DECEMBER 2012 - Officine Panerai announces the launch of its new corporate website, already online at the address www.panerai.com. This has been created to convey the unique world of Officine Panerai’s history, design and high technology watchmaking as well as to keep enthusiasts of the haute horlogerie brand well informed. The new site is the culmination of a strategy of revitalising the brand in the digital landscape, the most up-to-date means of spreading the strongly recognisable identity of the brand.

Through its the structure, graphic impact and content, the architecture of the new site reflects the brand’s pillars of communication which revolve around its long history, its immediately distinctive design, its manufacture watchmaking and its passion, which in the world of Panerai is always associated with the world of the sea. All these aspects are described in detail and illustrated by a rich archive of facts and illustrations, each of which is shared across various channels and digital networks. The high-resolution images, the videos and the associated apps make the site accessible when on the move and on different media. The website is available in three languages (English, Italian and Chinese) and more will be added in future, including French, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and German.

The heart of the site is the Collections section, which is extremely functional as a result of the site’s special search engine. By entering any details about the watch – the reference, calibre, functions, materials and so on – the range is filtered so that only models meeting the requirements are displayed in the context of the relevant Panerai Collections: Historic, Contemporary, Specialities and Special Editions. Each watch is then described with a wealth of detail, including its technical specification, materials, maintenance recommendations and relevant accessories. These are presented in words and pictures, using high quality audio-visual techniques with a strong emotional impact. On the occasion of the annual Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, a special detailed across-the-board survey will be created about the activities of the brand, including previews of the new collections presented there.





The site devotes a large area to the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel, which brings together all the brand’s development activities, production of parts and assembly of movements. In the relevant section, navigation is by chapters, each one using words, pictures and films to describe the various production stages of the watch: the research, the design of the various components, their assembly, the meticulous hand-finishing and the rigorous quality control.





Directly related to the theme of the manufacture is the wide range of movements made in-house by Officine Panerai, devised by the research and development department, the ‘Workshop of Ideas’ also situated in Neuchâtel. These are presented using original video content as well as photographs and technical specifications, and they can all be easily linked to the Panerai models in which they are used.





The Network section enables the extensive international network of Panerai Boutiques and the prestigious selected distributors of the brand all over the world to be located easily on a map. The Boutiques page is interactive, that is, it enables requests to be sent and information to be received through the sales point’s e-mail address and the relevant telephone numbers, in the case of mobile devices.



News & Events is the section which reports the latest news of the brand, an area which will of course continuously grow and develop. As well as news associated with the world of classic yachting, epitomised by the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the section will carry up-todate topical information about the cultural activities which Officine Panerai is promoting. This section is complementary to the one devoted to the company’s social responsibility initiatives which are becoming increasingly important: initially, a detailed description is devoted to the
new factory’s zero impact on the environment.



The site www.panerai.com is a platform filled with material devoted to the brand and its products. It will continually be expanded through the creation of dedicated areas, such as that devoted to Panerai’s historic original models which made the brand a cult for collectors. The launch of the site is being accompanied by a series of events aimed at achieving a high degree of visibility, a series of digital campaigns relating to the products and the creation of a destination for the many social media followers of the brand.





Officine Panerai
Founded in 1860 in Florence as a workshop, retail shop and watchmaking school, for many years Officine Panerai supplied precision instruments to the Italian Navy, particularly items relating to the requirements of the special submarine forces. The designs developed in this period – among which were the Luminor and Radiomir watches – were covered by the provisions of military secrecy for several years and their launch on the international market took place after the acquisition of the brand by the Richemont group in 1997. Today in its manufacture at Neuchâtel, Officine Panerai develops and produces its own movements and watches. Officine Panerai presents the new Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio, a sophisticated haute
horlogerie model in which the classic Panerai design is perfectly combined with the technical
aspects of high quality sports watchmaking.

The Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio is a split-seconds chronograph with vertical clutch
and twin column wheels, and it offers numerous functions that are characteristic of top-of-therange
mechanical watchmaking, all assembled in the P.2006 movement, entirely developed
and created in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel.

The split-seconds function, also known as rattrapante, operates two hands that are superimposed
and partially independent: the first is entirely controlled by the button at 8 o’clock, which starts,
stops and resets the chronograph hand; the second, controlled by the button at 10 o’clock, is
used for measuring partial times or a second event simultaneous with the first. To make it easier
and clearer to read, the hand of the small minute counter moves in jumps instead of continuously.
The P.2006 hand-wound movement has a long power reserve of eight days, a traditional duration
for Panerai watches. This is achieved by means of a special patented system of three spring
barrels. The remaining power reserve can be read on the dial from a linear indicator above the
number six.

To enable the watch to be synchronised perfectly with a reference signal, the P.2006 movement
also has a seconds reset function, which zeroes the seconds hand by stopping the balance
wheel until the winding crown has been returned to the running position.

The Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio has a brushed titanium case 47 mm in diameter,
fitted with the classic lever device which hermetically seals the winding crown to ensure waterresistance
to 10 atmospheres (equivalent to a depth of about 100 metres).

On the back of the case, in the centre of the 12-sided caseback, is a sapphire crystal window
through which the elegant finish of the P.2006 movement can be seen.

The bezel is made of polished titanium and surrounds a large black dial of great simplicity and
sporting elegance. The structure of the dial consists of two superimposed discs with a layer of
Super-LumiNova® between them: a type of construction which has been characteristic of Panerai
watches since the 1930s, it provides great legibility and visibility even in situations of very low light,
such as underwater.

Identified by the reference PAM00530 and produced in a limited edition, the new Luminor 1950
Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio is supplied with a rubber strap. It is part of the of the Officine Panerai
Specialities collection.

Panerai Composite has a high resistance to scratches and high temperatures, but it also very comfortable to wear, with a matt appearance which gives the watch a particular sports elegance.

The technology of Panerai Composite is combined with the 1930s appeal of the classic Radiomir cushion case in the new Radiomir Composite® 3 Days – 47mm and the Radiomir Composite® Black Seal 3 Days Automatic – 45mm, two models with movements completely designed and created by Officine Panerai in the manufacture of Neuchâtel.

The Radiomir Composite® 3 Days – 47mm (PAM00504) has a cushion case in brown Panerai Composite, surrounding a dial of the same colour. Featuring the classic alternation of linear markers and large figures at the cardinal points, this dial has the construction devised by Officine Panerai in the late 1930s to enhance readability even under very poor lighting conditions: two superimposed discs contain the luminous material, the light from which shines through the apertures in the upper one corresponding to the markers. Its quintessential design is enhanced by the small seconds dial at nine o’clock and by the inscription Radiomir Panerai.

Through the ample burnished sapphire crystal back of the Radiomir Composite® 3 Days, the hand-wound P.3000 manufacture movement can be admired. This calibre has a power reserve of three days, achieved by two spring barrels connected in series, and it is an impressive 161⁄2 lignes in diameter. It has large brush-finished bridges with anglage (chamfering) and a variable inertia balance wheel of large diameter (13.2 mm), which oscillates at a frequency of 3 Hz. The P.3000 calibre also has the device enabling the hour hand to be set in jumps of one hour, so that adjusting it does not interfere with the movement of the minute hand or the running of the watch.

Italian watchmaker Officine Panerai celebrates a decade of success for its LANDMARK PRINCE’S Boutique in Hong Kong today with the opening of a week-long exclusive exhibition of iconic Panerai timepieces from the past 10 years. The Panerai LANDMARK PRINCE’S Boutique was the brand’s first boutique in Asia, when it opened in 2002, and the second worldwide after the historic Panerai boutique in Florence, Italy.

The exhibition, which will be open to the public at the Landmark Atrium in Central until October 9, was unveiled to a selection of VIPS, business partners and media from the Asia Pacific Region with a cocktail, followed by a private dinner at 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana under the ministrations of the celebrity chef Umberto Bombana, the only Italian 3 Michelin Stars Chef outside Italy and a veritable ambassador of Italian taste and culture worldwide.



The display of 48 exclusive timepieces was made possible by the generosity of private collectors who selflessly shared their prized timepieces for the exhibition, thereby presenting a rare and exclusive opportunity for visitors to admire these remarkable pieces of innovation under one roof in Hong Kong.

Visitors who stepped within the three-sided semi-transparent walls surrounding the central booth innovatively shaped like a Luminor case were immediately transported to Panerai’s world of Italian heritage and design. The top of the booth shows the iconic simple Luminor dial with Super-LumiNova® effects on the hour indices.



The 48 iconic timepieces are housed within two double-sided showcases divided into four different zones located at each linear hour index. The outer faces of all 8 showcases are also lit by the glow of Super-LumiNova® effects. The four zones reflect the brand’s fundamental values, the authenticity, exclusivity and rarity of its products and the brand’s outstanding identity that embodies a unique mix of classic Italian design and innovative Swiss technology and craftsmanship.



Zone A – History enables visitors to step into Officine Panerai’s rich Italian heritage with 12 vintage pieces including the Radiomir - 47mm (PAM00021) and the Mare Nostrum - 52mm (PAM00300). The Radiomir – 47mm was Panerai’s first special edition timepiece after the brand’s acquisition by the Richemont group in 1997. The timepiece was a reedition of the first Radiomir produced in 1938 and was the first to carry the Radiomir name. Introduced in 2010, the Mare Nostrum – 52mm was a special re-edit of the chronograph that had originally been designed as a deck officer’s watch for the Italian Navy in 1943.



Zone B – Exclusivity celebrates some of the most exclusive pieces in the past decade and includes the Luminor Marina Militare – 47mm (PAM00217) and the rare Luminor Marina – 44mm (PAM00412) among the exhibited 18 timepieces.

The Luminor Marina Militare – 47mm (PAM00217) is the first Panerai lefthanded timepiece with a Luminor 1950 case, a special edition highly soughtafter by collectors. Also, the Luminor Marina - 44mm (PAM00412) is a boutique special edition created for and only available in Panerai’s Hong Kong boutiques. The caseback is personalized with the intricate engraving of the Hong Kong skyline featuring the Bank of China Tower in the foreground.

Part of the Contemporary Collection, the Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio (PAM00389) is powered by the inhouse automatic P.9000 calibre and is the latest novelty of the Italian brand, presented for the first time in the Asia Pacific Region. The special construction of the titanium case makes it remarkably resistant to magnetic fields and the case was inspired by the models made by the Panerai for the Egyptian navy in the 1950s. The L’Astronomo (PAM0036502) is the most complicated wristwatch ever created by Panerai. Fitted with the in-house hand-wound mechanical P.2005/G movement, the watch was created as a tribute to Galileo Galilei and features the Tourbillon function, tailor made with a sky chart, sunrise and sunset indicators and equation of time.

Zone D – Innovation features groundbreaking developments in special materials exemplified by 9 models, including the Radiomir Composite Marina Militare 8 Giorni – 47mm (PAM00339) and the Radiomir 8 Days GMT Oro Rosso – 45mm (PAM00395).

The Panerai Composite is formed through a complex process of plasma micro-arcs ceramisation that results in a unique material that guarantees comfort, great aesthetics, lightness and resistance to knocks, scratches and high temperatures. The Red Gold for the casing of the PAM00395 was only introduced by Panerai in 2012 and is the 5NPt, a special alloy that holds an unusually high percentage of copper and platinum, thus giving it both depth of color as well as preventing oxidation.

The last highlight is the special display of the Luminor 1950 3 Days – 47mm (PAM00372) case evolution, located in the central area of the Exhibition, presented to showcase the authenticity and the attention to the smallest historical details of every Panerai timepiece.

The exhibition will be laid out in four zones that are reflective of the brand’s fundamental values of a rich history; the authenticity, exclusivity and rarity of its products; and the brand’s outstanding identity that embodies its heritage of both classic Italian design and innovative Swiss technology.



Zone A – History, visitors will be able to appreciate the rich Officine Panerai history steeped in the chronicles of the Italian Navy in the 19th century, which included sturdy precision diving timepieces. These vintage pieces from both the Luminor and Radiomir lines were only launched to the public starting from the late 90s.

December 2012: a fleet of vintage yachts which have made sailing history is voyaging from Cascais

in Portugal, heading for Barbados. This is the Panerai Transat Classique 2012: hundreds

of enthusiasts including owners, captains and crews are competing in a quadrennial race which

not only celebrates the elegance, the beauty, the remarkable craftsmanship and the uniqueness

which are typical features of every vintage yacht, but which is also a challenge bringing out the

strength, courage and valour of people faced with the power of the sea. The participants in the

Panerai Transat Classique 2012 are travelling 4,000 miles in yachts which in some cases boast

histories of a hundred years or more, driven by the power of the wind and the ocean currents, but

above all by the great passion that unites all lovers of the sea.

Officine Panerai, sponsor of the race, is celebrating the most spectacular race of the 2012 classic

yachting season with the Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio, an exclusive Special

Edition distinguished by an engraving of the logo of the Panerai Transat Classique 2012 on the back

of the case. The watch has been made in a limited edition of 500 units, one of them earmarked for

the owner of the yacht winning the transatlantic race.

In honour of the Panerai Transat Classic 2012, Officine Panerai has created a model of sophisticated

horological quality, every detail of which has its roots in the past of the brand, which has always

been connected to the sea as a result of its historic association with the Italian Navy.

The Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio is a split-seconds chronograph with vertical clutch

and twin column wheels, and it offers numerous functions that are characteristic of top-of-the-

range mechanical watchmaking, all assembled in the P.2006 movement, entirely developed

and created in the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel.

The split-seconds function, also known as rattrapante, operates two hands that are superimposed

and partially independent: the first, controlled by the button at 8 o’clock, is the chronograph hand;

the second, controlled by the button at 10 o’clock, is used for measuring partial times or a second

event simultaneous with the first. To make it easier and clearer to read, the hand of the small

minute counter moves in jumps instead of continuously.

The P.2006 hand-wound movement has a long power reserve of eight days, a traditional duration

for Panerai watches. This is achieved by means of a special patented system of three spring

barrels. The remaining power reserve can be read on the dial from a linear indicator above the

number six.

To enable the watch to be synchronised perfectly with a reference signal, the P.2006 movement

also has a seconds reset function, which zeroes the seconds hand by stopping the balance

wheel until the winding crown has been returned to the running position.

The Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio has a brushed titanium case 47 mm in diameter,

fitted with the classic lever device which hermetically seals the winding crown to ensure water-

resistance to 10 atmospheres (equivalent to a depth of about 100 metres).

The bezel is made of polished titanium and surrounds a large black dial of great simplicity and

sporting elegance. The structure of the dial consists of two superimposed discs with a layer of

Super-LumiNova® between them: a type of construction which has been characteristic of Panerai

watches since the 1930s, it provides great legibility and visibility even in situations of very low light,

such as underwater.

Identified by the reference PAM00427, the Luminor 1950 Rattrapante 8 Days Titanio is supplied

with a rubber strap. It is sold exclusively in Panerai boutiques throughout the world and at a small

Remarkable resistance to magnetic fields

For Panerai, innovation is above all about functionality, and in the Luminor Submersible 1950

Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio it is seen in its special case construction which ensures a

remarkable degree of resistance to magnetic fields: 40,000 A/m (ampere per metre), a limit more

than eight times greater than the value specified by the international standards of the Normes

de l’Industrie Horlogère Suisse (NIHS 90-10). Such a high limit is achieved by the use of a special

internal case made of soft iron of the highest purity, which encloses and isolates the movement,

forming a Faraday cage that diverts the flow of magnetic fields. The soft iron case is immediately

beneath the dial, which is made of the same material.

This case structure is useful not only in extreme environmental situations but also in daily life,

in that watches are often exposed to magnetic fields generated by electric charges and

currents emanating from objects in common use, such as household appliances, computers

and cell phones. Such magnetic fields can noticeably alter the rate of the watch and even stop

the movement: a possibility that is virtually non-existent in the new Luminor Submersible 1950

Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio.


New ceramic and titanium bezel

The soft iron internal case of the Luminor Submersible 1950 Amagnetic 3 Days Automatic Titanio

is contained within a classic Luminor Submersible case of brushed titanium, fitted with the lever

bridge which locks the winding crown and thus helps in achieving water-resistance to a depth

of 300 metres. The design of the watch includes a feature which is completely new in Panerai

watches: applied to the rotating titanium bezel, inspired by that of the models made by Panerai

for the Egyptian Navy in the 1950s, is a disc of opaque black ceramic, on which the linear and

dot-shaped titanium markers are fixed. The bezel rotates only in a clockwise direction, to prevent

accidental movement interfering with the measurement of the time of the dive.

Newport, RI, September 4th 2012 - The Museum of Yachting (MoY) 33rd Annual Classic Yacht Regatta, sponsored by Officine Panerai, was held September 1st-2nd in Newport, RI, with 55 classic sailing vessels participating in the final segment of the third annual North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Circuit.

The impressive turnout of classic yachts was recognized by all participants and sponsors as a phenomenal display of annual commitment by the skippers and crews of the many classic and vintage boats that participated in the three New England regattas. The North American Circuit of the PCYC is comprised of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (August 11th-12th, Marblehead, MA), the Opera House Cup (August 18th-19th, Nantucket, MA) and the MoY Classic Yacht Regatta (September 1st-2nd, Newport, RI).

On Sunday night, Captains and Crew joined in a festive Dinner and Prize-Giving Ceremony on the lawn in front of the Museum of Yachting and Panerai Hospitality Lounge. Winning in the 12-metre class was AMERICAN EAGLE, a 68’ red-hulled beauty built in 1964 by A.E. Luders Jr., and helmed by Rick Bready. Winning in the S-class was OSPREY, a 1936 Herreshoff owned by Sheldon Whitehouse. PLEIONE, owned and helmed by Bruce Dyson, took first honors in the Spirit of Tradition class, and Gary Gregory’s VALIANT, a 1970 Sparkman & Stephen’s 64.25’ 12-metre, took top honors in the Classic A Division, as well as bringing home the Panerai Trophy for top performance in the Overall Series. W-class 37’ sloop RACE HORSE, owned by Donald Tofias, won the Spirit of Tradition class award for the Series. Classic B Division Award for the MoY Regatta was won by the 8-metre Fife-designed QUEST, owned by Diane Palm, who also walked away with First Place Overall in the MoY competition winning the coveted Panerai timepiece, a Panerai Radiomir Black Seal Automatic 45 MM (PAM 0287). Two weeks ago in Nantucket, Toronto-based QUEST, a newcomer to the Series, also took home the Opera House Cup’s top honors.

Sail Newport, a respected and active sailing center in the region, served as the official Organizing Authority for the 33rd Annual Museum of Yachting Classic Regatta.

The much-anticipated regatta started off Saturday with crisp northerly breezes – typical of the seasonal change in the Bay – setting a course for an unusual downwind start. Southerly sea breezes kicked in later in the day, changing the playing field altogether as the trailing boats caught up with the lead contenders.

Sunday’s race did not disappoint the most competitive sailors. The day started out with light breezes that changed direction constantly, forcing the Race Committee to make a quick decision to alter the course as competitors circled in anticipation of the start. All classes were finally set on a course that took them south past Hammersmith Farm (childhood home of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis) to the mouth of Narragansett Bay, then on a downwind leg back past historic Fort Adams State Park, completing with a race under the Newport Pell Bridge and around the leeward mark near the U.S. Naval War College.

As has become Newport tradition, many of the participating yachts proudly hoisted their yacht club pennants and Panerai battle flags while circling Newport’s inner harbor for the Annual Classic Yacht Parade on Sunday morning. On -shore spectators and other sailing enthusiasts watched as the beautiful vessels embarked upon their race course start with precision, style, grace and plenty of spirit.

Likewise, Panerai’s tradition for each regatta has become to dedicate at least one day of classic sailing, before or after the race, to hosting patient and caregiver sails for the community residents who so generously host each of the N.A. regattas. Under the pennant of their founding sponsorship of Sailing Heals, a Massachusetts-based non-profit organization whose mission is to take cancer patients and their caregivers out for healing days of respite on the water, Panerai and their Host Captains sponsored local ‘VIP guests’ on three separate sailing outings on the breathtaking Narragansett Bay on Monday, September 3rd.

Tall Ship “Pride of Baltimore II” serves as ideal backdrop to kick-off 40th Anniversary of Opera House Cup, in support of local hospital and Sailing Heals

Throughout the month of August, the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge North American Circuit has graced the New England coast, with gorgeous classic racing yachts participating in regattas in Marblehead, MA (Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta, August 10th-11th), Nantucket, MA (Opera House Cup, August 19th) and the upcoming Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta in Newport, RI (September 1st and 2nd).

Last year, Panerai N.A. founded Sailing Heals, an independent non-profit organization, in an effort to bring the classic yachting experience closer to the communities that serve as the beautiful coastal backdrops for each North American PCYC regatta. Sailing Heals’ mission is to provide cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers relaxing days of healing and respite on beautiful sailing or boating vessels.

Throughout the 2012 sailing season, Sailing Heals has been hosting “VIP guests” – mostly patients of Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and Nantucket Cottage Hospital along with their caregivers and families — for relaxing daytime sails with the help and support of volunteer Host Captains and their founding sponsor.

“It’s truly a unique program that has been enthusiastically embraced by our volunteer Host Captains, and is greatly appreciated by the VIP patient guests and their families,” said Sailing Heals Executive Director Trisha Boisvert.

“I immediately understood the initiative of Sailing Heals because when I sail I totally disconnect from the world on land and remain fully immersed in the wonders of the ocean, the breeze and the boat that lets you harness them,” said Volunteer Host Captain and PCYC racing participant Alessandro Pagani, who recently hosted a VIP patient sail in Marblehead.

In addition to Panerai and PCYC Host Captains hosting dozens of sails and special events with Sailing Heals throughout the regatta season, Panerai also hosted an elegant and festive event onboard the Tall Ship Pride of Baltimore II in support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH). The event, held on August 16th, also officially kicked off the 40th Anniversary of Opera House Cup, a monumental regatta and great source of pride for the Nantucket community.

"We very much appreciated Sailing Heals coming to Nantucket to take patients sailing,” remarked NCH President and CEO Margot Hartmann in her welcoming comments. “The program connects what we do at our hospital with healing in the larger sense, by creating wonderful experiences and memories that further the healing process." In addition to NCH patients and caregivers, Sailing Heals hosted “VIP” guests from Palliative & Supportive of Nantucket (PASCON).

The most important and memorable aspects of the experience were reactions and smiles of the VIP patient and caregiver guests who participated in the various patient sails.

“I've read many times that the sea has many mystical healing powers and I'm sure there has been many a verse written comparing the ebb and flow of the tides to life itself. After spending an afternoon at sea, I would be inclined to agree,” said Nantucket resident and “VIP” guest Shelley Ferguson. “There is an indescribable feeling from actually being on the water. Maybe this is what pure happiness is? To watch my husband and son happily engaged in the running of the sailboat was a joy. I spent the day relaxing and letting them, and the crew, do all the work. Newport is one of the leading destinations in the world for sailing, the final stop in this year’s inaugural America’s Cup World Series, and one of the nation’s cultural centers for classic yachting. From veteran racers to first-time sailors, parade-goers to wooden-yacht aficionados, the festivities of MoY Classic Yacht Regatta mark the end of summer for many Newport residents and sailing enthusiasts. Historic, bucolic Fort Adams State Park serves as the center of the sailing activity and home to both the Museum of Yachting and the Panerai Hospitality Lounge: which has become a favorite reunion spot for sailors and boat-owners who come from near and far to compete for the coveted prizes and trophy.

Organizing Authority Sail Newport will oversee two days of racing, starting Saturday morning and concluding Sunday afternoon. On Sunday morning, beginning at 10:30 AM, the Annual Classic Yacht Parade – a much anticipated local event – will bring the participating crews and public together, turning the waters off Newport into a majestic sea of classic yachts, one-designs, and powerboats; many showcasing Panerai flags, yacht club pennants and pristine, colorful sails. The fleet will assemble and trace a parade course around Newport Harbor, completing their circuit in the waters surrounding Fort Adams State Park. The North American Circuit is only one portion of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, the largest international circuit reserved for classic yachts encompassing a total of ten regattas. From the West Indies island of Antigua to the Mediterranean coast of Cannes, the circuit celebrates the spirit and camaraderie of classic sailing and continues to grow year after year, with the number of boats entering the global competitions climbing to more than five hundred for the 2012 season.

Again this year, Panerai will host morning meet and greets for local sailing aficionados, affectionately named “Cappuccino with the Captains,” providing community residents with the chance to mingle with the captains and crew of the participating classic yachts before each of the PCYC races. EILEAN Exhibition

As every sailor knows, behind the scenes of each regatta are tried-and-true stories of the passionate restoration of classic boats. To celebrate the art of classic boat restoration, Panerai has constructed a photo exhibition and video featuring Panerai’s restoration of the 1936 Fife ketch, EILEAN, which will be on display near the Panerai Hospitality Lounge for each regatta of the North American circuit. EILEAN, found in disrepair in 2006 by Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati, was restored by Officine Panerai in Italy to her previous glory and, as a testament to her strength and provenance, successfully raced in this year’s Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta.


About the Museum of Yachting

For more than 25 years, the MoY has worked to preserve the culture and heritage of yachting. Situated in one of New England’s most beautiful seaside locales, the Museum celebrates the traditions of yachting through the presentation of informative exhibits and educational programming. In 2007, the Museum converged with the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS), located across Newport Harbor. Italian watch-maker Officine Panerai hosted the second regatta of the three-part Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge North American Circuit this weekend in Nantucket, MA. Fifty-one beautiful classic sailing boats, both large and small, registered for the 40th anniversary of the Opera House Cup; one of classic yachting’s most anticipated and highly regarded racing competitions. The PCYC NA Circuit also includes Marblehead’s Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta which was held last weekend under perfect sailing conditions in Marblehead, MA and the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta, to be held September 1-2 in Newport, RI.

Visiting Tall Ships Pride of Baltimore II and Lynx, heralded the start of the iconic race by delighting spectators with a mock battle displaying massive sails and firing cannons, which thrilled crews and spectators alike. On Thursday evening, to kick off the Opera House Cup, Panerai hosted a cocktail event aboard Pride II in support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Panerai’s founding sponsorship of non-profit organization Sailing Heals. Panerai, Sailing Heals and generous Host Captains have been taking patients and caregivers of the local hospital out for sails throughout the month of August to allow community residents to become more involved with the classic sailing activities for which the island is legendary.

On Sunday morning, captains and crew woke up to sunny skies with strong 10 knot winds, which made for an exciting start for the first leg of the long racecourse toward Great Point Lighthouse. By mid-afternoon, winds dissipated to a whisper, which led to 20 boats having to exit the competition and 31 boats reaching the finish line. Finesse, owned by John Tagiuri, was awarded the Gwen Gaillard “Spirit of the Race” award for pulling many of the smaller boats, mostly Alerions, back to the Harbor. The late Gwen Gaillard was part of the original group of sailors who conceived the classic boat competition more than 40 years ago in her restaurant/bar, and offered a Champagne bucket as a trophy, which led to the regatta’s charming name.

Special Mentions and Prize-Winners

Nantucket Race Week, LLC served as the organizing authority of the regatta, with assistance of the Nantucket Yacht Club and Great Harbor Yacht Club. Nantucket Race Week and the Opera House Cup are the major fundraising events for Nantucket Community Sailing, a non-profit organization that teaches over 1000 children to sail each year.

First place in the 12-meter class was Onawa, skippered by Alan Worden and Roy Weedon. The Spirit of Tradition class was won by Pleione, out of Marblehead, owned and helmed by Bruce Dyson. Quest, a newly-restored 1930 8-meter designed by William Fife III, and owned by Ronald Palm out of Toronto, took first place honors in the Classics Division and won the overall Opera House Cup and CYC regatta prize: A Panerai Radiomir Black Seal Automatic 45 MM (PAM 0287).

Heroina, a 1993 sloop skippered by Marius Swart, was awarded First to Finish.

The Robert H. Tiedemann Award for excellence in restoration was awarded to Ticonderoga, a 1936 L.F. Herreshoff vessel by Mr. Tiedemann’s widow and one of the sport’s most active classic yacht enthusiasts, Elizabeth Tiedemann.

Massachusetts Senator and avid sailing enthusiast John Kerry also raced on Wild Horses and presided over a wedding at the finish line for two of the crew members aboard.

Final Regatta in Series moves to Newport, RI

The Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge North American Circuit moves next to the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta, which is held every year in Newport, RI over Labor Day weekend and is the overall prize-giving event of the Circuit.

The Luminor Marina, bestseller of the Officine Panerai collections, is presented for the first time in the completely new size of 42 mm in the latest Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic, available in two versions: the sportier one in steel (PAM00392), and the more elegant one in red gold (PAM00393).

The new size of the Luminor 1950 case has not changed the classic proportions of this model faithfully inspired by the watches created by Panerai in the 1940s onward for the commandos of the Italian Navy. Like its period predecessors, the new Luminor Marina has the bridge with locking lever, which helps to ensure a high degree of water-resistance and also protects the winding crown from accidental shocks. The crown itself operates a convenient setting mechanism by which the hour hand is rotated in one-hour steps in either direction, also adjusting the date correspondingly, without interrupting the running of the watch.

The dial, simple and quintessential in its iconic design, has the sandwich construction devised by Panerai in the 1930s to ensure maximum clarity and legibility both underwater and in the lowest lighting conditions: two superimposed discs contain a layer of Super-LumiNova® which shines through cut-outs in the upper disc corresponding to the hour markers and numerals, providing exceptional visibility. In the version in steel the dial is black and the watch is fitted with an alligator strap of the same colour, while in the version made of red gold the dial and strap are an elegant brown which harmonises perfectly with the special ecru-coloured Super-LumiNova®.

While the design of the watch is closely linked to the history of the brand and inspired by it, the choice of materials and the manufacture P.9000 calibre demonstrate Panerai’s continuous commitment to research and development into the best technical solutions. The steel of the new Luminor Marina is AISI 316L stainless steel, an alloy with a low carbon content notable for its high resistance to corrosion. The red gold of the more elegant version is 5Npt: a special alloy with an unusually high percentage of copper (24.1%) which gives more depth to the colour, and 0.4% platinum which helps to prevent any oxidation of the metal.

The movement of the new Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic is the automatic P.9000 calibre,completely designed and executed by the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel. It has a power reserve of 3 days and it is driven by two spring barrels wound by an oscillating weight which operates in both directions. The calibre is 13¾ lignes and 7.9 mm thick, with 28 jewels and a balance wheel which oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

So good news for those who find the 44mm is a tad too big...:)

ANTIGUA, APRIL 2012 - Officine Panerai is proud to announce the results of the 25th annual Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, the first stage of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2012. Throughout the five days, 56 sailing yachts took part to a series of races and events involving boat owners, crewmembers, sailing lovers and journalists who traveled to Antigua from every corner of the world to experience the most important gathering of classic boats in the Caribbean. The prestigious event culminated with Lone Fox being awarded with a Special Edition Panerai watch as the overall winner of the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta 2012.

This year, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the English Harbour, all eyes were undoubtedly on Eilean, the Bermudian ketch created in 1936 by the Scottish Yacht Designer William Fife III. A multimedia exhibition set up inside the charming, historical Georgian shipyard Nelson’s Dockyard, presented the history of Eilean, from her inception, to her discovery in ruin five years ago by Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati, to this year’s triumphant return home to Antigua. The exhibit showcased not only the staggering talent of the craftsmen who were able to restore Eilean to her original glory, but the beautiful features of the 1930s Fife.

Members of the rock band Duran Duran, who shot the video for “Rio” aboard Eilean exactly 30 years ago on these same shores, also took part in the festivities in celebration of Eilean’s return. Simon Le Bon, a passionate sailor himself, along with Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor were thrilled to accept Panerai’s invitation to return to Antigua and sail again on Eilean.

Amidst perfect sailing conditions and unwavering dedication from the crews, the yachts put on an unforgettable show on the English Harbour. Winner of the Panerai Prize for First Overall Classic Class was Saphaedra. Winning 1st Place in the Spirit of Tradition Class A was Rebecca. The winner of Vintage Class A was Mariella, helmed by Carlo Falcone with Dennis Conner. Eilean, helmed by Andrew Cully and, for several races, Simon Le Bon, won the Woodstock Restoration Trophy in Vintage Class A for Best Restored Yacht. Dorade won First Place in Vintage Class B, and also was the Overall Winner for the Concours d'Elegance, with Eilean receiving a special mention from the jury.

Its the PAM390, a special edition available only via the boutiques. Limited to 2000 pieces. Thanks to the SG boutique for making this happened. The PAM390 is one of the watches that I really liike.

So what's so special about the PAM390? From my point of view, it has :
- brown dial
- gold hands
- base model (yes!)
- new look of the dial that is similar to the PAM372 (so on valentine's day, my wife can wear the PAM390 and I can wear my PAM372..;) )
- nice case back with SLC

This is what I like about PAM127 - the iconic subsecond dial besides the 9 :



Side by side case comparison. PAM372 (top) and PAM127. You can see the difference in the case design. PAM127 has a thicker lugs. The crown-guard level opens in opposite directions : PAM127 opens from the bottom whereas PAM372 opens from the top. The case for PAM372 is like a Radiomir case with lugs and crown guard :



Both are really nice watches.
For PAM127, if there is no '1950' on the dial, it would be perfect.
For the PAM372, some collectors that I have spoken to felt that the hour-hand is a tad too short and thus not proportional. Not an issue for me though..:)

MAY 2012 - Ten years after the inauguration of its manufacture in Neuchâtel, Officine Panerai announces the start of work for creating a new factory into which all the activities of development, production and assembly of the brand’s watches and movements will be transferred and brought together. The new production facility will be opened at the end of 2013 and it will be at Pierre-à-Bot, on the heights above Neuchâtel. Its birth will complete
the progress which in just a few years has established the Florentine brand all over the world as one of the most important productive expressions of haute horlogerie sports watches.

The new factory will be a remarkable means of optimizing the production process in terms of both quantity and quality. At the moment, the stages of development, manufacturing the various components, assembly and quality control are all carried out by Officine Panerai internally but they take place in different production sites. The unification of the various stages in a single location which is also significantly larger will bring several benefits to the
production, to the benefit all admirers of Panerai watches: higher capacity, greater independence in all stages of production and better quality control.
The new Panerai manufacture will have an area of 10,000 square metres in which there will be 290 employees, 130 more than the 160 who are currently employed at the building in the centre of Neuchâtel, where the brand is located at the moment.

In addition to the production lines, equipped with the very latest technologies, there will be space in the new manufacture for all the trades related to the prototyping, production, assembly and rigorous quality control of the components, movements and cases of Panerai watches, trades that are carried out by master watchmakers and their highly skilled colleagues.

Inside the new building there will be a large space for the Workshop of Ideas, the area where all the research and development activities which for years have been behind the innovative drive of the brand will be consolidated. Materials research, the study and design of new movements together with the continuous refinement of the quality and creativity expressed by its products are fundamental requirements of a brand which finds in its
history and its military origins the need to surpass its own standards so as to meet the requirements of its demanding customers.

As has always been the case, the activities of the manufacture at Neuchâtel will carry out the completion and execution of the creative ideas of the Panerai designers who contribute to preserving one of the most distinctive elements of the brand: the combination of Italian history, design and passion with Swiss precision, craftsmanship and technical watchmaking knowledge which makes Panerai watches unique and immediately

Mechanical models, exhibits operated directly by the user and interactive touch screens illustrate the innovative intuitions and solutions through which Galileo introduced revolutionary new ideas in the architecture of the universe and the science of motion. His ideas also led to the creation of ingenious devices for transforming the primitive, mechanical clocks in use at the time into reliable instruments. Thanks to these innovative solutions, Galileo hoped to solve at last the crucial problem of determining longitude at sea.

In these three new rooms, visitors will journey along the pathways that led to Galileo’s confirmation of the Copernican structure of the universe thanks to the telescope; to his definition of the strict mathematical laws that rule the phenomena of motion; and to his discovery of the isochronism of the pendulum, a true milestone in the history of timekeeping.

To celebrate Galileo’s contribution to modern horology, Officine Panerai has offered fundamental support to the realisation of the interactive area. It has also constructed and donated to the Museo Galileo the Jupiterium, an exceptional planetary clock with a perpetual calendar, which shows the movements of Jupiter and its four satellites discovered by the Tuscan scientist. Standing at the centre of the second room, the Jupiterium shows with extreme precision the positions of the Moon, the Sun, Jupiter and the four Galilean satellites as seen by an observer on Earth, against a background of fixed stars.

The last of the three rooms in the new interactive section displays a spectacular working reconstruction of the Planetary Clock designed by Lorenzo della Volpaia for Lorenzo de’ Medici and completed in 1510, in addition to the complex mechanisms of some ancient turret clocks.

– that of using the motion of Jupiter’s satellites as a perfect planetary clock
