You guys are right - there is nothing like a Tank!! Well, I am delighted to be back in the World of Cartier. Even after I sold my Calibre - which I have not regretted, as it got me my beautiful Omega Speedmaster - I have been craving a smaller, dressier watch. And yes, Geo, you are absolutely right: there must be a square or rectangular watch in the collection. The time is not now for me to get a gold watch, though. For months, I have been deliberating about the Tank Solo in stainless steel. I have read and re-read comments on here and on other forums about all aspects of the watch, from the quartz movement to the steel bracelet. And I have tried it on any number of times. Maybe it was because of the extra full Moon yesterday, I don't know. I just woke up and decided that I had to get a Tank Solo this weekend, and that is exactly what I did. I came very close to getting the steel bracelet, but when I tried on the black alligator model, I just had to admit it looked the best. I did take a very close look at the bracelet, and I do like it very much. I really still feel that the Cartier quality is really there, and it must have been quite a task to specially design such a bracelet not only for a Tank, but for such a thin watch. And I have to say - although there are many who will disagree - that Cartier did a fine job. However, all of my other watches have a steel bracelet, and not only is it time for a change, but I honestly think the watch looks better on the strap. Another debate was the smaller alligator scales on the Tank Solo models. Until I read some of the comments, I did not honestly know it was a difference in quality. I actually preferred the look of the smaller scales - although it would not be a deciding factor in choosing a watch - and I really do like the overall quality of this strap. I did not realize how robust alligator leather is until I started fussing with the deployment strap on this watch. You really have to twist and squeeze the leather a lot when you are fitting it into the deployment. I must admit the Cartier deployment is not very impressive to me, although after a bit of a struggle, I have managed to get the strap into a very comfortable position. Once I accepted the fact that the buckle was not going to center itself properly, it became a lot easier. Now I am quite happy with the results. Very comfortable. I must admit, though, I am not really too happy about bending, twisting and squeezing the leather. However, once in position, I don't think it will be a big deal. I am loving the black strap, though. The black really brings out the Roman Numerals brilliantly. And I love the blued hands. The opaline dial, in real life, is much more beautiful than most of the photos make it out to be, with a beautiful satin antiqued effect. To me, this is not an "entry level" watch. It is unmistakably a most gorgeous Cartier. I have gotten over the fact that it has a quartz movement, and for the amount of use the watch will get, I think quartz is a perfect choice. It also helps to know how well Cartier finishes the movement, regardless of the fact it is not visible. It is my very first Tank watch, and even if it might be my last, I could not be more proud of it. There is that unmistakable "Tank" feeling you get when wearing it. Regardless of how many are out there, you just know and feel that it is a very special and unique watch. Regardless of the size, metal, or movement. I am absolutely delighted with this watch. I think that Cartier has done an outstanding job with designing a stainless steel and combination gold/stainless steel Tank model at a price that is affordable to many who may not otherwise be able to own a Cartier Tank. And in using a quartz movement, they have been able to keep the watch at a nice thin size. Anyway, I seem to be unable to get a watch without also getting a ring specially for it. Over a year ago, at Tiffany's, I noticed a line of jewellery they have, available in Sterling Silver, callled Atlas. After I picked up my watch, I paid them a visit, and fortunately they had my exact size, so I got that as well. I think the Roman Numerals on the ring are a beautiful touch with the watch, and the satin background for the Romans is almost identical to that of the Tank dial. I took a few pics of my own. This coming weekend, I am hoping that a friend of mine will take some really good wrist shots for me. There don't seem to be many wrist shots of the Tank Solo, so I am hoping to get a good collection. I'm like a kid with a new toy! The first thing I do when I get home, is take out the Tank and put it on my wrist.

Although I already think about other straps I could get for it, I am just going to wait a bit. I just have a feeling that I am going to want to go back to this original black alligator with the small, circular scales. To me, it just suits the watch so well.

I remember back when I first started seriously thinking about the Tank watches, in particular the Tank LC and Tank Solo. I had always liked the strap on the Tank Solo, and wondered if it could be put on other models as well. Little knowing, at the time, that the strap on the Solo was in keeping with the cost saving measures of this model.

My thoughts are that I will most likely end up with the yellow gold Tank Solo. The stainless steel bracelet for this model does not appeal to a lot of people, I know, but having looked at it very closely, I have to say it does impress me. Gives the watch a totally different look.
After I wear the Omega Speedy all week, it is a real joy to put on that little Tank. It is not only fun to wear, it makes me feel a bit like a rebel. Really enjoying a smaller size watch when the trend is toward larger, bulkier models. When the sun shines on that Tank dial, with the thick lacquered Roman Numerals, the blued hands and that beautiful opaline textured dial, you know there is nothing more beautiful or distinctive.
Before I do anything, though, I am waiting to see the new Tank LC, as indeed we all are!

Well, what can I say --there's simply no other watch like the Tank. It's amazing how exclusive a watch it was for most of its history --up until the 1960s Cartier often made less than 100 a year, and you can't go wrong with a watch that was worn by Rudolf Valentino ;) . It's funny; the Tank has been imitated so often that for many people it's what they think of when they think of a watch, without even realizing that it's a very specific watch with a very specific history. I think no serious collector should be without one.

Sitting in the sun yesterday, I looked down at the dial. And, yes, those lacquered Roman Numerals just seem to pop off the dial.
My Calibre was a great watch as well, but there were just a couple of things that bugged me too much. I cannot say the same for the Tank. To me, Cartier just got everything right.
The only thing left to add a bit of fun, would be to maybe get a couple of different straps. All in good time, though.
Unless I actually look at it on my wrist, I forget it's there. It is so light. With that deployment, the watch just stays in place on the wrist all the time.

My favourite ring alongside my Tank:







It is great to have a watch that I can enjoy while wearing dressy clothes or casual clothes. As time goes by, I think that I might be tempted go get the same model, but with the steel bracelet. I came very close to getting the one with the bracelet, then decided that it would be nice to have a watch with a leather strap. And I am glad that I made that choice.

I would wear the watch to work, but I would be afraid of damaging the leather strap actually, and not the watch itself. Perhaps on the steel bracelet, though.

I am really liking the deployment on this watch, although at first I had mixed feelings. It is very comfortable. As well, I like the simplicity and flatness of the buckle, which is quite unlike the sculpted ardillon or tang-type buckle. It reflects the flatness of the Sole case very well. The strap seems very well made. I also prefer the smaller scales of the skin to the larger ones, I feel it suits this watch better, probably because of the size as well. I see from the inside of the strap it is made in France. The leather is very soft and I feel like it is worn in already.



This watch is even giving me more pleasure than I imagined. It really is a lot of fun to wear. Always feels as though you have something very unique on the wrist - which indeed you do - without feeling like a showoff. It really is a class act. After having tried on the JLC Reverso and a few others square and rectangular watches, including the Limited Edition Omega JFK Commemorative watch ( a remake of the one JFK receieved in the early 60's as a gift ), and even the Patek Philippe Gondolo which would be impossible for me anyway, there is none that has the same enjoyment to me. I just never feel as though this is a remake, copy or tribute timepiece. It is just a wonderful version of a famous, historical watch that has evolved over time.

Personally, I find that trends have the opposite of their intended effect on me. As the trend appears towards bigger watches, as we see in the Tank Anglaise and the new Tank LC, I am liking even more the smaller sizes. I even tried on the small size Tank Solo, with both steel bracelet and strap. If the large size was not available, I would not have any problem with the small size. Maybe, if I get the Tank Solo in the yellow gold, I shall consider the small size at that time.

Thanks for posting the photo of your ring. Scandinavian countries have a very specific design style in almost everything and especially in jewelry. Nice diamond you have in the ring! Usually diamonds are hard to photograph in such a way that they show their full power, but you did great! It is also a very nice size!

Even the upcoming Tank LC ultra thin model is going to be quite a bit bigger. I think that because it is flat, the ends will extend too far out from the curvature of the wrist. The Tank Solo, although flat as well, just sits well on my wrist. At 7.25in. I don't have a small wrist, but the Tank suits very well. Funny thing, now that Cartier is coming out with these larger Tank models, I am not even hesitating to get this Tank Solo, without waiting for the new models.

Second ring I have purchased from Tiffany. I like the thought of a Cartier Love ring, or maybe the classic Trinity 3-gold at some point. I have to say, though, that I like how so many of the Tiffany rings are available in Sterling Silver. If it weren't for silver rings, I would simply not be able to afford the collection I have. Having said that, at some point I will likely be getting the Cartier Trinity 3-gold. I thought it might be too small, but when I tried it on at the Boutique it really sang to me. So it is with the Tank, it doesn't have to be big to be alluring. And it will be great when the time comes, to have a precious metal yellow gold watch and ring.

As we are on the subject of rings, I had a great stroke of luck the other day. Looking through some old photos, I came across a gold ring in the same box as the photos, which I had purchased in Finland in the very early 70s. I thought that I had lost it! I was so enthused, as it looks like it has hardly been worn at all. I took a few photos of it, and was wondering when and where would be the appropriate place to post them. Hope you don't mind my showing them right here:





I even remember having them engrave my initials on the face of the ring. And, I think the single diamond is also a wonderful touch. Even to this day, I have never seen a ring like this. At the time I got it, I really did not have much money, but I remember thinking that it was something I simply had to have.




I can't remember, of course, exactly what I paid. Even at the time, when our dollar was so valuable, I knew it was a bargain. Less than 100 Finnmarks, to be sure. At the time, that would have been about $25.00. Just mentioning it out of interest. Something like this - I even remember the store and people I purchased it from, good friends of my buddy - you can't put a price on.

The stainless steel bracelet really does appeal to me a lot as well. To me, it does not make affect the look of the watch in a bad way. Rather, it gives it a totally different look. I have looked at all aspects of the Tank thoroughly, both on strap and bracelet. I cannot see a thing about the quality anywhere that, to me, has been compromised. A lot of people think the bracelet looks cheap, but the fact that it has to be very thin and light by necessity may make it seem that way to many. In the end, it's whatever makes one happy.

I actually went to the Cartier AD, where I got my Calibre, with the intention of getting the one with the steel bracelet. In the end, it's very good to have the leather strap, for a complete change.

Never have I had a more elegant watch. However, it looks good with everything. On Saturday, I am taking a very good friend out for dinner for his birthday/retirement, at one of Vancouver's finest restaurants. I love the restaurant, but I am almost looking forward to wearing my Tank as much as I am the dinner. To me, the Tank will be very much a part of the occasion.

Well, a Tank is a Tank. Regardless of the price, the metal, the strap, the movement, or the price. With this watch I do not feel compromised in any way. I only feel very fortunate to be able to have a Tank at all.

You mentioned in your previous post a few times, that a Tank watch was always on your mind,
so really good that you pulled the trigger and got one.
But be aware, Tanks can become easily an addiction, due to their iconic strong shapes and variety
in sizes. A great plus of the Tank Solo is the very nice steel bracelet that's available for the watch,
but I do agree with ya, on leather the watch looks very classy
Your new Tank Solo is a perfect companion with your Omega, since they're such a different timepieces
and I am sure you will enjoy it to the max.

Absolutely great to see that you picked up a Tank Solo! I must admit that I have drooled over this one many times when I past a Cartier-dealer. Excellent choice and such a nice addition in your collection! In regard to the quartz-movement; since this is not only a Manufacture movement but also one of exceptional high quality it is absolutely nothing to be ashamed off! It is actually a perfect choice for an everyday watch like this one. Not to temper your enthusiasm in any way, or my own for that matter, but I think the only, only small detail that would improve the Tank Solo is a guilloche dial.

I also really like your ring! I had no idea Tiffany was making rings like this! Always liked their Atlas-collection and definitely need to check out their ring section next time I visit them! Congrats on your new Tank. I'm sure you will enjoy it. For me the Tank is the most perfect non-round watch design. Its there simple yet elegant. I also find that since most of my daily wear watches are round sport watches, its a nice change when I put on a Tank. I suppose its like wearing sneakers all day and then putting on a fine pair of shoes to wear for an evening out. I find a Tank a refreshing change from my usual round watches. In addition, congrats on the ring. It compliments the Solo very nicely! The Roman numerals are a nice strong theme in the Atlas collection. I hope that you get many years of use and enjoyment from your new watch and ring.

It looks great as well, but I still like the looks of the traditional Cartier Tank better. I think the Tank Solo will also be the one, when it comes time for a gold watch.
I have been looking at the JLC Reverso models quite a bit as well. Originally, I started to look because they had the manual wind. Now I have the Omega Speedy, I finally have my manual wind watch for every day. Having that watch has really helped to change how I feel about the quartz movements.

Maybe it was because of the extra full Moon yesterday, I don't know. I just woke up and decided that I had to get a Tank Solo this weekend, and that is exactly what I did. I came very close to getting the steel bracelet, but when I tried on the black alligator model, I just had to admit it looked the best. I did take a very close look at the bracelet, and I do like it very much. I really still feel that the Cartier quality is really there, and it must have been quite a task to specially design such a bracelet not only for a Tank, but for such a thin watch. And I have to say - although there are many who will disagree - that Cartier did a fine job. However, all of my other watches have a steel bracelet, and not only is it time for a change, but I honestly think the watch looks better on the strap.

Another debate was the smaller alligator scales on the Tank Solo models. Until I read some of the comments, I did not honestly know it was a difference in quality. I actually preferred the look of the smaller scales - although it would not be a deciding factor in choosing a watch - and I really do like the overall quality of this strap. I did not realize how robust alligator leather is until I started fussing with the deployment strap on this watch. You really have to twist and squeeze the leather a lot when you are fitting it into the deployment.

I must admit the Cartier deployment is not very impressive to me, although after a bit of a struggle, I have managed to get the strap into a very comfortable position. Once I accepted the fact that the buckle was not going to center itself properly, it became a lot easier. Now I am quite happy with the results. Very comfortable. I must admit, though, I am not really too happy about bending, twisting and squeezing the leather. However, once in position, I don't think it will be a big deal.
I am loving the black strap, though. The black really brings out the Roman Numerals brilliantly. And I love the blued hands. The opaline dial, in real life, is much more beautiful than most of the photos make it out to be, with a beautiful satin antiqued effect.

To me, this is not an "entry level" watch. It is unmistakably a most gorgeous Cartier. I have gotten over the fact that it has a quartz movement, and for the amount of use the watch will get, I think quartz is a perfect choice. It also helps to know how well Cartier finishes the movement, regardless of the fact it is not visible. It is my very first Tank watch, and even if it might be my last, I could not be more proud of it. There is that unmistakable "Tank" feeling you get when wearing it. Regardless of how many are out there, you just know and feel that it is a very special and unique watch. Regardless of the size, metal, or movement. I am absolutely delighted with this watch. I think that Cartier has done an outstanding job with designing a stainless steel and combination gold/stainless steel Tank model at a price that is affordable to many who may not otherwise be able to own a Cartier Tank. And in using a quartz movement, they have been able to keep the watch at a nice thin size.
Anyway, I seem to be unable to get a watch without also getting a ring specially for it. Over a year ago, at Tiffany's, I noticed a line of jewellery they have, available in Sterling Silver, callled Atlas. After I picked up my watch, I paid them a visit, and fortunately they had my exact size, so I got that as well. I think the Roman Numerals on the ring are a beautiful touch with the watch, and the satin background for the Romans is almost identical to that of the Tank dial.

I took a few pics of my own. This coming weekend, I am hoping that a friend of mine will take some really good wrist shots for me. There don't seem to be many wrist shots of the Tank Solo, so I am hoping to get a good collection.

Thanks for looking and reading all of my comments, although I do seem to have been quite "long-winded", as my Mother used to say.

Even as I start to appreciate the Tank Solo, I am thinking that it may also end up being my gold watch, when I get one. I love the size of this watch, and although I am waiting to see the new Tank LC, just looking at the dimensions makes me think it may be too large. It is really nice to have this smaller size as a change. And for a watch that will be worn comparatively little, a quartz movement makes perfect sense to me. After, all, it is still a Cartier Tank, and I can see there is nothing quite like it!
