(19 replies) http://revo-online.com/forums/main/read.php?33,1009196,1009196#msg-1009196 With its interesting history, and especially after the amazing versions in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, the Pasha de Cartier has grown to a steady pillar within the Cartier collection. That was proofed once more when Cartier introduced the Pasha 42 in 2005. With this watch the Pasha returned to it’s roots in a very contemporary way. With a plain bezel, blued hands and lack of date, but with the square railroad track and 4 Arabic numerals its design is very similar as that of the original watch made for the Pasha of Marrakech. The distinct difference however, is the 42mm case. This made it the largest Pasha that Cartier ever made.

This larger case, combined with the clean looks, gave the watch tremendous personality and a real statement piece for around the wrist. Personality is also something that this watch has on the inside. Here ticks caliber MC 8000, a movement developed by Jaeger-LeCoultre especially for the Pasha 42. With 28,800 vibrations per hour, double barrel and winding mechanism in both directions it is a very contemporary movement, and the perfect companion for this new Pasha.

But Cartier didn’t stop there. With the introduction of the Pasha 42 Chronograph they took the design a step further. Because of the larger case there is plenty of room for the three subdials without creating a watch that is too busy to look at. The subdials are oval shaped and placed a little deeper then the rest of the dial. Also the inside of the subdials is placed lower then the subdials itself. This gives the dial a three dimensional effect, that is even strengthened by the fact that Cartier only applied guilloche within the railroad track, and not outside it. This makes the Pasha 42 Chronograph very attractive to look at. The movement that Cartier used for the Pasha 42 Chronograph is caliber MC 8100. This is a modified version of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s caliber 750. This automatic movement has the desired column wheel operation of the chronograph function as well as the tricompax layout of the subdials. Because the sub seconds are placed at 6 o’clock the watch has even in regard to it’s functions, a very balanced look. Perhaps the date function between 4 and 5 o’clock takes some of this balance away, but replaces this with practicality. It also suits the much sportier looks of this watch, compared to the time only Pasha 42.

The chronograph adds some complication to the Pasha's design

The Pasha de Cartier has always been a watch on the threshold of dress and sports watch. The Pasha of Marrakech clearly had a desire for a watch that embodied luxury while at the same time was suited to the harsh environment that the inlands of Morocco. A different take was introduced by Cartier when the Pasha Seatimer joined the collection. With a diving bezel, a slightly smaller case, and hands filled with luminova it embodies more the sporty side of the Pasha design, as Gerald Genta introduced in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

A chronograph followed soon after and although it shared quite some design traits with the Pasha 42 Chronograph it was a watch of it’s own. The shape of the canteen crown was altered and featured now, just as the side of the bezel, a row of Clous de Paris decoration. This combination of old style craftsmanship, with a modern take on the original design, made the Seatimer Chronograph a very fresh watch, yet very Cartier at the same time. It also shows the versatility of the Pasha design, going from dress watch to sports watch simply by what it’s owner wears.

That the Pasha 42 was destined to even greater things became clear in 2011, when a limited production model was introduced that featured a big date, second time zone and day and night indicator. The movement for this watch was based on caliber 8000 MC and this was also the first Pasha where Cartier gave customers the option to get it with that stunning dial in a deep, dark chocolate color. Cartier did an excellent job integrating the different complications within the Pasha-design and maintained that clean look that is clearly one of the strengths of the Pasha 42.

Also the days that the Pasha housed some of the most complicated movements Cartier ever put in one of their wrist watches relived. In 2011 Cartier introduced two stunning tourbillon movements in the Pasha. One features Cartier’s caliber 9457 MC, a skeletonized movement that is stripped to it’s bare bones so that the flying tourbillon seems to almost quite literally fly into the air. With caliber 9438 MC did Cartier also introduce a tourbillon chronograph with impressive 8 day power reserve in the Pasha case. Both watches where a testimony to the fact that Cartier is not only a power house when it comes to legendary watch designs, but that it is now also a serious force when it comes to the creation of innovating Manufacture movements.

What will the future hold for the Pasha? That is a question only the people at Cartier will be able to answer. Totally out of the blue and completely unexpected, at least for me, we received the news
that Cartier will release again, a new version of the legendary Crash watch in 2013.



Since a couple of years, the 'community' has asked frequently, why there is no Crash
and why not a larger Crash, since the model is very popular among men.
Cartier responded and will present in January, 4 different models for ladies in white- and in pink gold.
All models are set with diamonds and have
and that's, I think, for the first time for the Crash, a bracelet with drop shaped links!
Personally I am very exited to see a bracelet with this kind of links, back in the catalogue.
This is só much Cartier.
There is also a more precious version, where the bracelet is entirely gem set.
These 'drop' shaped links, are a variation on the 'tear drop' links, often used in the eighties
and they give the bracelet a vintage and very feminine look.



The Crash watch is one of those iconic objects from the seventies, like the 'LOVE' and the
'Juste un Clou bracelet.
To me and I am sure to many, this is absolute great news, that Cartier decided to re-release the Crash again
and I now start wondering, will a larger mens model also be in the pipe line........?
I am sure not for 2012, but who knows what 2014 will bring. There are no rumours yet.



Some different versions about the history of the model are being told, but now I read for the first time
Cartier's official story, of how the Crash watch, was created and I'll share here the un-edited line
Cartier used in their announcement;

- "According to the story, a client returned a Cartier watch that had been involved in an accident,
in order to have it repaired and Jean-Jacques Cartier, then the head of Cartier London,
was so taken with the shape of the case, that he wanted to reproduce it"-



This legendary and very feminine version of the watch, is produced in just 267 numbered pieces
for the models with gold bracelets and 67 numbered pieces, for the models with gem-set bracelets.
Like the Crash watches from the past, also these new limited editions, are objects of desire.
The last time 'La Maison' released a small edition of just 13 Crash watches,
was in 2005, for the re-opening of the Rue de la Paix store in Paris and before that another batch of
300 pieces in 1991.

These new watches have, like the vintage versions, a mechanical hand wound movement,
but lack the word Paris or London on the dial, that has been changed to 'Swiss Made'.



The new Crash watches will officially be presented at the SIHH in Geneva, January 2013.
Due to the very limited numbers produced, the watches will only be available at certain Cartier Boutiques.
Calling your sales representative in advance, is absolute advisable, since these beauties have no time
to wait on the shelves.

To prepare a dinner venue befitting the stature of Cartier, the Singapore Grand Hyatt ballroom was complete renovated and was converted into areas specially designed for Cartier's VIP clients. From heavy metal Cartier doors, a hushed passageway manned by rows of signature Cartier bellboys - leading into hallways decorated with posters of Cartier Fine Watchmaking timepieces, and finally to a chamber for cocktails displayed with the (almost) full range of timepieces from the Cartier Fine Watchmaking creations.

Post cocktail reception, the heavy Cartier metal doors opened to reveal an intimate dining hall and guests were invited to their seats for dinner.

Mr. Jeremy Lim, Chief Operating Officer of Cortina Watch welcomed his valued clients and gave an inspiring speech on the wonders of fine watchmaking. He welcomed his fellow partner for the evening, Mr. Christopher Kilaniotis, Regional Managing Director of Cartier South East Asia and Australia, who spoke on the great collaboration between Cartier and Cortina Watch, and gave an introductory insight into the Cartier Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds and the heritage and expertise of Cartier as a longstanding watchmaker.

Dinner commenced amidst the exclusive dinner setting where guests were serenaded by the smooth vocals of renowned local jazz singer, Ms Dawn Ho.

During the course of dinner, Ms Carole Forestier-Kasapi, Cartier’s Creative Director for Movement Creation and undoubtedly the most accomplished female watchmakers I know gave a personal welcome speech over video - although unable to attend the dinner due to work commitments, she thanked the guests for attending the event.

The dinner is highly significant in two ways. First is the demonstration of close relationships between Cartier and Cortina at a time when most established and successful brands like Cartiers are seen to be more focused on retail business through boutiques than wholesale through local retailers. Secondly is the full turn-out of serious clients and watch collectors, proving that Cartier has achieved its rightful recognition as a top player in the high end in-house manufactured technical complication segment.

Throughout the evening, guests were happy to peruse and played with the extensive Cartier haute horlogerie collection including the highlight of the evening - the exceptional Rotonde de Cartier Minute Repeater Fying Tourbillon.

a period when ties of love & friendship are being tightened with family and friends
and dinner parties and presents become more important than usually.

December 2012 is the first year that we highlight one of the Worldwide Cartier Boutiques
and the Amsterdam Store is the first, to be in the spotlight.



The Amsterdam Boutique opened it's doors in 1983 and is located
in the high end shopping street, the P.C. Hooftstraat, surrounded by Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren,
Paul Smith, Mulberry, Tiffany, Salvator Ferragamo, Chanel, Hermes, Tommy Hillfiger
and many other well-known International brands.

Being located in a cosmopolitan city, that all year long benefits from travellers making stopovers or
short city trips, it goes without saying that the Amsterdam staff speaks fluent English, Chinese,
German, Russian, French and Dutch.

The Boutique was recently renovated following the lines that were set by architect Bruno Moinard.
Round glass showcases and vitrines and a carpet that has details of the tracking of the
Tank watches and intimate corners for the staff to sit down with their clients.

Three corners of the boutique have an area where staff can sit down with their clients,
to have a drink and to present the collection.



and in the middle of the store is a larger area with bookshelves that gives a very classy and
homy atmosphere and when needed, it can be closed with a sliding door,
to give ultimate privacy to the clientele.









A special corner is reserved for accessories; bags, clocks, belts, cufflinks and sunglasses,
all these collections are getting more important every day.





But where it's all about, is of course the watch collection and the jewellery collection.
A large vitrine on the left and free standing cilynder cabinets are reserved for watches,
and round showcases for jewellery are located in the middle of the boutique.

Since the idea was to give you an impression of the Amsterdam Boutique, I won't go deep
into the collection itself, but I feel that I just have to show you the incredible
'Juste un Clou XL' bracelet, a piece that's not always available
and I noticed the very, very classic 'Trinity' or 'Trois Anneaux' bracelet.

The very new Tank Anglaise in steel and pink gold had just arrived.
Pictured here is the largest version with 1904 MC caliber.
But the watch comes in three sizes.



Amsterdam has a lot to offer and not only in Summer time.
Especially during the winter months, the city has a lot of charm with it's luminated canals,
the many grand cafés that serve great lunches, from a simple soup to a three meal course
and of course the famous Amsterdam museums.



So next time you're making a stop over or weekend trip to Amsterdam, make sure you'll make it
to the PC Hooftstraat; it's located right in the middle of the museum district.

that was done during Press presentations in New York, Paris and Tokyo,
is a very exiting one;

the 'Ballon Bleu de Cartier' tourbillon with double jumping second time zone watch,
quite a name for a time piece, but it also is quite a watch, that's limited to 50 pieces only.



The watch is not a straight forward tourbillon, like the Ballon Bleu tourbillon from 2009,
but it has been designed like a regulator. With its central minute hand and its two jumping hour counters –
one for your home time zone and one for the city you're visiting.
Like all other Cartier tourbillon watches, it's stamped with the Geneva Seal.



The dial of the Ballon Bleu is very clear, with the prominent one large center hand for the minutes
and the two round scales for the hours, indicating the time in the two cities.
The left counter with arabic numerals and the right counter with roman numerals.
The objective was to draw the eye to several predetermined points, such as the jumping-hours discs,
to instinctively lead to the two pieces of time information that are provided, and for which this watch
has been created.

But once the eye has read the numbers indicated by the individually adjustable blue hands,
it moves on to admire the powerful dimensions of this watch; 46 mm!
Because one would think that 46mm is ridiculous, I made this wristshot.
Personally I will never wear a larger watch than a Rotonde 42mm.
My wrist is 18 cm, so that's pretty average.
The Ballon bleu how ever wears a lot smaller, than other watch models like the pasha or Rotonde,
due to the very small and short lugs.
It wears só much smaller that it fits my average wrist very well, as the picture hopefully makes clear.

I have to be honest and admit that I was surprised myself.
The case has a perfect fit on the wrist, actually like all Ballon bleu models.

When looking at the watch in the hand before putting it on the wrist,



the face and transparent back of the Ballon Blue de Cartier tourbillon with double jumping second time
zone watch, reveal a piece of true kinetic sculpture.
The perfectly balanced movement that carries the Geneva Seal, is the product of a close association between
watchmakers and engineers.
The new in house, by Carole Forestier-Kasapi and her team, developed caliber 9456MC,
is a manual wind movement



regulated by a flying tourbillon that is inspired by the capital C of Cartier and has its carriage slightly
elevated to fit into the heart of the double jumping second time zone mechanism.

Through the meticulously skeletonised dial, this perfectly symmetrical, individually numbered heart reveals
a part of the subtle retrograde mechanism, which allows two fully synchronised but individually adjustable
jumping hours to be displayed.
The first, controlled by the winding crown, is fitted into the side of the watch case.
The tip of the blued-steel hand in the large counter with Roman numerals shows the time at the starting point.
The second, controlled by the push button set into the case at 10 o’clock, indicates the local time.



But every sophisticated mechanism involves something magical and in this case the magic happens in a
fraction of a second: every hour ends with a dry little click.
The two levers are each linked to a spiral spring, and when they reach the end of their course they are released.
Activated by their spring, these two parts snap back to their starting point in a fraction of a second.
During this movement, a retractable arming finger on the lever engages with one of their twelve linked teeth of
the star wheel.
In a flash, this advances each of the two wheels by one twelfth of a revolution which causes the two hands
to indicate the next hour in their respective counters – one for local time,
the other for where the journey began.

The caliber is of course automatic,so important for a Perpetual and the basis already existed in the Cartier collection
and is often simply called ”the Module” by the watchmakers.
It has now been adapted to the completely new Manufacture calibre 1904-CH MC.

The new automatic mechanical chronograph movement, that is hand finished, incorporates a number
of technical innovations intended to increase its precision and power.

Both models may look a like, but when having a closer look, it seems that there are
quite important differences, like the shorter and rounder lugs.
The Ronde de Cartier was always a chic watch and has been quite a while in the catalogue
in much smaller dimensions. The one I have myself, from 1989, is for instance only 33mm.

The collection is now enriched with a new and larger model in 42mm,
the LC Ronde de Cartier XL.

Smart match with a bit more formal clothing.
Due to the shorter lugs, the watch also wears a bit smaller than the 'Rotonde de Cartier'.
Like the other 'Ronde de Cartier' models, the movement is mechanical.

like the model with the sub seconds at 10 o'clock;



or the one with the sub seconds at 10 o'clock and diamonds.



Quite a dress watch and if it's not enough, there is even a variation with

In the shop window I noticed a very interesting looking watch. Info table said: Tank Anglaise. I went in and let the watch show. I was - and still is - very impressed with the watch. I like the largest model the most (it was so-so on my 6.5 in. wrist) but the smaller one was also very nice. The cases of both models were meticulously executed; I like the combination of brushed and polished surfaces. I am not a big fan of "jewelry" watches but this particular model I like very much. Unfortunately the charm assistant did not know very much about watches. She stubbournly insisted that the movement is not a mechanical but an automatic one, etc. Nonetheless I had a good feeling from the visit and I also remembered the magnificent Cartier exposition several years ago in this town.
Also I look at Tank Solo. Yes, it is a great watch. But the previous one ...., you know.
After coming home I opened this forum to find that Geo reviewed this watch some time ago. Yes, the watch looks great.
My question is if someone, wearing Tank Anglaise? Is it a watch for daily wearing or is it more like a jewelry? What is the experience - comfort, accuracy, could it be wearing on a leather strap, ....

For those who are not that familiar with the history of some models,
I call the story once more.

According to an unconfirmed story, a Vice President of Cartier London was involved in a car crash
and ensuing fire. ?His watch, a large curved ‘Maxi Oval’, melted from exposure to high temperatures.
The completely deformed and melted watch, was brought to the Cartier Mansions in New Bond Street
and inspired the designers of Cartier London, to create a model, that made fame as the "Crash Watch".

Wheather the story is true or not, fact is that these two watches are very sought after.
Note 'London' on the dial of the 'Baignoire Allongee' or 'Maxi Oval'.
Especially the 'Crash watch', designed in 1967, is very popular among men and women.
But both watches are the extra ordinary and typical Cartier creations, we do not see that often anymore.
The last two times that the 'Crash watch' was released, was in 1991, a limited edition of 400 pieces
and another very small run, of just 17 watches that was launched at the re-opening of
the Rue de la Paix store in Paris in 2005.
All were sold at the opening!

For some an accessories for a more formal styling, for others a daily need, no matter what outfit.

Cufflinks are an essential masculine jewellery and are part of a long Cartier tradition.

Some of the readers wondered and asked why all the new models were made in (palladium plated) silver
and not in pink- or yellow gold anymore.

Cartier is always unpredictable as we have learned and as mentioned in our previous post 'Nightlife',
I am please to post today, a couple of pictures of the new collection of cufflinks, that will be available in the Boutiques,
from December onwards.
It's an 18k Collection in yellow, pink and some models in white gold, with details in lacquer, enamel, onyx, diamond and ceramics.
Quite an important addition to the Cartier Collection of cufflinks, that now exists of roughly 35 pairs of silver cufflinks.

The Trinity cufflinks or three colour knots, as some people call them, are actually not that new.
The model is in the collection since many years, but the model is slightly altered.
The bar that connects the small knot with the larger one, used to be round and is more rectangular shaped now.
These are very easy to wear and easy to match cufflinks.

and the new LOVE cufflinks, that I only find só, só, compared to the LOVE cufflinks from the eighties.
That was a wrap around system, that we do not see often anymore.
There is how ever still an interesting silver wrap around model in the current collection, with sodalite cabochon.

we have seen so far, in the Cartier collection. This is where Cartier is all about. Luxury and exclusivity!

I have been playing with the Cartier USA website quite a bit and I am very, very happy with

Besides that, there is lot's of information and little movies to watch.

Let's recap and flash back to the SIHH last January when a new Tank, the Tank Anglaise,
was introduced in gold and gold with diamonds.
Cartier's large Tank family has evolved and been innovated.
The new Tank Anglaise also embodies the pioneering spirit of Tank by boldly hiding its crown,
in the vertical brancards and revealing only its inlaid precious stones.

The crown that sets the Anglaise model apart from most other Tank models,

Together, the three unite in paying homage to Cartier’s three historical boutiques

The looks of the steel/pink gold XL model and the medium version are typical Cartier,
the guilloche dial, the blued hands we know from the gold model, are all there.
The size however has increased a lot.
The Tank Americaine, I remember, was at the time of it's release a really large watch.
I have the 1989 model myself and my collegues were laughing a bit when they first saw it.
But the Tank Anglaise XL is even more impressive with it's 32.2 x 47mm dimensions.
The medium model could be a very could solution when the XL feels too large.
The medium is still not a small watch with it's case size of 29.8 x 39.2mm

Both models have an automatic movement.
The well known, by Cartier in house developed 1904MC caliber for the Tank Anglaise XL

And the ETA based 076MC caliber for the medium model.
Don't be too disapointed that there is no 'in house' movement for the medium version,
this 076MC caliber has proven over the years to be a very good work horse.
The Ballon bleu MM and the Santos 100MM both have that same caliber.

How does it fit and look on the wrist? Since just pictures of the watch don't tell the whole story,
I made a few wrist shots, to give an idea what the watch does on the wrist.

and elegant watch. Very feminine and powered with a quartz movement.
I was charmed by this little beauty!

a very new look at that time.
The steel / pink gold case of these Tank Anglaises has the same effect on me
and is in fact an even stronger and more modern combination.

the Cartier Santos Dumont Skelette from the Fine Watch Making Collection.
The estimate ofSw.Fr. 8000 - 12000.- was incredible low but the watch did very well and sold almost
3x the estimate and is changing owner for almost Sw.Fr. 40.000.- incl. buyers premium,
very close to retail.



Congrats to the winner and congrats to Cartier for making such a desirable piece.

Right now it is my every day watch.

The campaigns of the Tank Anglaise and of the 'Just un Clou' bracelet,
in Worldwide media, did not remain unnoticed, by anybody.
Cartier always works with top photographers around the world, to get the best images of their watches and
jewelry.
When we talk about of commercial photography, everything needs to be right, wrong reflections
are touched up and important details are extra highlighted, to make sure that no detail is missed
by the reader of the magazine.
The result are great product shots, which are sometimes also a bit too clean.

Editorial photography is a different type of photography.
Here the photographer has much more- and often all the freedom, to create a highly creative image.
Atmosphere and the total image is more important than the exact reproduction of product details.
It should be seen as a specialisation in photography.

'Magazine Cartier Art' is a superb non commercial magazine, about art and architecture
and contains articles about upcoming- as well as established artists.
It's this magazine where I saw for the first time the work of photographer Peter Lippmann;
it were the photographs, made to illustrate the article 'Birth of an Icon' in 2004,
that immediately caught my eye.

I am very happy (and proud) that photographer Peter Lippmann and Cartier gave us the rights to publish
some of his work here at Revolution, since as far as I know, these amazing images have not been
published in any other magazine, but just in 'Magazine Cartier Art'. (Subscriptions are available)

is a very clever and creative idea that matches the industrial looks of the watch só well.

'Extraseduction' was the amazing photoshoot for the La Dona watch and the Crocodile bracelet
created for Maria Félix.
Especially the pictures of young crocodiles together with the gold crocodiles, created by Cartier,
gave a surrealistic and unbelievable effect.

Here pens were used in vintage surroundings and in combination with models,
like Lippmann did with the photography of 'Juste un Clou' in the last issue of the magazine.

Lippmann's last photo session for 'Magazin Cartier Art' was for the 'Juste un Clou' bracelet,
that was launched this year.
Instead of flashing back to the eighties and the times of Studio 54, the period when Aldo Cipullo created
the bracelet, Lippmann did his 'own thing' and created these clean and very sexy black & white images,
of models wearing the jewelry.

The last photograph of the bracelet, in the hair, is very Lippmann.

It's clear that Peter Lippmann's perfectionism is excellent for the products of Cartier,

Studio Lippmann is based in Paris and besides Cartier,
Marie Claire, Christian Louboutin and B&O, are among his clients.

Also, the hands seemed to be oxidized gold, has Cartier ever used these hands on the Tank normale?

The changing of season has inspired me to post about my very first Cartier watch. I was in my early 20s when the Cartier bug first bit me. I was still at university then and one of my professors had a two-tone Santos de Cartier watch that he wore everyday. Not only did I look up to him as an educator as well as a mentor, I also admired the watch he was wearing. I like the way the Santos looked with it's gold screws on the bracelet and the overall elegance as well as sophistication it exudes. His watch inspired me to get a Cartier watch of my own one day.

Fast forward a few years later, I got my first real job, saved up enough money and bought my very first Cartier watch. I decided to get a Cartier Panthere as it resembled a Santos only more affordable. Plus, I loved the figaro bracelet that it had which I think is still one of the best designed bracelets of the maison

My Cartier collection and passion for the brand had grown since then. Thankfully, I still have the watch and will cherish and wear it for many many more years.

Forty two, set in two rows of 21, on both brancards of the case, which gives the case an even more Art Deco look
than it already had and one in the crown of course, as Cartier always does with their diamond set watches.





A diamond is the one stone in the world that expresses luxury, success and independency.
Wearing diamonds as a man, requires confidence, it's exposing yourself a bit,
it's something one has to dare and is may be not for everybody.
But when worn with the right outfit, you're absolute the man of the eve.



It is hard to give guidelines, for when to wearing a diamond set watch, since we are an International community
and since diamonds have a different feel in the various parts of the world.
While men in the Middle East region wear their diamond watches during the day,
it's in Europe more common to wear a watch like this, after 5 PM, when going out for dinner, meeting friends
and on special occasions and parties.
Asia, in that respect, is less strict with their timings, while in the US it varies a lot, if one lives in California or Texas,
not speaking about New York.
You do have to find your own style in wearing an eye catching watch like this.

The Tank lends itself very well for adding diamonds to the case and in the collection,
there are other prime examples like the Tank Americaine and Tank Francaise with diamonds,
while the new Tank Anglaise also looks superb with it's diamond setting.
My preference is this LC Tank XL, since it's so refined, so elegant and still só incredible masculine looking
that I can only see this watch on a mens wrist.

Interesting enough I find the much larger Tank Anglaise Diamonds much more a watch for ladies to wear.
In my opinion it's not the size that makes a model more suitable for men, or more for ladies,
it's the overall styling of the piece that tailors it more to a man or a woman.

Fact is that diamonds for men are not a trend and are here to stay.
And to compliment any watch with- or without diamonds, or as a first step in to the world of diamonds,
this perfect pair of white gold cufflinks set with diamonds, will look great with for instance a white shirt.

These new cufflinks however, will not be in the Boutiques earlier than December!


I highlighted here the white gold LC Tank XL with diamonds, but this is just because white gold would be my choice,
when it comes to a diamond set watch. I just love the combination of white gold with diamonds.
But I can very well imagine that there are enough people who prefer the warmer colour of pink gold
and pink gold and diamonds, do give a completely different feel and look.
It's a personal decision and it depends also on the tone of your skin, which metal looks better.




- The back of the LC Tank XL is closed and gives a solid look -

Cartier has quite a large range of mens watches with diamonds, from the butch Calibre and stylish Rotonde
to this very stylish LC Tank XL.
And Cartier is certainly not the only brand, presenting watches set with diamonds for men.

Especially during the end of the year, these watches are a great expression of the Holiday spirit,
as long as the lucky owner, realises that a diamond set Cartier watch, is always appropriate,
when he thinks it is.

At the gem and mineral collection of the museum, you will find a spectacular collection of rare and valuable jewellery bequeathed to the museum by various collectors for the people of America. There were pieces from the houses of Van Cleef & Arpels, Harry Winston, Bvlgari and Cartier. It was surprising to see that most of the pieces were from Cartier!

The highlight of the collection is the legendary Hope Diamond that was once reset by Pierre Cartier in 1910

I've taken photos of some of the jewellery on display. Although I tried to photograph the Cartier pieces exclusively, some of the photos are not.

From October 24th. 2012 - February 17th. 2013, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid
will host El Arte de Cartier, unveiling more than 420 pieces from the Cartier Collection,
from its beginnings to the present day.




This exhibition, one of the most significant to date due to the number of previously un-exhibited pieces,
reflects Cartier’s spirit and artistic evolution since its creation in 1847. The dynamism of the Cartier brothers
and their interest in the art of ancient and distant cultures laid the foundations for Cartier’s artistic identity.

Jewellery, watches and precious accessories: through its infinite detail and sophistication
the Cartier Collection reveals a culture and an art of living. Throughout Cartier’s history, the values which lie
at the heart of its creative principle have asserted themselves: the pursuit of exceptional craftsmanship,
daring, curiosity, openness and... generosity.

From the garland style through to the Art Deco of the 1930s, from Chinese inspiration to the Tutti Frutti style,
this unique retrospective showcases more than 165 years of creativity through the many facets of
Cartier's style, a style which earned the title "king of jewellers, (the) jeweller of kings" from King Edward VII.

Very early on, Cartier established a friendship with Spain and its royal family: in 1904,
King Alfonso XIII granted Cartier the royal warrant of official supplier to the royal court.
In 1929, during the Barcelona International Exposition in Montjuïc Park, Cartier caused a stir with the
Aga Khan’s diamond-set necklace: 38 round stones and three diamond drops of 40, 38 and 35 carats.

Alongside the famous items that once belonged to legendary clients, visitors will discover the
garland-style tiara given to Queen Victoria Eugenia by King Alfonso XIII in 1920 as a wedding gift;
an exceptional loan – made possible by the royal family – of this jewellery piece worn by Queen Sofia
during official events.

A new fact: a certain number of newly acquired pieces in the Cartier Collection are to be unveiled for the
first time, in particular, Elizabeth Taylor’s ruby and diamond necklace, given to the actress by her husband
Mike Todd, as well as the Duchess of Windsor’s flamingo brooch, created in collaboration with
Jeanne Toussaint, from stones provided by the Duke.

A colourful creation, illuminated by a multicoloured plumage of calibrated sapphires, rubies and emeralds;
this is a bold chromatic interpretation of a flamingo, in the tradition of a vision that is both realistic and poetic.

In addition, the Palace of Monaco has authorised the display of certain Cartier creations for the occasion,
such as the diamond and ruby parure that Princess Grace wore in the official photographs of her marriage
in 1956, both gifts from Prince Rainier III.

Also on display is an exceptional Special order that belonged to Maria Félix; the Crocodiles necklace!

weighing 60.02 carat in total.
Two navette-shaped emerald cabochons (eyes). 1 060 emeralds, weighing 66.86 carat in total. Two ruby cabochons (eyes).
Entirely articulated, the two crocodiles can be worn separately as brooches or together as a necklace. When worn around the neck,
the feet can be replaced by clawless paws that will not irritate the skin. Sold to María Félix.

- Cartier Paris, special order, 1968, Platinum, white gold and yellow gold, 2 473 brilliant- and baguette-cut diamonds,
weighing 178.21 carats in total.
Two pear-shaped emeralds (eyes), green, red and black enamel. Made as a special order for María Félix.
Mexican diva and archetypal Latin femme fatale, María Félix (1914-2002) carried on her acting career until the late 1960s. The actress,
well known in Mexico and France for films such as Emilio Fernandez’s Enamorada (1946), Jean Renoir’s French Cancan (1955),
and Luis Buñuel’s Fever Rises in El Pao (1959), was a true reptile lover.

The Egyptian Striking Clock is a very important piece from the Cartier Collection.
I have seen the piece earlier at the 'Power of Style' exhibition in Prague and at the 'Time Art' exposition
in Zürich and I can only say that it's a 'must see' clock, since it's só powerful and impressive in the flesh.

Rectangular 8-day movement, striking mechanism (hour and quarter-hours), gold-plated, beaded decoration, 3 adjustments, 15 jewels,
platform escapement, bimetallic balance, Breguet balance spring. Sold to Mrs. Blumenthal. George Blumenthal (1858-1941)
headed Lazard, a Wall Street investment bank and was a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1905 onward.
This clock was sold to his first wife, Florence (1873-1930).
As collectors and patrons of many French artists, the couple owned several major pieces by Cartier.
In 1935, one year after he was appointed president of the Metropolitan Museum, Blumenthal married Mary Ann Payne.

The presence of the Cartier Collection in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum may seem bold,
yet the exhibition’s scenography by Jorge Varela based on a visual journey integrates seamlessly
with the Museum’s mission. Alongside some of the world's most famous paintings,
the Cartier Collection expresses a blend of resonances and dialogue,
from the heart of long-standing connections.



- The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum Madrid, can easy be reached, by train or by plane.
For instance from Geneva, it's just a two hour flight and when leaving on a Friday with an early 'EasyJet' flight,
you could be back in Geneva the same day at 8PM. Just an idea for those visiting the SIHH!
There are different options, including train, metro, bus, taxi, or car rental, to get to the centre of Madrid.
They all take more or less 20 - 25 minutes, to make the just 13 kilometer journey, from the airport to the city
and the exposition is until February 17th. 2013
When you're planning to go up and down to Madrid, just for one day, to visit the museum, it's advisable to book your
ticket in advance online, since the Museum is not that large and pretty fast sold out.

Since he was visiting Europe, we had a chance to meet again in Paris.
I always arrive early, when going to Paris and took the tube to Place Vendome first.



There is always much to see at this gorgeous square, although there are many renovations,
since last year.
A couple of flagship stores are renovating like Dior and Hublot, but the Louis Vuitton Boutique
finally opened this Summer


- Cartier's watch roll from the nineties -

Travelling with watches is always a bit of a challange, but these watch rols that are made
by many different brands, are quite convenient.
This one, from the Santos series, was unfortunately available very shortly and is the best
watch roll that was ever available on the market, since it has two short rolls inside,
while all the other brands, I know, have just one long roll.


- Two short rolls, in the case that can store four watches -

So when one needs the watch in the middle, the whole roll needs to be removed and
the watch left or right, needs first to be taken off first.


- Never a lunch without a dessert in France -

When we were finished with the dessert, the table was finally empty for the watches.



- Santos Dumont Jubillée from 1997, Tank Asymetrique re-editionfrom 2006 and the Tank Basculante
made for the the CPCP series -


- The largest one on the table, the XL Tortue -

While on the wrist was an XL Tortue in pink gold.

I had brought the 'by Movado, for Cartier produced', Ermeto pocket watch with me.
The watch was completely serviced and restored this Summer.

The watch is from 1932 and runs perfectly again, after it was restored and serviced.



The Tank Basculante is a very special Cartier Tank, that originally dates back to 1932,
these early models were called Tank Réversible, or Cabriolet Reversible.
I had never seen this yellow gold model in the flash and was impressed by the feel and the weight
of the watch, very different from the steel version.
It's currently not in the collection, but icons like this will come and go and I am sure we will see
it again in the future.
The watch is often compared the Reverso by Jeager Le Coultre, that was originally
launched in 1931, but the construction of the case, is completely different and the case
of the Tank Basculante is also a lot thinner.
Franco Cologni wrote in his book The Tank Watch, that between 1991 and 1994 only 413 pieces were produced.

- The display window in this model, makes it all -

Most Tank Basculante models, especially the steel models have a closed back, that can be used
for an inscription, family wapon or monogram.
The Collection Privée model had a nice round display window the view the Frederique Piguet
manual movement and there has been a steel limited edition model, with that round display window.


- Cufflinks, vintage and today's collection -

Cufflinks not the main subject here, but still always an interesting subject among collectors.
On the table a few vintage pieces like the Etrier (or Stirrup), Panthere and the Pasha links,
but also some new pieces from the current collection like the the Onyx sculpted links,
Santos links with blue cabuchon and the Cheetah head links, from the 2011/2012 collection.
The Onyx sculpted links are very smart IMHO and are actually a re-edition of the vintage model
that was made in yellow gold.

Several months ago, I saw Geo's wonderful post on the Santos 100 Carbon....WOW! That's one Cartier that I really wanted. The issue is that it has been discontinued, and what is left in the boutiques and AD are the midsize and the rose gold version. Hey, I want to have the large size in titanium and carbon, the one that Geo has...:)
Apparently, there is no XL size for this basic model (there is XL for Chrono though, but I prefer the simplicity of the basic model).

Few weeks ago I cames across a local collector that was selling the Santos Carbon that I have been looking for. As I was looking at the post late at night, I left the posting with the Santos carbon pic on my computer when I went to sleep. Interestingly the next morning I received the following SMS from my wife: "Saw Santos in your com. Very nice. U getting it?".

Since my wife asked me to get it, what can I do but to willingly obliged...:)
Met the seller and tried it on my wrist....it looks great! Though slightly small due to the carbon casing, but I love it. So finally a Cariter for me....
