakers, which has already been successfully completed by five young people. They have learnt to make tools and devices for watchmaking in a variety of metals.

The task for the participants of the F. A. Lange Excellence Award 2012: To discover the art of fine watchmaking with curiosity and enthusiasm. Eight young watchmakers from Austria, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA line up for the 10,000 euros prize money. In return, they have to construct a date display on the basis of an ETA 6498 movement. A. Lange & Söhne is sponsoring the award for the third time in a row.



From 16 to 20 July 2012 the participants used the opportunity for getting exclusive insights into the art of fine watchmaking made by A. Lange & Söhne. In several workshops they learned details about finish techniques, like flat polish, perlage or engraving and the Lange way of assembling a movement. To experience the art of fine watchmaking they engraved a balance cock and assembled a Lange calibre. Martin Schetter, chief product designer at A. Lange & Söhne, supervised the group and explained the philosophy of Lange design.

A very special unique piece of A. Lange & Söhne has found a new owner at the 85th watch auction of the renowned auction house Dr. Crott on 12th May 2012 in Frankfurt: a TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” with a reduced platinum case and a black dial that was sold in 1996.



At the price of EUR 330.000 a Lange TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” has changed its owner last Saturday in Frankfurt. With this high amount the unique piece was far beyond the value that experts of the renowned auction house Dr. Crott had expected. Indeed, the exceptional masterpiece of A. Lange & Söhne fetched nearly the fivefold of the original retail price from 1996. It is number 45 out of a total of 50 pieces in platinum, a unique piece within this limited edition. The TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” with the movement number 353 is a custom-made product with a case diameter reduced from 38,5 to 36 millimetres and a black dial with applied bevelled lozenge indexes instead of the usual silvered face of the standard platinum model. These individualisations have been made on personal request of the first owner.

The auction catalogue of Dr. Crott named an estimated value between EUR 190.000 and 240.000 for this complication. Watch collectors from all over the world had expressed their interest. The auction result is the highest ever reached by a Lange TOURBILLON „Pour le Mérite“ since the first presentation of the model in 1994.'

Timepieces from A. Lange & Söhne on rocks and minerals from Saxony provide a reminder of the origins of the Federal State’s wealth and culture.

A long way below the Ore Mountains – the homeland of A. Lange & Söhne – hidden treasures await discovery. At present geologists are exploring probably one of the largest tin deposits in the world. As early as the Middle Ages enormous silver finds triggered the “First Mining Rumours” – the first silver fever – in the Federal State. The Earth’s treasures formed the basis of an unprecedented cultural and scientific period of blossoming and also the wealth of the Saxon Sovreign Electors (Kurfürsten). Major innovations such as the discovery of European porcelain in Meißen and masterpieces of craftsmanship occurred in this period such as those which can still be admired today in the “Green Vault” of the Dresden Royal Palace. The Saxon precision watchmaking industry of the 18th century also has its roots in this development.

Amongst the many famous Dresden watchmakers of that period, there was one who stands out because of his forward-looking thoughts and actions: it is Ferdinand A. Lange, who brings watchmaking to the Ore Mountains in 1845. This was a time when the silver mines in the Eastern Ore Mountains had long been abandonned and the people were suffering from poverty and hunger. With his visionary concept of a new line of business he laid the foundations for the second economic boom in the region. The circle closes here.

The attractive combination of timepieces from the current collection of A. Lange & Söhne and rocks and minerals from the Ore Mountains links the origins of wealth and culture in the Middle Ages to the modern Saxon precision watchmaking of the 21st century. The subjects originate from the geological collections of the Technical University of the Saxon mining town of Freiberg. With the “terra mineralia” in the Freudenstein Castle Museum it possesses the largest and most beautiful exhibition of minerals in Germany with more than 3,500 minerals, precious stones and meteorites since 2008. Numerous works of art of the Saxon Court were created during previous centuries by talented craftsmen from these and other rocks and minerals originating from the Ore Mountains.


LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR on serpentinite

The LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR, launched in January 2012, combines two classic compli-cations in the expressive LANGE 1 design: a perpetual calendar and a tour¬billon with patented stop seconds.

The serpentinite from Zöblitz in the Ore Mountains is characterised by snake-like patterns and interesting shades of colour ranging from black to green to red. A large number of works of art made of garnet serpentinite from Zöblitz, which contains black garnet inclusions, were created for the court of Saxon Sovreign Electors from the 16th to 19th century.


LANGE 1 TIME ZONE on agate

With an innovative home and time zone display as well as a city ring the LANGE 1 TIME ZONE is the per¬fect companion for frequent flyers and cosmopolitans.

Agate has been appreciated since ancient times as a semi-precious stone. There are significant deposits only a few kilometres from the Lange manufactory, which had already been discovered at the beginning of the 18th century. They have a special feature: the stone has been crushed through movements in the Earth’s crust and is therefore described as ruin agate.


DATOGRAPH UP/DOWN on topaz

The DATOGRAPH UP/DOWN in a platinum case enlarged to a diameter of 41 millimetres offers a power reserve extended to 60 hours, which is clearly displayed by the UP/DOWN indicator at 6 o’clock.

Topaz from the Ore Mountains is sometimes also described as a “Saxon diamond”, as it sparkles so much when smoothed. Stones with topaz were discovered in Altenberg close to Glashütte when excavating for tin in the 1960s and they are the only ones in the world in this size and formation. However, they are not suitable for making jewellery because of the numerous cracks.


GRAND LANGE 1 on zinnwaldite

Elegant proportions characterise the appearance of the GRAND LANGE 1, which was presented for the first time in January 2012 with altered dimensions and a new inner life.

The shiny, silvery zinnwaldite contains lithium, which is used in a variety of ways in modern technology. Once again searches are underway for this raw material in the Ore Mountains. Lithium has the lowest density of the solid elements. The zinnwaldite which was formed during a magmatic phase is surrounded by light feldspar.


SAXONIA THIN on zinnwaldite

With a height of only 5.9 millimetres, the SAXONIA THIN is the thinnest watch ever crafted by the traditional Saxon watchmaker. It has also been available in white gold since 2012.

LANGE 1 on amethyst

The LANGE 1 is no more and no less than the mo¬dern successor to previous masterpieces from A. Lange & Söhne. It has been the cornerstone for the successful comeback of the traditional brand since 1994.

Magical powers were ascribed to amethyst owing to its violet colour. It was supposed to protect against the intoxicating effects of wine when worn as a charm. It has been excavated in the Ore Mountains since the 16th century and used to make jewellery.

The watchmaking charm of the LANGE 1 MOON¬PHASE lies in the continuous movement and therefore realistic display of the waxing and waning moon.

This seam with silver was found in the Himmelsfürst mine in Brand-Erbisdorf. It was formerly the most important silver mine in the Ore Mountains. As early as 1168 the first silver ore was found in the region around Freiberg, but mining ended for the time being in 1968. Approximately ten grams of the revered precious metal can be obtained from one kilogram of Saxon silver ore.

The link between the Mathematics and Physics Salon in the Dresden Zwinger and A. Lange & Söhne has historic roots.

As a sponsor of the Dresden State Art Collections, A. Lange & Söhne has been supporting the eminent museum complex since 2006. Within the scope of an agreement that extends the partnership until 2015, the company's future commitment will focus more actively on the Mathematics and Physics Salon, which after renovations and enlargements is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2013. A. Lange & Söhne to Sponsor Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este

For the first time, the Saxon watch brand A. Lange & Söhne is to sponsor the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, a worldwide beauty contest for classic automobiles, to take place from 25 to 27 May 2012 in Cernobbio on the shores of Lake Como. The Concorso d’Eleganza is considered to be the most traditional and elegant competition of its kind.

Founded in 1929, the event has evolved since its revival in the 1990s to become the most important event for connoisseurs of high-quality historic cars. Besides the classics, prototypes of new vehicles are also awarded prizes, with a particular focus on design and elegance. Besides the aesthetic criteria, the historical significance of the vehicles also plays a major role in the evaluation process. Bordering Lake Como, the Villa d’Este luxury hotel is the exclusive setting for the event. The winner of the “Best of Show” category – the most important prize of the contest – will be presented with a one-of-a-kind cuvette edition of the LANGE 1 TIME ZONE. The dust cover of the hunter-cased watch has been adorned with an engraving designed specially for the occasion. The Central European Time (CET) zone is represented by the town of Como on the city ring around this time-zone watch.

The winner in the category “Best of Show” will receive a one-of-a-kind cuvette of the LANGE 1 TIME ZONE, On the dial of the LANGE 1 TIME ZONE hunter case with special engraving, CET is represented by Como.

And Watch connoisseurs and friends of the brand in Saxony will be the first to experience the latest highlights of Lange’s watchmaking artistry at close quarters. From 11 to 19 February, the new releases collection will be on show at the A. Lange & Söhne boutique, near the Church of our Lady (Frauenkirche) in Dresden. All but a home match. Further venues and dates for the three-month tour are Tokyo (2 to 9 March), Seoul (26 March to 1 April), Shanghai (9 to 13 April), Hong Kong (16 to 22 April) and then, on the occasion of the openings, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Lange 1 is not just the most popular Lange model but to many hard core Lange fans, is also the model which is most representative of A Lange & Sohne as a brand in the top echelon of haute horlogerie. For those who rightfully respect Lange 1, the design was amongst other people, the brainchild of one of the most respectable personalities in the watch industry, the late Gunther Blumlein.

Gunther Blumlein was the chief of LMH, the holding company controlling IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Lange before the Richemont takeover and he is also the chief architect for the rebirth of modern Lange. One of the fundamental basic of the Lange1 design was the rare (then unusual) off-centre design and Gunther Blumlein's obsession that no hands should ever overlap each other at any moment for instant legibility. while this fundamental rule has been breached by Lange itself in several Lange 1 models at times when they were misguided, the intention to respect Gunther Blumlein is serious within the Lange management.

With the off-centre design and the non-overlapping hands, the free space available to the creative Lange 1 designers become severely limited. This is the reason why Lange 1 tourbillon cage is so small and the problem bothered Gunther Blumlein so much that he once predicted that making a true Lange 1 perpetual calendar is a near impossibility, although it was something Lange should strive for. Knowing Gunther Blumlein wasn't a person who understand the words "giving up", credit should be given to the Lange technical team to realise Gunther Blumlein's dream posthumously, more than a decade after his passing.

To solve the limited free-space problem, Lange invented the ingenious "rotating peripheral month ring", the first ever implemented in a wristwatch. The underside of the ring has recesses of different depths for the respective durations of each month and features and innovative sampling mechanism. This innovative rotating month ring, indicated by a fixed traingula arrow at 6 o'clock is currentlypatent pending.

What's more amazing is the fact that despite the Big date, the moonphase disc, the leap year disc and the rotating month discs - all of which are kind of energy consuming are reliability and impressively jumping instantaneously at the turn of the right midnight, a technical feat made more impressive by the brains at Lange.

And for those who desire more complications, it also comes with an added bonus of a tourbillon. While a tourbillon is always welcome, I can't help thinking that if there is ever a version of this amazing watch without the tourbillon complication, the 201x Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar will be the most "Lange" watch ofvall the Langes!
