I appreciate the work but I'm not sure if I would wear them

A smaller enamel cloissoné like for example a PAtek 5131 is ok for me, but a painting ... not sure about that

but its not really something I would buy. I perfer more traditional looking dials. I think if I were to get something with enamel work, I would maybe opt for a JLC Reverso with enamel work on the back of the case. That way I would have a traditional dial on one side and enamel work to enjoy on the other side. I think for me, the issue is I'm not really sure what I would appreciate having in enamel on my watch that I would not tire of after several months/years.

Hi Bruno,

Very interesting question! To me any watch at the highest tier of watchmaking can be considered art. When you actually incorporate a painting on the dial, things tend to get very personal! I have seen some stunning examples by Bovet, JLC and Delaneau that I would actually wear (with the exception of the DeLaneau because that is a ladies watch). I also like the Patek Worldtimer, where the painted center add's some old world charm (like this watch needs it!). From the past Universal Geneva had some great painted dials. To me, it is a type of watch that you add to your collection either when it is totally your thing, or when you already have everything else.

Hi Bruno, difficult question at least for me.
Cartier has a whole series of Art & Crafts models and I was lucky to have seen
how these watches are being made.
It really is ART in capitals.
We did an article on these watches that you can find HERE

Despite their hefty price tag, these limited edition watches do sell very well.
Of course they are produced in very limited runs from 20 to maximum 100 pieces,
depending on the number, which also makes them more desirable, but still.
Personally, since you asked, I am not fond of the combination Art and watches,
it does not do me much, I love the way it looks, but it does not facinate me enough,
same for the watches by Ulysse Nardin with the erotic engravings on the back,
or illustrations on the dial, they were funny, but for how long.
The Artistic Crafts Series is on a much higher level, from a creative point of view,
but I rather see it on a desk clock than on a watch.

Although I have seen very few in real life, mostly in photos. To me, a watch is the ultimate form of jewellery and, as such, I consider artwork on the dial appropriate. If I was in the positon to afford some of those I have seen, I would most certainly have one.
I have heard it said that with no markers it would be difficult to tell the time. We all learn to tell time at a very early age, and most of us can easily tell the time at a glance simply by the position of the hands.
The one you show in the photo is one of the nicest I have seen. I love the overall simplicity of the watch, the stunning blued hands, and the gorgeous painting. I, for one, would be very proud to wear such a piece.
Cheers,

really beautiful, but they do not interest me at all and I do not see myself wearing one.
As ladies watches, they are stunning time pieces, very often a ladies watch has not much to do with, how a watch looks like, anyhow.
I have seen art work like this also from van Cleef and I have a feeling that Cartier and van Cleef are the best in doing this kind of art.
For me this artwork could belong in a ladies watch, but not really in a mens watch.
