UHO (Unidentified Horological Object) Spotted at Panerai Booth at the SIHH

Hi everyone,

This particular watch was spotted by myself and several other journalists at the Panerai booth last month.

mod_embed_images_loadimage('b2bcd104a2134428f86f77eb586fa771', 'http://revo-online.com/forums/main/addon.php?17,module=embed_images,url=http%3A%2F%2Fi116.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo34%2FJackForster%2FSIHH_2012%2FDSC01641.jpg', 'http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o34/JackForster/SIHH_2012/DSC01641.jpg', 'http://revo-online.com/forums/main/addon.php?17,module=embed_images,check_scaling=1,url=http%3A%2F%2Fi116.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo34%2FJackForster%2FSIHH_2012%2FDSC01641.jpg', '', 1005413, 1300, 3000, 'Loading image ...', false);

A few things are obvious: it's not part of the official SIHH press kit, and Panerai is not releasing any further information about it at this time. What we do know is that it's obviously a pocket watch, and based on the blurry pictures all of us seem to have shot (the pictures are rather funny to look at on various forums and blogs; nobody seems to have gotten a clear one and they remind me of the pictures you see of UFOs or Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster) the movement appears to be an openworked version of the calibre P2005 tourbillon.

The case and chain both appeared to be ceramic as well.

And. . . that's it. We'll have to wait and see what the official announcement brings but for now, all we have are a few hastily grabbed photos of a watch that has excited a lot of interest but which for now remains at least partly shrouded under a cloak of secrecy.

since pocket watch is quite niche market. Thus good to have a prototype to get feel of the market response.

Dears,
thanks for your efforts in discovering what this "thing" is....:S

But actually i think this is simply a very smart marketing move.
It is not common that a brand like Panerai releases a piece "accidentally" during a watch fair...Without additional informations !!

I believe they simply wanted to check the reception of such idea...A pocket Panerai.....If directly delivered to public as regular production in let's say 500 pieces worldwide it might have been a risk anyway (production costs, image, etc) while checking journalists and web reaction during a fair may be a good indication whether to follow this path or not.

Just my two cents...

ciao,

This is a prototype. As such, there is no official documentation or information available for this piece.
It is based on a Tourbillon movement, but is also partially skeletonized.

Sorry, that's all I have from the official source...:)
