I can't help but I have to tell you how I felt while trying it....

Despite I am a huge Seiko fan and therefore I was searching since a long time for a Tuna to try on the flesh, I never had the chance to find one in my city (or elsewhere in Italy). Few days ago walking in Duomo square I stopped as usual at Grimoldi shop window, and hidden among some nice spring drive and Ananta chrono i saw the Tuna. I was in a hurry then, but this afternoon i get back and entered the shop to try it.
As usual I've been welcomed by the Grimoldi brothers, who showed me the piece....
And here we go:

First impression: great surprise.
Actually, the watch is quite massive (even if i'd say less than expected) but incredibly light. Of course, it is titanium, with a ceramic shroud....But I own other titanium divers and are not - apparently - so light.
Wears very good on the wrist, due to the non-existing lugs (strap is fixed inside the case).

I started to look at it quite closely, and the case finishing showed to be flawless. The dark grey appearance of the case in combination with the even darker grey of the shroud gives the watch a very aggressive look. The shroud is incredibly smooth at touch, and warm.
The following part catching my attention was the crown. Call it massive is quite reductive. I unscrewed it, clicked to the date and time setting positions, and no wobbling. Instead, an impressive huge diameter tube emerges below the crown, showing what seems to be a double gasket. Again, impressive. I own several 1000m and below, never seen anything like this.

The case back really delivered me a strong feeling: i've heard and read of single piece cases, without screwed back...But this was the first time i was directly looking at it and the impression is of pure undestructibility.
Surely, this is a feeling and very personal, but i think you can understand what I mean.

Then the dial...Nothing really surprising here, the lume is excellent as expected. The bezel is very hard to move, and an additional difficulty in doing that is the presence of the shroud.

.....And the second hand is happily jumping second after second.
Yes, it is a quartz !
Looking at the rest of the watch - which has nothing to do with what we usually associate with "quartz watch" - I almost forgot this detail....

This and the cheap-appearing rubber strap makes this watch a little less appealing to me,however it is a bold piece, with a lot of personality...Surely not for everyone.

Sorry to have bored you, but I wanted to share immediately the feelings that this incredible watch gave me....

The latest Arnold & Son timepiece is not only a tribute to John Arnold’s originality and skill but also to the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds itself, cradle of Swiss watchmaking and seat of the Company.

The newest additions to the HMS1 collection feature an anthracite, cream or black dial in a classical elegant 18-carat rose gold case, a white or anthracite dial in a stainless steel case, and an 18-carat white gold case featuring a silver colored dial. The case is 40 mm in diameter and houses a manufacture hand-wound movement which is only 2.7 mm thick.

Immediately one notices the two barrels providing 80 hours power reserve. Whereas most watches in this segment of the market only provide a single barrel, the solution of having two barrels provides more constant power and more constant force, which will result in improved accuracy, something important for Arnold & Son.

With further details such as hand angling and decoration of all bridges and fine hand stitching on the alligator leather strap, this HMS1 line is a true modern expression of the traditional search for precision combined with superior craftsmanship that Arnold & Son has always pursued.
The Arnold & Son HMS1 is water-resistant to 30 meters.









Arnold & Son: a brief history
In a direct response to the British Government’s search for an answer to the problem of calculating longitude reliably at sea, John Arnold founded a watchmaking company in London in 1764. The Orient M-Force 2011 and the Seiko SKZ247K1 “FrankenMonster”.



I reviewed them separately here in the past months (M-Force review - Franken review), but only recently I realized that what is really interesting is the comparison.
Without a term of comparison, the judgement is less objective and sometimes mistaken (this is true not only for watches but for every field, from guitars to beers).
So, since I own them since some time now and they are well tested in the field (used while jogging, and when playing squash (!).
The Franken was also used in the dangerous :S waters of Canada (a swimming pool in Banff)) they are old enough to withstand a face-to-face fight.

What I did was to put them side by side and start to look/check/compare, giving my personal vote from 1 to 5.

Case:
O – Quite classic case style for a diver, with crown at 4. Pleasant matte/shiny surfaces finish. 5
S – Unusual case style, with strong character. Due to the plastic protection it looks like a sort of mini-tuna.
However the plastic shroud gives it a “cheaper” look. 4



Bezel:
O – Massive, with alternate heights to enhance grip. Quite original, with personality. A bit difficult/hard to rotate. 5
S – Not as massive or eye-catcher as one would have expected, however clicks perfectly smooth. Not very easy to grip because the “grip area” is
limited by the presence of the plastic shroud. 4

Crown:
O – Maybe due to the internal anti-shock structure surrounding the calibre, it is really very “movable” when unscrewed and extracted and gives not that much solidity feeling.
Sometimes the manual-winding position is slipping and difficult to engage. 3
S – One of the most distinctive parts of the Franken. Easy to grip/unscrew, clicks good in every position but once extracted feels a little bit “weak” and “movable” compared to what you would expect. 4

Lugs:
O – Drilled lugs, with huge spring bar. Very well done, only downside maybe a little bit close to the case, big size rubber straps can be difficult to position. 4
S – Drilled lugs, with huge spring bar. No problem in fitting a new rubber strap. 5

Strap/Bracelet:
O – The original metal bracelet, despite massive, is very far from the overall quality of the watch itself.
The pin and collar connection system works very badly (you can risk to loose a collar easily) and I was forced to glue them all. 2
S – The original bracelet was really massive and in line with the quality level of the watch itself.
A nice addition of character is the “squared” pattern engraving on it which recalls the dial and the bezel sides. 5

(as you will notice, I replaced both bracelets with more comfortable, practical and lighter rubber straps).

Wearability:
O – Despite the size, the watch sits very well on my wrist. Very comfortable, not too heavy. Due to the relatively low height, It can be worn under a (not too tight) sleeve. 5
S – It is indeed a massive watch but on the wrist it looks not excessively big. Good comfort even if sometimes the crown can dig your hand when strap is loose.
The crown and the height however prevents it to be placed under most sleeves. 4

Dial:
O – Flat, black dial. Indexes are surrounded by a metallic shiny profile, as well as the hands. Both are covered with luminova, which shines moderately in the dark.
Power reserve indicator is not “luminated” and it is not visible in the dark (however the red second hand tip is, and tells you whether the watch is working or not).
The power reserve indicator jointly with the presence of the Orient logo and the M-Force sign makes the dial a bit busy.
Date indication (white disc, black digits) at 9, small and not easy to read. Shappire crystal. 4
S – Multi level black dial, with the central part engraved with a “squared” pattern and the outer part (where indexes are) raised and flat.
Indexes are simple trapezoids covered with Lumibrite, as are the hands.
Nothing metal-shining here, but I’ve never seen anything burning like this in the dark, you can actually read a book using the Franken as a torch.
Day-date indication, black disc and white digits. Acrylic crystal. 5



Movement:
O – Orient 40N5A, 21600, 22j. hacking and manual winding feature. 5
S – Seiko 7S36, 21600, 23j. Non hacking, non manual-winding. 4



Bottom line:
Giving the score above, to me the Seiko wins by very little.
However both are exceptional tool watches especially when considering the price/value/performances ratio.
(It is important to notice that they belong more or less to the same price range).

The Orient is a bit more “elegant” if we may say so, and at first sight the overall look, quality and finishing appears higher than in the Seiko.
It could well be an everyday watch.
However at a second sight the “composition” is not so harmonic especially due to the busy dial (but this is a pure matter of taste).
Nice additions as the manual winding capability (to be tuned) and the shappire crystal are perhaps not so necessary in watches like these (if not present might keep the price point below Seiko’s).
My suggestions to Orient: re-organize the dial layout to improve readability, improve the crown functionality, greatly improve the bracelet quality.

The Seiko is a pure tough heavy duty watch, very much like a T-800 Terminator.
Not much to add, except that you will hardly wear it outside a sporty environment, preferably wet.
You can consider it a wannabe tuna, or a first step in the tuna world: depending on your personal perspective (and wallet) this can be a bad or good point.
My suggestions to Seiko: remove the daydate window to improve the tough technical appearance, replace the cheap-looking shroud with a higher quality material (metal or ceramic).

Of course, this comparison relies on my taste and experience only….
It would be great to hear from any of you owning the same pieces what is your feeling, impression, experience.

Despite the economic crisis, swiss brands did quite well as the opening of many new single-brand boutiques demonstrates.

Also, new interesting innovations and models have been released.
Among the most interesting innovations I'd mention the research for very high frequency escapments, such as the ones released by Tag-Heuer.
Concerning the model that caught my attention more, I would like to mention the UR-110 by Urwerk.
The reason why I choose this watch is its capability to be futuristic in its look and way to show time, while being at the same time faithful to the brand’s heritage (despite relatively short).

It would be interesting to hear from you which was the most interesting innovation and your 2012 favourite watch.

Just to let you know that Olivier Watches is not an honest watch company. They took my order May 2012 and I paid a US$200 deposit. They have not delivered my watch and attempts to contact them went unanswered. I wrote several times to Roland Tenenbaum but was promised he will deliver. First he blames my emails going to his "Junk" mail folder but when I sent him another email asking for an update, I got no response.

So be careful. I have been cheated and hope that fellow watch lovers do not get cheated by Helson Watches. Sorry if this is not the right forum but I sure don't want fellow watch enthusiasts to be cheated. Moderators, feel free to relocate this post or delete it if you deem it inappropriate.

Piaget Limelight Gala is a straight forward lady Quartz, While the Calibre 690P movement probably won't get us at Revolution excited, it showcases Piaget's usual (or unusual) flair in design. Lovely aesthetic, nice curves complemented by Piaget gem setting. Piaget said the watch design was inspired by the "resolutely fanciful 1960s spirit", what I see from the watch is the even more sensual "69".



Technically more impressive is the Piaget Emperador Coussin Ultra-Thin Minute Repeater. The case is only 9.4mm thick with the new Calibre 1290P measuring only 4.8mm. Known more for their jewellery watches for ladies, Piaget has tried hard in recent years to also impress the technically inclined watch buyers. From the original Emperador Tourbillon created by Cartier's Carole Forestier, Piaget has created no less than 35 in-house calibres within a relative short 14 years (short in watchmaking development timeline).





With their huge commercial success in China, Piaget has chosen to focus mainly on the Chinese market and hence the popular elegant ultra thin watch segment. This new Minute Repeater follows their recent trail of Ultra-Thin movements and watches, including the automatic Cal 1200P, hand-wound shaped tourbillon Cal 600P, the automatic Chronograph Cal 880P, the Automatic perpetual calendar Cal 855P and the automatic tourbillon calibre 1270P.





This new Piaget Minute Repeater is the first chiming watch from the brand and it has made the Piaget complication range more complete. Certainly Minute Repeater is the most complicated watch from the brand so far and the "three years of work by six engineers" as claimed by Piaget demonstrated their commitment in the technical complication segment. Although the use of "engineers" rather than experienced watchmakers (not mutually exclusive) by Piaget is a disturbing indication of where the haute horlogerie market is going. To be fair, Piaget is far from the only brand guilty of putting modern engineering technology in front of traditional watchmaking, although is some ways, it is difficult to separate the two.





In any case, the Piaget Emperador Coussin Ultra-Thin Minute Repeater claimed a respectable volume of 64db and a damping factor of 2600, a remarkable achievement especially for the first one from Piaget. The Piaget open dial concept of the watch is also extremely eye pleasing in concept.

As previously reported the big news was a new in-house 7 day hand-wound movement from Franck Muller . . .





Speaking of big news, this was also the occasion of the launch of the Giga-Tourbillon, which is claimed to be the largest tourbillon in the world --possible qualifiers: largest wristwatch tourb (would have to check but Breguet himself made some pretty hefty tourbillons) and possibly the largest conventional wristwatch tourbillon (the Astrotourbillon, from Cartier, which is a central carrousel tourbillon, may be larger in diameter . . . hmmm, have to check.) Any way you slice it though, it's a mighty big tourbillon.



Also there were some watches from Backes and Strauss which, if they could talk, would say, "drop dead," ;-) (disclosure: borrowed phrase from NY Times review of a show of Ruhlmann deco furniture. I steal from the best. Besides, it's apropos.)



First night festivities: a party on the beach, after which some of us went for a refreshing swim in the Med.





Second night gala was at the Hotel de Paris, where we were greeted out front by some otherworldly creatures . . .







Some of the head-turning entertainment from the evening --a piano performance in 360 degrees (tourbillon theme again?)

Up early the next morning for a flight back to New York . . . but I wasn't going to be home for long. 2 days back and then, Le Brassus . . . and Berlin.

From my hotel: view of the Bay of Naples, under a sun which a few degrees further south bakes the Sahara but in slightly northern latitudes makes for a pleasant lassitude (unless you're driving --yes, it pleases me to say, everything you have heard about Italian drivers is true.)



What do you do in Naples with an afternoon to kill? Visit Pompeii, of course. You go in thinking you're going to walk through a movie set. You realize, as you wander through the ruins, that you are in a very, very haunted City of the Dead. 20,000 souls died here in one day in AD 65. Yes, there are plaster molds of bodies of the victims, but even at a remove of nearly 2000 years, they're just too immediate; took pictures of one but I still don't care to look at it.









Mount Vesuvius is very much an active volcano. Eruptions on the scale of the one that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum happen only once every few thousand years, but even smaller eruptions could cause widespread devastation and loss of life; currently the government's evacuation plan assumes an eruption of VEI 4 (Volcanic Explosivity Index) strength, which would require around 600,000 persons to be evacuated over a one week period. Efforts are ongoing to reduce the number of persons living close to the volcano, and to streamline evacuation so that it could take place over 1-2 days rather than a week. Pompeii is eerie at nightfall --I'm not a superstitious person but if I were ever to say a place felt haunted, this would be it.

Next day was the main event: the presentation of the unique piece for the 200th anniversary of the Queen of Naples watch. This took place in Naples at the Capodimonte Palace, which was the residence of Caroline Murat and which is today (and I did not realize this until I was walking to the lunch in one of the ballrooms and realized I was walking past one of the most incredible collections of Old Master art I've ever seen) a world-class art museum as well. If you go to Naples, don't miss it.

Monte Capello at 514 meters is the highest point on the island, and the view from the road that skirts the peak, which connects the two towns of Capri and Anacapri, is . . . well, like this:

How some people went in and came out with plates of fresh fruit instead of pastry I cannot understand but clearly there are some made of sterner stuff than I.



Limoncello is a big deal here. You put it in the freezer in your hotel room and drink it inadvisedly after a long evening, or, more wisely, at the beginning of a short one.

We then took a very lovely boat tour around the circumference of the Island. Capri being a much beloved hideaway of the insanely mega-rich, it is possible to see more than your fair share of James Bond villain-worthy megayachts idling in the unbelievably blue water.



The very famous Blue Grotto of Capri. The island only comes down to meet the sea in one or two places (the harbor's one of them) and almost the entire rest of the island is sheer cliffs plunging into the Med, whose bottom is around 30 meters down. Here and there, however, the action of the sea has carved caves and grottos deep into the base of the cliffs. Just the place to surprise a nereid at her bath.



It was tough to leave the next day --we'd had wonderful weather during our stay but the morning we left for Naples (again, by hydrofoil --Breguet did things first-class all the way and then some) it was overcast, as if the Island were sad to see us go. We were sad to go, I don't mind saying. However, some of us had a date in Monaco . . .

Dubey & Schaldenbrand recently celebrated the opening of two new stores in North America; Lenox Jewelers in Fairfield, Connecticut, on November 10th, and Medawar Fine Jewelers in Palos Verdes, Southern California, on November 17th.

Both stores highlighted the brand with Grand Opening events so that their loyal clientele could preview the collections and meet the Dubey & Schaldenbrand team.

IWC's involvements in the motion picture industry is not new. They had hosted an exclusive Filmmakers Dinner at the Cannes International Film Festival on several occasions. The brand has also presented US$100,000 to the Gulf Filmmaker Award winer director maysoon Pachachi at the Dubai International Film Festival a week ago. Now IWC is the Official ‘Festival-Time’ Partner of the Tribeca Film Festival, which will be held for the twelfth time in spring 2013.

The Tribeca Film Festival has screened more than 1,400 films from over 80 countries since its first edition in 2002. Since its inception, the Festival has attracted an international audience of more than 4 million attendees and has generated an estimated 750 million U.S. dollars in economic activity for New York City. So here's the first batch. This was all the way back in September when, thanks to Christian Dior, I had a chance to visit Bunter SA, where the high end gem cutting and setting for Dior jewelry watches (and a lot of other companies too) goes on; to visit the Dior boutique in Paris (including the haute couture atelier, and the almost unbelievably small space where Christian Dior started his business in 1946) and, most movingly, Christian Dior's childhood home in Granville, Normandy, which is now a museum commemorating his life and work.



First stop: Bunter SA. The CEO, Claude Sanz, showed us the diagrams that are made as plans for cutting and faceting the gems that will eventually go onto watch cases. It is an especially unforgiving type of gem setting for several reasons: the case geometry means that the angle of each facet has to be within micron tolerances and the margin for error is much less than that for ordinary jewelry. Colored stones are a particular challenge as the stones must match exactly not only in cut, but in color and saturation as well, both of the latter subject to change depending on how the stone is cut. It's an empirical craft and the cost of a given carat weight of stones in a watch can be significantly greater than in a piece of jewelry because the amount of material discarded is so much greater --though this is an extreme example, it is sometimes necessary to discard up to 90% of a top quality colored gemstone just to get a match to the other stones on a case.



It's hard to believe but the work is all done by hand and eye. This young man has spent his entire professional life learning and practicing his trade and can polish a diamond to micron tolerances entirely manually. He does use a micrometer, but I couldn't do it with ten micrometers.

Assembly, casing, and testing of Dior watches takes place in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, at Les Ateliers Horlogers Dior SA.

The signature element in Dior's watch collections are the ornamented functional rotors for the automatic winding systems, whose movement is controlled by matching the mass of each rotor to a custom-adjusted tension in the slipping bridle of the mainspring. Normally a rotor's freedom of movement drops as tension in the mainspring increases; Dior's watches are made so that the oscillations are still relatively large in amplitude even when the mainspring's fully wound, in order not to lose the visual effect.





Next stop: Paris by TGV (beats flying) to visit the haute couture salon, still on the original premises of the original Dior boutique at 30 Avenue Montaigne.



Flowers were a lifelong inspiration for Dior . . .



The Raf Simons collection was still in New York, alas, but there were some gorgeous haute couture gowns that were a great illustration of the aesthetic continuum on which both Dior's couture products and watches lie.



This gown was a perfect case in point . . .



The appearance of easy rhythm in movement and organic transitions of color is actually the result of an elaborately and carefully controlled physical structure, and an equally careful control of saturation, color and transparency. Those ruffles, by the way, are all hand-gathered and stitched, one at a time.



This may be the flat-out sexiest garment I've ever seen. It's entirely made of (lots) of feathers --it beguiles the eye as it invites the hand.

Luxury Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen and the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) presented the prestigious IWC Gulf Filmmaker Award at an exclusive ceremony at the One&Only Royal Mirage last night in the presence of celebrity guests such as Cate Blanchett and Kevin Spacey. Cate Blanchett, President of the IWC Gulf Filmmaker Award jury, presented the Filmmakers Award to Maysoon Pachachi, director of “Nothing Doing in Baghdad”. Singer Bryan Ferry CBE provided the evening’s musical highlights.

“We believe new voices and viewpoints should be heard and are convinced that talent and stories from the Gulf region deserve an international stage. We are proud to be a partner of the Dubai International Film Festival, and through the IWC Gulf Filmmaker Award we are able to contribute to Arab storytelling in general and to the funding of a new film project for established and upcoming directors here in the Middle East in particular,” Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, says.

The IWC Gulf Filmmaker Award ceremony took place last night and was attended by 300 guests. Among them were IWC Friends of the Brand and Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett and Kevin Spacey as well as, British director and DIFF Lifetime Achivement honoree Michael Apted, CMG, Raja Al Jadawi and Sherine Adel. The Australian actress presented the IWC Filmmakers Award to Maysoon Pachachi, whose project is “Nothing Doing in Baghdad,” based loosely on a true story, set during one of the Iraqi capital’s most volatile modern-day chapters.

The winning director was also presented with an IWC watch engraved with the wording “For the Love of Cinema”. Cate Blanchett and her jury colleagues Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, Abdulhamid Juma, Chairman of DIFF, Masoud Amralla Al Ali, Artistic Director of DIFF and Olivier Père, General Director of the Parisbased Arte France Cinema, were tasked with selecting the winner from various submissions. Finalists in a highly competitive field comprised London-based documentarian Maysoon Pachachi (“Iranian Journey”, “Bitter Water”); Bahraini writer Mohammed Rashed Bu-Ali; Fujairah-born Abdullah Al Kaabi (“The Philosopher”); and Dubai’s own Ali F. Mostafa (“City of Life”).

After observing the evolution of Montblancʼs Nicolas Rieussec chronographs, one might be tempted to conclude that time is a disc. Montblanc first used rotating discs to replace the hands on the chronographʼs counters for sixty elapsed seconds and thirty elapsed minutes. A rotating disc was afterwards installed to indicate the hour in a second time zone. And now the Montblanc manufacture debuts its Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours, which relies on two discs, one atop the other, to show not only the twelve hours, but to also indicate whether each of the dozen is a daytime or night-time hour.

Although the time display on the Rising Hours chronograph is new and revolutionary, this timepiece is nevertheless a typical member of the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Collection, which first embodied an outstandingly successful idea in 2008, when the brand launched the first wristwatch chronograph with a genuinely new look in which the discs turn and its hands stand still. Now this principle has undergone further evolution to display the “ordinary” (i.e. non-elapsed) hours, which Montblancʼs engineers have augmented with an appealing complication: theyʼve built a day/night indication into the hour display. But letʼs take things one step at a time….

A difference like day and night

A digital hour display wouldnʼt have been anything new per se. The hour numerals simply come and go beneath a stationary index, while the minute-hand turns its circles in the conventional manner. But the way the hours are shown on the Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours is technically revolutionary. Like all Nicolas Rieussec models, this watch too has a slightly off-centre dial for the ordinary time of day. But instead of an hourhand, there is a circular aperture at the “12” in which a disc bearing Arabic numerals for the twelve hours turns below a little triangular index.

Aficionados will no doubt have seen similar digital hour displays on other timepieces in the past, but the Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours goes one decisive step farther: its hour numerals change colour depending on the time of day or night. The numerals are pale blue during night time hours and black during the day. At a glance, this interesting function assigns each hour to the day or night and makes it easier to properly set the date display so that the date changes correctly at midnight rather than mistakenly at midday.



A New Montblanc manufacture calibre with a patented day/night mechanism

This unusual time display is made possible by the new manufacture calibre MB R220, which boasts an elaborate patented mechanism consisting of two rotating discs positioned one atop the other. The Arabic numerals 1 to 12 are cut from the upper disc. This twelve-hour disc turns above the bicolour day/night disc, which is half pastel blue and half black so that a light or dark hue appears in the skeletonised numeral in the window depending on the time of day or night. The twelve-hour disc rotates continually, while the day/night disc turns in intervals and at variable speeds to produce the desired colour change (pale blue for the night, black for the day) in the cut-out numerals. This complex motion is controlled with the aid of a Maltese cross mechanism consisting of two cam-like wheels. One of these cams is mounted on the propelling staff of the day/night disc; the other is affixed to an extension of the hour-staff. Each camʼs profile is specially shaped so that the cams turn idly past one another between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. (and again between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.); the day/night disc is accordingly motionless throughout both these intervals. Meshing begins at 3 a.m. (and 3 p.m.). This engagement causes the day/night disc to turn at an increasingly faster pace until two teeth on either side engage in a way that the day/night disc no longer accelerates but instead continues to turn synchronously with the twelve-hour disc – this occurs from 4:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. (and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.). Afterwards, the day/night disc decelerates between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. (and between 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.) until the meshing is completely separated, whereupon the day/night disc comes to a standstill.

This patented “Rising Hours” mechanism is particularly self-explanatory twice a day: at six oʼclock each morning, the pierced digit “6” appears light blue on the left and black on the right to symbolize that night is ending and day is dawning; at six oʼclock each evening, black daylight at the left yields to pastel blue night-time hours at the right.

In addition to this double-disc mechanism, four other disc displays rotate in the Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours. The day of the week is shown in a window at the “9” and the date appears in an aperture at the “3”. Naturally, the chronographʼs function likewise relies on the same unmistakable concept, with one disc to count sixty elapsed seconds and another to tally up to thirty elapsed minutes. The technical basis of the calibre with integrated chronograph is largely identical with the movements in other Nicolas Rieussec models. This latest chronograph likewise has only one button, which is unconventionally but ergonomically positioned at “8 oʼclock”, where the wearerʼs thumb can conveniently operate it. In accord with tradition, this chronograph is controlled by a column-wheel which couples and uncouples in a very modern and low-wear manner via a vertical friction coupling. Also noteworthy are the innovative profiles on the gear-trainʼs teeth, which optimize energy transfer while minimizing both wear and energy consumption. The rate is regulated by a massy 10-mm-diameter screw balance which oscillates very regularly thanks to its high moment of inertia (12 mgcm²) and its frequency of 28,000 A/h (4 Hz). The regularity of the rate is further enhanced by the double barrel, which amasses a 72-hour power reserve and maintains a very constant level of torque throughout a lengthy interval. A self-winding mechanism keeps the power reserve constantly high as long as the watch is worn.

Tradition and aesthetic

The exterior of the Rising Hours unmistakably announces that this is a Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec timepiece and instantly shows that it is indeed an unusual one. Characteristic features include rotating discs under motionless pointers for the elapsed minutes and seconds, as well as a two-armed bridge at “6 oʼclock” with bright red ruby bearings which makes the dial look as though it was smiling. Above it is the off-centre dial to show the ordinary time of day or night via a skeletonised minute-hand and digital hour numerals. The day of the week appears in a semicircular aperture at its left, the date in a similar window at the right. The unoccupied spaces between and alongside these displays are embellished with grain dʼorge (barleycorn) guilloche, which ranks among the most traditional decorative techniques in the art of watchmaking.

This timekeeping microcosm is ensconced inside a classically round, 43-mm-diameter case made of 18 ct red gold with finely terraced horns. A brown alligator-leather strap with large reptilian scales is affixed between the horns. A triply folding clasp made of red gold closes and opens the strap. The fluted crown, which is likewise made of 18 ct red gold, bears a mother-of-pearl inlay shaped like Montblancʼs emblem. The domed sapphire crystal above the dial is antireflective on both its surfaces. A second pane of sapphire is inserted into the screwed back to reveal the winding rotor, which is milled from solid red gold: the high specific gravity of this precious metal facilitates this componentʼs work.

The Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours chronograph is also available in 950 platinum and in stainless steel versions. The platinum variant is limited to 28 timepieces, each of which is affixed to a grey alligator-leather strap with a white gold folding clasp. The stainless steel version has a black alligator-leather strap with a folding clasp.

Homage to Nicolas Rieussec (1781 – 1866)

With its launch of the Nicolas Rieussec chronographs, Montblanc enriched the world of watches with an entirely new design inspired by watches for measuring brief intervals that were first created by Nicolas Rieussec, an ingenious watchmaker and the inventor of the chronograph. Rieussecʼs chronographe encreur (i.e. ink chronograph) passed its test in 1821 and received patent protection in 1822. This innovative “ink chronograph” measured elapsed seconds and minutes by means of rotating white enamel dials under motionless pointers culminating in ink-filled reservoirs below moveable nibs. When the user pressed a button, these nibs quickly passed through the reservoir and pecked at the dials to leave little ink markings. In this way, several short intervals could be measured one after the other. The elapsed times were literally written in ink on white enamel, so Rieussecʼs coinage of the neologism “chronograph” was perfectly appropriate because in Ancient Greek, chronos means “time” and graphein means “to write”. After the user had read the individual times, he wiped the dials clean and was ready to measure the next intervals. To commemorate the creative watchmaker Nicolas Rieussec and his trailblazing invention, which numbers among the most popular horological complications nowadays, Montblanc in 2008 launched the Nicolas Rieussec chronographs, which have rotating discs rather than chronographʼs hands. These discs on which time was literally written build the bridge that connects the Montblanc watch manufacture with the Montblanc writing-implement manufacture.

Swiss formation will perform works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Ottorino Respighi and Félix
Mendelssohn, under the authoritative direction of Kazuki Yamanda, guest conductor of the orchestra.
The internationally acclaimed solo violinist, Vadim Repin, will play his 1743 Bonjour by Guarneri del
Gesù on this occasion. At the end of the exhibition, the Antonio Stradivari Foundation will present

Breguet, the world’s most prestigious watch brand, brought the ancient art of guilloche to Miami Beach as part of the city-wide Art Basel festivities over the weekend. From December 6th to the 9th, Breguet took part in AD Oasis at the Raleigh Hotel to celebrate innovators and designers in lifestyle luxury.

Breguet Boutique at Bal Harbour Shops hosted a booth complete with the latest collection of watches and a master dial-maker from the Breguet manufacturer in Switzerland. Guests were able to view some of Breguet’s most exquisite designs and witness Breguet’s master dial-maker demonstrate the art of guilloche, an age old craft invented by Breguet that uses a rose engine to etch intricate patterns onto watch dials. The Breguet interactive booth also allowed visitors to try their hands at etching guilloche patterns onto watch dials.

As part of the luxury lifestyle experience, attendees were treated to spa treatments, gourmet cuisine, culinary demonstrations, libation stations, digital fun and crowd sourced artwork.

The case and dial construction are inspired by racing cars' weight reduction technology, making this piece the ultimate tool for high altitude sports experience. Amidst the glamour and excitement of Miami Art Basel, amfAR and Piaget teamed up to
host one of the week’s most chic late night parties at the Soho Beach House. Held in a
specially-built tent right on the beach, the event drew notables from the world’s of art,
film, food and fashion, including Russell Simmons, Kenneth Cole, Riccardo Tisci,
Stephanie March, Brian Atwood, Joseph Altuzarra and Bobby Flay. The always
glamorous, Dita Von Teese made a dramatic entrance with fellow Angeleno, Liz
Goldwyn, along with models Lily Kwong, Elle Evans and Liliana Matthaus.

Joining Larry Boland, Piaget’s president of North America, to lend their support to the
cause, were Piaget polo ambassadors, Marc Ganzi and Jeff Hall, who recently won
the International Cup for Team USA against England.

The crowd was kept entertained by a line-up of top DJs, including DJ Kiss, Mia
Moretti, Caitlin Moe and Honey Dijon. A focal point of the evening was the silent
auction with world-class artwork from Cindy Sherman, Sam Taylor-Wood, Robert
Rauschenberg, William Eggleston, Ryan McGinley and Steven Klein among others.

Piaget has had a longstanding commitment to the arts, and has been a partner with
amfAR on the Inspiration Gala series since its inception, hosting events in New York,
Los Angeles, Sao Paulo and Paris.
