TAG Heuer unveils an incredible double tourbillon. This is NOT a double-axis tourbillon, but two tourbillons. The first regulates the time of the watch and is a one-minute tourbillon, beating at 4Hz. But the second tourbillon regulates the 1/100th-of-a-second chronograph and beats at an incredible 360,000vph. It rotates at five seconds per revolution, or a dizzying 12 times per minute, and it also can be stopped and started. This tourbillon has no cage, but still ascribes to the basic technical blueprint of the tourbillon. The time-only tourbillon has a power reserve of 45 hours, while the 1/100th-of-a-second chronograph has a power reserve of 80 minutes.

It’s just the beginning of the 2012 Basel Fair and already Tudor has launched two of the most exciting sports watches of the fair. We’ll start our coverage with what I believe is one of the world’s best dive watches.

TUDOR PELAGOS

This is what all diving watches should be. Designed with a clarity of vision and a design purity that is simply charming but combined with some of the most useful innovations we’ve ever seen assembled in one watch.

1) Titaniun: The entire case and bracelet of the watch is fabricated from titanium, a material, which is not only incrediblly strong and lightweight but is extremely resistant to the corrosion of seawater. For a long time, Titanium has been our preferred case material for sports watches because, when scratched, an oxide forms on top of the exposed metal, ‘healing’, so to say, the scratch. Combine that, with its feather-light weight, and you can craft a muscular sports watch that is also incredibly comfortable. (Too bad Rolex’s Deep Sea doesn’t come in a titanium version

2) Ceramic bezel: Using the Cerachrom technology pioneered by Rolex, Tudor creates a remarkable new look by micro-ball blasting the surface of the ceramic to endow it with a stealthy, matt finish.

3) Luminous bezel markers: Yes, that’s correct; Tudor has out-Rolexed Rolex, by creating the first luminous bezel for the company since the iconic (but slightly radioactive) Bakelite bezel from the GMT model 6542. A fantastic way to tap into the history of Tudor’s parent brand while offering an incredibly pragmatic level of visibility for the critical elapsed dive-time indication. Tudor is the second luxury Swiss company to make a luminous bezel - the first being Blancpain – but, while Blancpain uses a sapphire layer to cover its bezel, here, the luminous material is totally integrated into the ceramic bezel. 4) Helium Escape Valve: This was first seen in the venerable COMEX 5514 Sea Dwellers and was created to ensure that helium trapped inside watches would be able to escape during decompression.

5) Retro Modern design: Check out the beautiful Snow Flake hands and square markers; a wonderful tribute to Tudor’s iconic Snow Flake subs MODEL 94110. Do note the attention to detail in the incredibly sexy bevels on the lugs of the Pelagos case, a tribute to the lugs found on the old Big Crown subs like the MODEL 7924.

6) Intelligent clasp: On the titanium bracelet when you extend the diver’s link and strap of the watch over the neoprene suit, you also activate a spring-loaded mechanism that allows the bracelet to contract and expand as your neoprene suit contracts and expands according to your dive depth. This is the first intelligent clasp we’ve seen on a dive watch and is truly a market leader in its execution and functionality.

A diving tool par excellence, the new TUDOR Pelagos is a fusion of technical mastery and mechanical reliability. It is also a proud reference to several style codes that have punctuated TUDOR’s history and left their mark on some of the company’s most iconic models. Capitalizing on this heritage, the Pelagos goes even further, inviting TUDOR to explore the silent world in a new dimension.

Waterproof to a depth of 500 metres (1640 feet), this superlative watch has a case with a diameter of 42 mm. Made entirely of titanium and completely satin-finished – resulting in a special sheen and a rugged look – it is an aesthetic expression of the power of this deep-sea instrument. The case is equipped with a helium valve (necessary to absorb unpredictable variations in pressure) marked GAS ESCAPE VALVE on the side of the straight-edged case. It is enhanced by a unidirectional rotatable bezel, with a matt black ceramic disc and luminescent numerals, which is thick enough to ensure excellent grip and ease of handling. Even in extreme conditions, perfect readability is assured by generous hour markers and luminescent “snowflake” hands. An original double-bevelled flange around the dial incorporates the triangular, rectangular or square hour marker appliques – a reminder of the brand’s historical models. Practical, highly legible and sturdy, the Pelagos model is further distinguished by its titanium bracelet with a folding steel clasp fitted with a unique spring-loaded self-adjusting mechanism’ developed and patented by TUDOR.





Thanks to this remarkable, technically accomplished system, the bracelet adjusts during diving, contracting in deep water when the diving suit is compressed and its volume is reduced, and, conversely, expanding as the pressure eases during the ascent. TUDOR’s Pelagos also comes on a rubber strap with an extension system enabling it to be worn easily over a diving suit. The new TUDOR Pelagos is a tribute to the sea, to those who are active in it and those who conserve it. The new Patek Philippe ref. 5204 perpetual calendar chronograph with split seconds function improves on the current iteration of the Patek Philippe 5004 with a fully in-house movement instead of the Lemania base that was previously used. The Lemania CH 27, an industry workhorse which has been used by numerous brands and is still used by Vacheron Constantin, was never meant to support a split seconds chronograph complication. In a previous interview, Patek’s Philippe Stern explained, “We had to create an isolator mechanism to enable the us to create a rattrapante, because with its slow vibrational speed, the CH27 would experience a drop in amplitude each time the split seconds function was activated.” As such, the current movement, the CHR 29-535 is a clearly superior beast, which comes through when the chronograph is activated. There are two new technical innovations which accompany the calibre CHR 29-535.

The split second hand lever is traditionally reset with a hammer that contacts the heart cam on the chronograph seconds wheel and brings the two rattrapante hands back into alignment. In practice, there is often a slight, undesirable, vibration of the split seconds hand when it is brought back to catch up with the chronograph seconds hand. The new rattrapante reset hammer implemented in the CHR 29-535 utilises a smaller ruby roller set between two shoulders that securely locks the position of the split seconds hand when the roller reaches the lowest point of the heart cam on the chronograph seconds wheel. As compared to the previous construction which incorporated a single, large ruby roller at the end of the rattrapante hammer, allowing some slight play of the hammer when it reaches the lowest point on the heart cam (caused jointly by the size of the roller and also the force of the return) the patented roller-and-shoulder construction offers more security and a more precise motion.

The second innovation has to do with the isolator mechanism in the movement that disengages the split seconds lever from the heart cam of the chronograph seconds wheel (hence allowing for the rattrapante function in the first place). Previously the isolator was activated by a multi-armed switcher that rotated unidirectionally to activate or deactivate the split seconds hand. The new CHR 29-535 incorporates a bi-directional switcher that is far more energy efficient as well as providing for a simpler and thinner construction that, ultimately, makes for a smoother (ie better) mechanism.

Thierry Stern reminds us that the brand’s in-house chronograph movement was created from the ground up to be able to sustain a split seconds function. Chief amongst the improvements is the 4Hz (28,800vph) vibrational speed which provides greater resistance to rattrapante drag.

Rolex continues its tradition of pragmatic, intuitive complications with the incredible new Sky Dweller, which features a second time zone display as well as a fantastic new annual calendar. Home time is read off the 24-hour disc located on the dial. Local time is read using the centrally mounted hands. The date is read off the familiar date aperture at 3 o’clock. But where things get really interesting is the way in which the month is subtly but legibly displayed. Between the ring of 12 hour indices and the periphery of the dial is an outer ring of 12 small rectangular apertures representing the months, in line with each hour index. These boxes all remain empty except the one aperture representing the current month, which is filled with a contrast color indicator. The aperture beside the index for 1 o’clock therefore indicates the month of January while the window beside the 11 o’clock index represents November and so forth.

While we’ve seen displays similar to this that use the hour indices to number off the month indications — such as in Moser Perpetual Calendar watch designed by Andreas Strehler — the placement of the month aperture directly beside the 12 hour indices creates an even higher level of legibility as opposed to the centrally mounted hand found in the Moser watch.

But the real genius of the Sky Dweller becomes apparent when you realize the amazingly intuitive way the various indications are adjusted. By unscrewing the crown and pulling it out, you release the Command Bezel first seen in the brand’s Yacht Master II. This is how you set the Sky Dweller:

1: Home time is set by turning the Command Bezel to Position 3. From the neutral position you rotate it counter clockwise three distinct clicks. Then when you turn the crown, you will see that the 24-hour disc and the central hands are synchronized. You advance the disc until the correct time in 24-hour format appears on the disc for your home time.

2: Local time is set by turning the Command Bezel to Position 2. From Position 3 you turn the bezel 1 click clockwise. Now you will see that the central hour hand has been decoupled and you can advance it forward or backwards without affecting home time. When the Command Bezel is at Position 2, the hour hand jumps in hour increments (exact positioning between the hour indices is determined by the position of the minute hand).

3: To set the date, turn the Command Bezel on more click clockwise to Position 1. Here you can quickset the date and month. The genius of the Sky Dweller is that the date and month can be set both backwards or forwards at any time. Turn the date backwards while the month of December is displayed and you will see at midnight on the 30th of November — the aperture for 11 will be activated and the aperture next to 12 will go blank.

In summary, the watch world was literally full of wild speculation regarding what calendar complication Rolex would unveil this year. Some felt we would see a return to the Tri-Compax watches of yore, but in fact what Rolex has done is even more meaningful. They’ve beautifully integrated one of the world’s most useful complications — the annual calendar, which automatically compensates for the shifting rhythms of the 30- and 31-day cycle of the months and needs to be adjusted only once every year at the end of February — in a way that is brilliantly subtle, highly legible and most of all completely intuitive and user friendly. The Sky Dweller is a testament to Rolex’s ongoing advancement as the world’s most innovative brand.

The Lange 1 Time Zone first seen in 2005 now comes with luminous indications for even greater legibility and functionality




The Grand Lange 1, as the name implies, comes in a substantial case size of 40.9mm, with an entirely new caliber developed to harmonize perfectly with the case dimensions. Even the date was subtly adjusted so as not to appear small in comparison with the rest of the dial.






Crowning the collection is the magnificent Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar, with jumping indications for all calendar displays. The jumping indicators are all accomplished within a minute of each other and the extra investment of energy this feature requires is testament to the skill of Lange watchmakers. A view of the back of the watch shows the exquisite gold rotor with platinum rim for high inertia. Note also the use of a Lange hairspring coupled with a free-sprung balance with adjustable eccentric weights.

The Ralph Lauren Slim Classique collection celebrates this distinctive aesthetic with timepieces that combine bold geometry with a sleek and thin silhouette, elegant guilloché engraving craftsmanship and masterful gem setting.

For 2012, Ralph Lauren presents two new interpretations of this timeless design, featuring luxurious embellishments that continue to honor the refined glamour and debonair sophistication of the Roaring '20s.

The first new Ralph Lauren 867 watch model places a single row of brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel of the watch, and accentuates their fire with a glossy black frame that emphasizes the rectilinear form of the watch and reflects the use of contrasting blacks and whites that characterizes much Art Deco design.

With the second Ralph Lauren 867 watch model, two rows of brilliant-cut diamonds lend their sparkle to the bezel of the watch. Diamonds have also been set into the lugs, and a single rosecut diamond adorns the crown.

Both models feature traditionally crafted silver opaline dials, with domed and strongly defined black Roman and Arabic numerals. Presented in 18k white gold, these models are worn with a black alligator strap and matching white gold pin buckle, and both are executed in the resolutely classic 27.5mm width, respecting the traditional dimensions of an iconic dress watch. As with the other Slim Classique collection models these watches are powered by an ultra-flat (2.1mm thin) hand-winding movement crafted by Piaget for Ralph Lauren. Whether adorning the wrist of a dapper gentleman, or that of a lady, these new diamond models evoke a definitive Art Deco spirit and formal elegance hallmark of the Ralph Lauren Slim Classique collection of watches.
