Dear Friends,

I have just been informed by Patek that yesterday the opened a new "Patek Philippe Owners" area on the Patek web site - you will find a link to it on the right-hand site of the bottom navigation menu.

In order to obtain your login credentials you will have to be registered as a Patek Philippe owner, which you can also do via the Patek web site.

This is Patek's first foray into creating exclusive content (video, technical articles, etc.) for their customers, which they feel confident will enhance their experience of the brand.

Will their own discussion forum be next? :)

The Patek Philippe Boutique located in the Tiffany & Co. flagship New York store is celebrating its fifth anniversary with the introduction of a men’s and a ladies’ wristwatch jointly developed by Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. The timepieces are double-signed Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. and will be sold in a limited edition exclusively through Tiffany’s Patek Philippe Boutique and other authorized Tiffany & Co. locations nationwide.

The Ladies Gondolo timepiece (Ref. 4987G) is inspired by the Art Deco period and features a curved, tonneau-shaped case in 18K white gold accented with 164 round brilliant-cut diamonds (0.63 ct). Two dial options marked with Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. signatures are offered: a mat blue sunburst dial with white painted Roman numerals featured on a dark blue satin strap or a white mother-of-pearl dial with powdered gold Roman numerals featured on a vanilla satin strap. The limited edition comprises 50 pieces of the ladies’ model, 25 of each dial version.

The new Men’s Annual Calendar watch (Ref. 5396G) was created especially for the boutique’s anniversary. This elegant timepiece in 18K white gold features day, date, and month in apertures, moon phases and 24-hour indication on a black dial and a mat black alligator strap. The black dial is double-signed by Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. The sapphire-crystal case back reveals the caliber 324 S QA LU 24H and features an exclusive engraving “Patek Philippe – A Shared Vision – 2008-2013 – Tiffany & Co”. The limited edition comprises 100 pieces of the men’s model.

Opened in 2008, the 280 square meter boutique was Patek Philippe’s first boutique in the U.S. Located on the mezzanine of Tiffany’s Fifth Avenue flagship store, the New York boutique showcases current collections, as well as timepieces on loan from the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva that embody the tradition and innovation for which the famous watchmaker is renowned.

Forget movie stars, F1 pilots, basketball players, football teams . . . if you are a real watch fan the provenance of this Patek Philippe chronograph will light up your day like a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice.

This watch belonged to renowned Patek Philippe régleur Jaques Golay.

Notes for this lot, No. 582, to be auctioned by Antiquorum Geneva on November 11th.

An superb example of the steel reference 1463, the case with crisp and sharp angles and almost no signs of wear, the ‘respirations’ or asthmometer dial is exceptionally rare in this reference with only one other watch known, a pink gold example that was sold by Antiquorum, Geneva, October 4th, 2009. The present watch is quite possibly unique in stainless steel with asthmometer dial, certainly it appears to be the only example to have appeared at auction to date. This watch was the personal property of the famous Patek Philippe régleur Jacques Golay and its interesting history is detailed in a letter from his son Jules which is included with this lot. Upon inspection it was realized that although the movement is numbered 868889, the case is in fact un-numbered but otherwise bearing the 1463 reference number, Patek Philippe signature and the usual case marks.

According to Jules Golay, his father Jacques finished this watch whilst working in the atelier of Fils de Victorin-Piguet, part of the Patek Philippe group of companies. As Golay made and fi nished the watch for himself the case simply remained un-numbered, never having passed through that process or having been sold in the usual way which may also account for the perhaps unique combination of asthmometer dial and steel case. The asthmometer scale gives the dial a very unusual and visually dramatic appearance, leaving a large blank space in the upper left-hand quarter. Jacques Golay was a famous and highly respected ‘régleur’, one of the highly skilled watchmakers able to adjust watches to levels of extreme accuracy. He was awarded in 1941 the Guillaume prize by obtaining the best accurate timekeeping between his watch and the Le Coultre & Cie tourbillon regulator N°34748. The regleurs were the highest paid workers in the watch industry because success in the Observatory trials for watches conferred reputation and prestige on the brand and therefore greater commercial success.

Asthmometer Indicating the number of respirations per minute. Calibrated for 5 respirations, the chronograph hand is stopped after the patient’s 5th respiration; the dial then gives the number of respirations per minute.

After more than two years of restoration and significant revamping, Patek Philippe is opening the first Maison Patek Philippe in China in the historic Bund area of Shanghai. This new exclusive venue marks seven years of growing success in the Chinese market developed with long-standing partner Melchers Group. The company’s presence in China began with the inauguration of a Patek Philippe Boutique in Shanghai in 2005, now to be replaced by the Maison Patek Philippe, and of a second Boutique in Beijing in 2008. The Maison Patek Philippe will offer Chinese watch collectors and enthusiasts an intimate place to share views and knowledge of fine timepieces as well as to experience the exceptional brand heritage of the famous Genevan watchmaking company.

Opening Ceremony of the Maison Patek Philippe

The official opening ceremony of the Maison Patek Philippe was hosted by Patek Philippe’s Honorary President Philippe Stern, alongside current President Thierry Stern and Managing Director Claude Peny, in the presence of Zhou Wei, Mayor of the Huangpu District, and Matthias Claussen, Managing Partner of Melchers Group. “The new site of the Maison Patek Philippe has a unique geographical advantage and cultural background. We wish to demonstrate our brand history and values to a growing number of watch lovers in China. Buying a Patek Philippe watch is also about sharing the passion and dedication of several generations of a family-owned watch company,” said Thierry Stern.

The ceremony took place at Shanghai’s Waitanyuan Cultural Square situated behind the Maison Patek Philippe. Attending guests and government officials had the opportunity to discover the world of Patek Philippe in Geneva through a 3D projection “mapping show” on the building’s façade. It conveyed a sense of the brand’s identity and traditions embedded in a universe recreated at the Maison Patek Philippe in Shanghai. In the grandstand structure built for the event, guests were invited to enter the world of Patek Philippe in Geneva, complete with live lake views recreating the outlook from the Geneva Salon’s 5th floor. In special themed workshops, guests enjoyed a demonstration of the sublime sounds of minute repeaters presented by trained watchmakers and explored a unique exhibition of the chronograph collection – a truly memorable experience for watch lovers.

In this distinguished location of Shanghai, the first Maison Patek Philippe bears a unique status and architectural style that will delight enthusiasts of beauty and art.

As opposed to the existing Patek Philippe Salons in Geneva, Paris and London, the main purpose of the Maison Patek Philippe in Shanghai is to bridge the vast geographical distance between Europe and China and create a new Patek Philippe home away from home. “We want to welcome our Chinese guests in a place that is unlike any boutique or shop, one where they will feel totally at home, personally hosted by Patek Philippe,” said Philippe Stern. “This marks our intention to enhance our service-oriented market strategy along with our brand’s commitment to China.”

Beautiful Architecture and Interior Decoration

The Maison Patek Philippe is located in the historic Bund area, a neo-classical and colonial style district offering spectacular views of Shanghai. It shares ground with the former British Consulate built in 1849 and embodies a blend between Chinese and Western cultures. The Maison Patek Philippe is housed in the former British Consul’s Residence, a building that dates back to 1884, at No. 33 Waitanyuan, on the converging point of two rivers. Shanghai opened up its port to foreign trade at this historical starting point. Great care was taken in the restoration phase to preserve the original two-story wood and brick structure of Roman and Corinthian styles, thus restoring the former brilliance of a historic landmark in Shanghai.

As is a tradition in the family-owned company, Gerdi Stern, wife of Philippe Stern and mother of Thierry Stern, put her whole heart into the interior decoration of this new Patek Philippe home. All the furniture and artistic ornaments come from Switzerland, France and Italy, adding a touch of grace and nobility. The invitingly warm salon atmosphere is reminiscent of the classical elegance of Napoleon III, accented with Louis XVI antiques. Crystal chandeliers tailor-made by Bagues, a purveyor to the French royal court, were installed in the halls and display rooms. The showcases are built in wood and finished with paint and gilding. Every detail and work of art was carefully selected to allow visitors to experience the Patek Philippe universe of aesthetics, culture and hospitality.

Covering an area of 1,227 square meters on two floors, the Maison Patek Philippe spans nine rooms including the main exhibition hall, which accommodates the complete Patek Philippe current collection, the largest collection on display in Asia.

Special Collection of Timepieces

To commemorate the opening of the Maison Patek Philippe, the brand organized a special one-month exhibition displaying twenty-two rare handcrafted objects of art including a cloisonné enameled Dome table clock, a Dome table clock in hand-engraved Baccarat crystal, a hand-engraved pocket watch and two unique Haute Joaillerie wristwatches. All of these timepieces are unique treasures of art that traveled from Geneva to Shanghai to celebrate the inauguration of the Maison Patek Philippe.

Moreover, Patek Philippe specially designed a limited edition series of four commemorative watches in platinum celebrating the Year of the Dragon with a cloisonné enameled dial featuring a Dragon motif. In addition, a special Shanghai World Time model was created in a limited edition of 50 pieces, 25 pieces in rose gold and 25 pieces in white gold with a 24-timezone dial indicating Shanghai in red instead of the usual time zone indication of Hong Kong.

The legendary Star Caliber 2000 timepiece was also brought from Geneva to Shanghai for the inauguration ceremony. With 21 complications, this exceptional timepiece is the world’s third most complicated pocket watch. From 11 May to 13 October 2012, the Patek Philippe Museum is hosting the Rousseau watchmaking dynasty

On the occasion of the three-hundredth anniversary celebrations of the birth of Jean-Jacques Rousseau organised by the City of Geneva and in the context of its “2012 Rousseau pour Tous” (Rousseau for All) programme, the Patek Philippe Museum and the Comité Européen Jean-Jacques Rousseau (CEJJR) present an exceptional exhibition. “Timepieces Signed Rousseau” is taking up residence at the Patek Philippe Museum from 11 May to 13 October 2012.

The exhibition showcases horological masterpieces from the 17th century: some thirty precious and rare timepieces from the collections of the Patek Philippe Museum, prominent museums and private collections. Constituting a vibrant tribute to the Rousseau watchmaking dynasty, they bear witness to the extraordinary manufacturing expertise of the Geneva Fabrique, an institution that from the 17th century onwards made the City of Calvin the cradle of fine watchmaking. Accompanied by a selection of archive documents, the watches on display invite visitors to discover a fascinating century where time won its spurs through the hand of man.

Under the name of the “Fabrique” were organised all of Geneva’s jewellery and watchmaking industries, in the form of independent workshops based on the apprenticeship system and grouped together in the Saint-Gervais neighbourhood. Transmitting their know-how from generation to generation, the master watchmakers and jewellers, along with the goldsmiths, enamellers, miniaturists, engravers, chasers and other artisans of the corporation, were zealous in pursuing and developing their métiers. Jean Rousseau, Jean-Jacques Rousseau's great-grandfather, belonged to this aristocracy of craftsmen. His seven sons followed in his footsteps, some as watchmakers, others as goldsmiths, engravers or lapidaries. Thus did the Rousseau dynasty occupy the horologically related trades.

From his youngest age, Jean-Jacques used to observe his grandfather David in his watchmaker’s atelier. It was there that he would realise the value of the craftsman's work. From this immersion into the precision of the act and of the mind, he developed a structural approach to thought as attested in this excerpt from Emile: “I am like a man who sees an opened watch for the first time and, although he did not know the use of the machine and had not seen the dial, should not cease to admire the result. I do not know, he would say, what all this is for, but I see that each piece is made for the others, I admire the craftsman in the detail of his work, and I am very sure that all these gears go thus in concert for a common end which I cannot perceive." (Book IV, OC p. 578)

Among the works shown here, more than twenty were signed by a member of the Rousseau family. Through the variety of shapes, decorations and mechanisms is revealed the astonishing freedom of creation of the 17th and 18th centuries. From memento mori to cross-shaped watches, coach watches to complicated timepieces, all are imbued with exceptional aesthetic and technical creativity. Here a miniature enamel painting embellishes a cover; over there, a finely chased decoration graces a case. Every detail crystallises the mastery deployed by the makers of time from past centuries. In the course of the exhibition, viewers can take a swath of history to heart through the saga of the Rousseau dynasty and immerse themselves in the Age of Enlightenment: the century that, beyond the realm of pure philosophy, consecrated the artisan as the emblem of reasoning with one’s hands.

Rousseau the philosopher, Rousseau the writer, Rousseau the politician, Rousseau the interdisciplinary sage… This man of greatness marked Western history and society for eternity. His convictions on liberty and intuitive conscience and on freedom of expression and thought, in addition to his analytical and contemplative sensibilities, have undeniably contributed to the aura of the city of Geneva.

The exhibition catalogue presents a collection of scientific and historical articles that provide a fresh perspective on the effervescent period of the 18th century. Highlighting the value of the Rousseau legacy, the authors portray a Geneva undergoing rapid expansion. A look at the Rousseau family tree reveals that Isaac Rousseau, the father of Jean-Jacques, worked as “watchmaker to the Sultan” on the banks of the Bosphorus. He studied the context of Calvin’s sumptuary laws of 1558 and the organisation of the famous Fabrique, and followed the aesthetic evolution of watches from their beginnings until the 18th century.

A window opened onto a creative past, “Timepieces Signed Rousseau” has been set up as a place of memory. The exhibition’s inauguration is taking place on the 10th May 2012, in the presence of Philippe Stern, honorary president of Patek Philippe; Rémy Hildebrand, president of the Comité Européen Jean-Jacques Rousseau (CEJJR); and Sami Kanaan, president of the Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Geneva.

The Comité Européen Jean-Jacques Rousseau, founded in 1995 in Geneva comprises a group of Rousseauistic authorities. Under the presidency of Rémy Hildebrand, the organisation unveils the highlights of Rousseau's life in Switzerland and in Europe. The CEJJR was the driving force behind the creation in 2002 of the Espace Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the house of his birth at 40, Grand-Rue in Geneva.

Since its opening in 2001, the Patek Philippe Museum has had on display one of the most prestigious horological collections in the world. Some 2,000 watches, automatons, precious objects and miniature portraits on enamel provide an overview of more than five centuries of the Genevan, Swiss and European watchmaking heritage.

The circle of classic Patek Philippe chronographs closes

Traditionally, Patek Philippe's classic chronographs can be assigned to one of three categories: simple chronographs, simple chronographs with perpetual calendars, and split-seconds chronographs with perpetual calendars. This tradition has been upheld with the CH 29-535 PS proprietary caliber that was launched in 2009 in a basic configuration that would later allow the addition of a calendar module and a split-seconds mechanism. The Ref. 5170 presented in 2010 and the Ref. 5270 introduced in 2011 are now joined by the new Patek Philippe split-seconds chronograph Ref. 5204 with an all-new caliber developed in-house: the CHR 29-535 PS Q.

Two years ago, connoisseurs and collectors already began to speculate that Patek Philippe's coveted Ref. 5004 split-seconds chronograph in a classic manually wound design with a column wheel and a horizontal clutch, as well as a perpetual calendar, would some day be superseded by a new split-seconds chronograph based on the manufacture’s proprietary CH 29-535 PS caliber. But even experts were surprised how quickly the suite of in-house chronograph versions was completed. The intention behind the annual flow was to present a complete line of chronograph models based on the new proprietary movement as soon as possible, an initiative that yet again demonstrates the competence of the independent, family-owned manufacture. The ambitious project has now been completed.

Straight from the source: eight in-house chronograph movements in record time

For decades, Patek Philippe’s emphasis has been on crafting its movements in-house and endowing them with the manufacture’s inimitable signature. But for a long time, there was an exception to this rule: Until the CH 29-535 PS chronograph caliber was launched, Patek Philippe classic chronographs were powered by the 27-70 caliber. It was outsourced from Nouvelle Lémania but in a modified version built to the manufacture’s specifications and crafted exclusively for Patek Philippe. The caliber was always assembled and completed in Geneva, and in the opinion of many aficionados, it was the world's best and most beautiful chronograph movement.

This was the benchmark to be eclipsed in the new millennium with the launch of a unique chronograph initiative that subsequently culminated in 2005 with the development of the CHR 27-525 PS, the world's thinnest, split-seconds chronograph; in 2006, with the self-winding CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H chronograph caliber with an Annual Calendar; and in 2009, with the manually wound, column-wheel-controlled CH 29-535 PS chronograph with a horizontal clutch. The mission was accomplished, as evidenced by the applause from every corner of the horological world. This paved the way for enriching the classic chronograph series with different degrees of complexity based on proprietary calibers. Together with the three Patek Philippe basic chronograph calibers and the chronograph module for the Triple Complication Ref. 5208, eight chronograph movements were launched in merely seven years.

These eight chronograph calibers belong to the current portfolio of over 50 movements developed and crafted in-house. It includes 17 basic calibers for wristwatches with a broad repertoire of simple manually wound and self-winding movements, calibers with tourbillons, perpetual calendars, the Annual Calendar, minute repeaters, and astronomical functions, etc.

Ref. 5204: Innovation rooted in tradition

The new Patek Philippe split-seconds chronograph with perpetual calendar features all the traditional assets that impress true connoisseurs – manual winding, two column wheels, horizontal clutch – yet it is also the most modern representative of its category. This is due on the one hand to the CH 29-535 PS basic caliber whose six patented innovations are summarized in Annex 2, and on the other, to the perpetual calendar presented to the world in 2011 with the launch of the Ref. 5270. Accordingly, the new CHR 29-535 PS Q split-seconds chronograph caliber also beats at a frequency of 28,800 vps (4 Hz), features an instantaneous 30-minute counter and a continuous seconds subdial, and has a power reserve of 65 hours. But the splitseconds mechanism was totally reworked and updated with two technical innovations: an innovative isolator for the split-seconds lever and the patent-pending mechanism that optimizes the congruent alignment of the split-seconds hand and the chronograph hand.

1. Isolator for the split-seconds lever

The isolator for the split-seconds lever uncouples the split-seconds wheel from the chronograph wheel as soon as the split-seconds hand is stopped to display a lap time. Because this interrupts the contact between the split-seconds lever and its heart cam, the stopped split-seconds wheel cannot influence the amplitude of the balance.

The polished column-wheel cap is a venerable Patek Philippe tradition. In the new CH 29-535 PS basic chronograph caliber, the column-wheel cap handles the extra function of an eccentric that allows incomparably finer adjustments. With the integrated swan’s neck that serves as an isolator spring, the cap on the split-seconds column wheel has now been given an additional function as well.

Ref. 5004: The isolator for the split-seconds lever relies on an isolator wheel that is driven by an octopus wheel (O) (isolator wheel / splitseconds spring wheel) on the split-seconds column wheel and uncouples the split-seconds lever as soon as the split-seconds clamp (C) closes. Because the octopus wheel consistently rotates in the same direction, it always has to be returned to its home position together with the split-seconds lever; this is done by the isolator wheel spring as soon as the split-seconds clamp opens again.
Disadvantages: The disadvantage of this design is the extra height needed by the isolator wheel spring that sits on the split-seconds wheel (I). Because the springs of the split-seconds lever and isolator wheel act in opposite directions, the isolator wheel spring must also overcome the force of the split-seconds lever spring to rotate the unidirectional isolator (octopus) wheel back to its home position.

Ref. 5204: The unique Patek Philippe design is based on an isolator (A) controlled by the split-seconds column wheel (B ). As soon as the split-seconds clamp (C) closes, the beak (P) of the isolator falls between two columns and with its teeth advances isolator wheel (D) that uncouples split-seconds lever (E). When the splitseconds clamp is opened again, the beak (P) of the isolator is lifted onto a column; its teeth turn the isolator wheel in the opposite direction and the split-seconds lever is released again. The swan’s neck cap of the column wheel doubles as a spring (F) that constantly presses the isolator (A) against the split-seconds column wheel.
Advantages: The new design is thinner because it eliminates the need for an isolator wheel spring mounted on the split-seconds wheel (I). The isolator spring is part of the split-seconds column wheel cap. Unlike the mechanism in the Ref. 5004 in which the isolator (octopus) wheel rotates only in one direction, this isolator moves back and forth when the split-seconds clamp is opened and closed. This improves reliability.

2. Mechanism for reducing the offset between the split-seconds and chronograph hands

Split-seconds chronographs have two sweep hands: the chronograph hand (trotteuse) and the split-seconds (rattrapante) hand. The split-seconds wheel with the split-seconds hand rotates together with the chronograph wheel to which the chronograph hand is attached; both wheels are connected with the splitseconds heart cam that is mounted on the chronograph wheel. As is the case in all mechanical connections, the ruby roller of the split-seconds lever requires a minimal amount of play to function flawlessly. However, this play can also result in slight deviations of the position of the split-seconds hand when both hands should be precisely superposed. As a rule, this is concealed by making the chronograph hand slightly wider. As such, this would not be a serious shortcoming, but then again, it is at odds with Patek Philippe's quest for perfection. For this reason, the workshops' caliber engineers developed an innovative solution for which a patent application has been filed.

When the split-seconds hand is stopped to display a lap time, the contact between the split-seconds wheel and the split-seconds heart is interrupted because the split-seconds lever is isolated (see isolator). As soon as the split-seconds hand rejoins the chronograph hand, the ruby roller (M) of the split-seconds lever (E) rolls along the contour of the split-seconds heart cam (K) until it slips into a recess that defines the congruent position of the chronograph and split-seconds hands. Because of the mechanical play and movable ruby roller, this position may vary slightly and result in minimal superposition offsets. In the new Patek Philippe solution, the spring-loaded split-seconds lever has two flat contact surfaces (N) on either side of the ruby roller and the recess of the split-seconds heart cam has two flat shoulder zones. As soon as the ruby roller drops into the recess, the flat contact surfaces of the split-seconds lever come to rest against the flat shoulders of the split-seconds heart cam. For this reason, the alignment of the split-seconds hand is defined by the stable contact surfaces (N) and no longer by the movable ruby roller. This solution improves the positional congruence of the split-seconds wheel relative to the chronograph wheel by 75%. The result is the highly enhanced superposition of the split-seconds hand and the chronograph hand when the chronograph is in the start position or when the split-seconds clamp is released.

The new split-seconds isolator mechanism consists of 42 parts and with a height of 1.7 mm, it is 0.16 mm thinner than the isolator ensemble of the Ref. 5004. The height of the new Ref. 5204 movement is 8.70 mm compared with 8.86 mm for the movement of the Ref. 5004.

A calendar for eternity

The perpetual calendar mechanism of the new classic Patek Philippe split-seconds chronograph was presented in 2011 with the debut of Ref. 5270. It is composed of 182 individual parts and occupies 1.65 mm of the overall movement height of 8.70 mm. This testifies to the manufacture's competence in dealing with complex components such as large levers, date wheels, day and month stars, leap-year cams, lever springs, and other intricate parts. In Patek Philippe timepieces, the appeal of such components lies not only in the precision with which they were crafted but also in the lavish finishing work invested in them, such as gently concaved and polished chamfers, manually satin-finished flanks, and straight-grained surfaces. The steel wheels and pinions are also meticulously finished: all teeth and leaves are individually polished by hand using a rotating hardwood disk. This work is done not just for the sake of beauty. Smoothly polished surfaces generate less friction, reduce wear, and transmit kinetic energy more efficiently.

Complexity within, order and clarity on the dial.

Despite the complexity of the elaborate going train, the split-seconds chronograph, and the perpetual calendar, the well-organized dial presents the twelve separate indications with exemplary clarity and legibility. It features the typical face of classic Patek Philippe calendar chronographs as did the Ref. 5270, only this time with the addition of a split-seconds hand. True to tradition, the day of the week and the month are displayed in two in-line apertures beneath 12 o'clock. The analog date dial at 6 o'clock incorporates the moon phase display. The continuous subsidiary seconds and the jumping 30-minute chronograph counter are located at 9 and 3 o'clock, respectively, in dials whose centers are shifted slightly below the horizontal centerline of the main dial. This layout is a typical design feature of the movement. The small round aperture between 4 and 5 o'clock indicates the leap-year cycle, and a second one between 7 and 8 o'clock accommodates the day/night indicator that simplifies corrections of the calendar functions. The silvery opaline dial is crafted from 18K gold; it has twelve applied baton hour markers in white gold with luminescent fillings. Together with the black-oxidized gold hour and minute hands, also with Superluminova fillings, the markers assure outstanding legibility in the dark. The intelligently configured dial sets the stage for one of the most popular and useful functions of a grand complication wristwatch.

A stylish platinum case for the top model

As the apotheosis of Patek Philippe's classic chronograph trilogy, the new Ref. 5204 is housed in a platinum case with a diameter of 40 mm and a height of 14.19 mm. The sleek, round, three-part case with straight lugs has a cambered crystal secured in a concave bezel; the sapphire-crystal display back can be replaced with a solid-platinum case back that is delivered with the watch. Because it is exceptionally tough and difficult to machine, platinum always challenges the skills of casemakers, imposing considerably more stress on the tooling than other classic case materials such as gold and steel. But in return for the hard work involved, it stands out with an incomparably cool silvery gloss and a physical mass that underscores the class of this timepiece in a very palpable way. As with all of the manufacture's platinum watches, the case is marked with a flawless Top Wesselton diamond discreetly set between the lugs at 6 o'clock, where it is noticed only by the wearer. The round start and stop pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock, and of course the pusher in the crown that controls the split-seconds hand, distinguish this model from simple chronographs with perpetual calendars. The new Ref. 5204 split-seconds chronograph with perpetual calendar is crafted with all meticulous attention to detail mandated by the directives of the Patek Philippe Seal. It is worn on a handstitched, matt black alligator strap with square scales, and secured with a very comfortable and convenient platinum fold-over clasp.

Elegance begins with the movement

The movement of the Ref. 7140 is the sine qua non of an ultra-thin and strikingly elegant perpetual calendar model. It is the legendary caliber 240 Q assembled in the manufacture's ateliers for complicated watches. Composed of 275 individual parts, it is only 3.88 high, despite the fact that it is self-winding. This feat was made possible by recessing the off-center 22K gold minirotor in the plate, combined with an ingenious arrangement of the mechanisms for the perpetual calendar and the moon-phase display. With a mechanical memory of 4 years or 1461 days, the perpetual calendar always indicates the correct date, automatically taking into consideration the months with 31, 30, or 28 days, and the 29th of February in leap years. If the watch is regularly worn or kept in a winder when off the wrist, it will take until 2100 before the calendar has to be manually advanced by one day: according to the Gregorian calendar, the year 2100 is a so-called secular year that omits the 29th of February. In the category of grand complications, which includes tourbillons, minute repeaters, or split-seconds chronographs, the perpetual calendar unquestionably offers the greatest everyday utility because it always indicates the correct date by taking into account the different durations of the months. Perpetual calendars were coveted complications in Patek Philippe pocket watches dating back to the 19th century. And when wristwatches became fashionable, the manufacture in Geneva was the first to miniaturize the ingenious calendar mechanism to such a degree that it would fit in cases for the wrist, which incidentally were much smaller then than they are today.

It was 1925 when Patek Philippe presented the world's first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar. Watch No. 97'975 displayed the hours and the minutes from the center, the seconds in a subdial at 9 o'clock, and the moon phases at 3 o'clock. Its analog calendar indicated the date with a hand from the center, the day of the week at 12 o'clock, and the month at 6 o'clock, taking into account leap years but without actually displaying the 4-year cycle as is customary today. The calendar functions were implemented as instantaneously jumping displays – a particularly challenging degree of difficulty.

Around this time, the Art Deco movement established itself in Europe. With its clear and creative style elements, it influenced the fine arts and architecture, furniture, and product design in a distinctive way that has lost none of its persuasive eloquence. Patek Philippe embraced the style as well. Not as a short-lived trend, however, but as a sustainable design philosophy that continues to manifest itself in the Gondolo collection. The class of so-called form watches includes all timepieces whose cases are not round. Form watches can be square, rectangular, or triangular as well as rhombus-, tonneau- and cushion-shaped. The still young and readily visible wristwatch soon acquired the status of a design accessoire and remains very much en vogue to this very day. At Patek Philippe, cushion-shaped watches were highly popular, and some models can now be admired in the showcases of the Patek Philippe Museum. Alongside the round Calatrava classics, the unique Golden Ellipse, and the inimitable, casually elegant Nautilus, they are envoys of Patek Philippe's timelessly beautiful design language.

The cushion-shaped case experienced a first renaissance in 2010 with the ultra-thin split-seconds monopusher chronograph Ref. 5950 in stainless steel, and now, it stands in the limelight again with the new ultra-thin perpetual calendar Ref. 5940. With a length of 44.6 mm and a width of 37 mm, it features a very contemporary format with strong masculine appeal due to its modest height of merely 8.6 mm. In the high-tonnage presses at Patek Philippe's workshops, the slender silhouette is literally wrought out of 18K-gold blanks with the traditional cold-forming technique, followed by numerous consecutive machining steps. Finally, long hours of manual work are invested in polishing each case to a mirror gloss. It has gracefully curved flanks that appear to melt into the seamlessly integrated strap lugs. The watch is delivered with a sapphire-crystal snap back, which allows the owner to observe the consummately finished movement at work, and with an interchangeable snap back in solid yellow gold.

Caliber 240 Q: a legend for eternity

The caliber 240 Q movement is a masterpiece of technology crafted in its entirety in the manufacture's ateliers for complicated watches. Composed of 275 individual parts, it is only 3.88 high, despite the fact that it is self-winding. The basic movement launched in 1977, with a 22K-gold off-center mini-rotor recessed in the plate, already accounts for 2.53 mm. So merely 1.35 mm remain for the mechanical memory that spans an entire 4-year cycle and at the same time emulates the lunar orbit. The perpetual calendar always indicates the correct date, automatically taking into consideration the months with 31, 30, or 28 days, and the 29th of February in leap years. It does not need to be corrected until 2100, a secular year that omits the leap day pursuant to the rules of the Gregorian calendar. But this adjustment can be made quickly and easily, and thereafter, the watch will continue to display the correct date for the next 100 years, provided it remains wound without interruption. The moon-phase display is similarly accurate: it deviates from the true position of the moon by one day every 122 years, which is equivalent to a daily error of 0.002‰. And finally, the rate accuracy of the movement – responsible for timekeeping precision – is impressive as well. It ranges from -3 to +2 seconds per day as stipulated by the directives of the Patek Philippe Seal for all mechanical movements with diameters of over 20 mm. This beats the values required for officially certified chronometers.

A timelessly elegant face

This stunning rate accuracy is celebrated on a dial that deserves the attribute timelessly elegant in every respect. It has a grained, cream-colored surface that perfectly matches the gold hue of the case and is framed by a black transfer-printed railway-track minute scale that faithfully follows the contours of the bezel. Applied Breguet numerals as well as slender, leaf-shaped hands in gold indicate the time, accompanied by three subsidiary dials for the calendar displays. At 9 o'clock: the day of the week and the 24-hour dial. At 3 o'clock: the month and leap-year cycle. At 6 o'clock: the analog date and the moon phases. All indications are well organized and crisply legible, as is customary at Patek Philippe.

With its new Ref. 5940, Patek Philippe opens up a new chapter in perpetual calendars with the revival of the cushion-shaped case that looks as topical today as the 1920s and 1930s Art Deco showpieces in the Patek Philippe Museum that inspired it. The stately timepiece is worn on a matt black hand-stitched alligator strap with square scales and a prong buckle in 18K yellow gold.

Dear friends,

first of all, apologies for not having brought you the Patek novelties sooner - I had of course attended Patek's press conference on Wednesday afternoon, and taken pictures of all the watches a bit in a rush in between the end of our press conference and the next. However, as I went to work on the pictures that evening to post them here, I realised that my camera's flash, normally set to commander mode and not contributing any light to the actual exposures, was actually set wrong, and I had bad highlights on most of my photos (of course not really visible on the camera's back!!!).

So Patek were kind enough to allow me to reshoot everything today, and I will slowly be posting my pictures as I process them... I hope that you will enjoy them anyway, despite the delay!

I suppose that in 11 years of Basel and SIHH it had to happen someday...

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – World-renowned Patek Philippe, family-owned watch company, brought the inaugural “Watch Art Grand Exhibition” to Dubai. It took place from the 24-27th January 2012. The exhibition will continue to travel the world after its inauguration in the Middle East, a region which has long appreciated the company’s art of watchmaking and a region with whom the Stern family, owners of Patek Philippe since 1932, have developed strong ties as well as family friendships. Next stop for “Watch Art Grand Exhibition” will be Germany in 2013 and the United Kingdom in 2014 which coincides with Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary year.

This unique exhibition, offered a rare insider’s perspective into the art of watchmaking within a familyowned company. Visitors were able to explore as many as 400 exhibits presented in eight themed rooms. On show was the complete collection of Patek Philippe timepieces, including complications and grand complications ranging from perpetual calendars to minute repeaters, such as the most complicated Patek Philippe wristwatch: The Sky Moon Tourbillon. Also on exhibit, were one-off pieces, featuring rare artisanal skills such as engraving or enameling, as demonstrated in the handcrafted Dome Clocks, as well as over 60 timepieces from the Patek Philippe Museum including very rare, pre-Patek Philippe era, antique portable watches dating back to the 16th century and very early Patek Philippe watches pieces from the 1860s.

The jewel in the crown of the exhibition was the Patek Philippe Star Caliber 2000 - nine years of research and development were invested into the creation of this masterpiece, which has 21 complications and contains six patented innovations. It features a Grande Sonnerie; the first of its kind that plays the correct sequence of the Westminster Chime.

This truly exceptional event was free to the public and allowed visitors to discover over 1500 Sqm of exhibition space , the recreated Geneva based environment of the company’s historic headquarters, its workshops and world renowned museum. Giving visitors the chance to experience the company’s history from its very origin in 1839.

From regional connoisseurs who have owned Patek Philippe timepieces for decades, to children school groups, “Watch Art Grand Exhibition” offered a compelling experience for a broad audience interested in the history, tradition and intricacy of watchmaking. Well, I have been mostly on the wonderful Cartier forum, and lately the JLC forum. Since I am looking for the most special watch of my life, I decided that I should investigate every possibility.
I dropped into the AD who sold me my Rolex Explorer, as I know they carry Patek Philippe watches. I really wanted to see the Gondolo model in white gold and/or the Calatrava in yellow or pink gold. The one I expected most to see was the Calatrava. The only model they had was a 31mm white gold, which I believe is called a ladies' model. However, they had the one that I hoped most to see:

It is very hard to describe the beauty of this piece - and I realize it probably appeals to a fairly limited audience - as there is no single photo I have seen yet that comes close to how this watch looks in real life! I don't know how many here have actually seen this model, it would be interesting to hear the reactions of those who have. I can best describe the dial as looking much the same shade as the strap: a beautiful tobacco colour, darker for sure than the pictures I have seen. It looks absolutely stunning with the strap, and the contrast with the white gold. Not being a big fan of white gold, I can see why the choice for this is the white gold. Stainless steel or platinum would also be appropriate, although I don't think there are any Patek Philippe models in stainless steel.

The watch is extremely comfortable, especially with the slightly curved case. Very thin case, the movement being only about 3mm thick. I was surprised at the high vibrations per hours (over 28,000), for a manual wind movement, although I am certainly no expert of movements myself. I also took note of the beautifully sculpted sides of the case, and how the crown blends in almost seamlessly with the sides.

I have tried the Cartier tanks, and later on today I tried on my first JLC, the new Grande Reverso Ultra Slim in red gold. A beautiful watch, but I found the gold a bit too coppery for my liking.

What else can I say, except that the Patek Philippe has spoiled me for any other. I am anxious to see what next week brings - as we all are - in the Cartier Tank models, hopefully something with a simple dial and manual wind. I was really hoping for a rose or pink gold, to be my only gold watch, but in this case I would be more than willing to make an exception. This is undoubtedly the fines interpretation of the Art Deco style I have ever seen in any watch. The shape of the case, and the design of the dial, including the font, the small seconds and especially the colour make it stand out in a very subtle and unique way. This is one piece that has to be seen to be believed, as I feel that no photos can do it justice.

I know that a lot of the Patek Philippe models have a relatively short manufacturing run time. At my AD, we discussed a number of such models. If this is indeed the model I choose, I shall have to wait almost a year before I can purchase. I am wondering if anyone on this forum has had such an experience. I guess to put it simply, the matter of waiting and then being disappointed. Having said that, there are always new models and collections coming out, so even though we don't always get what we want on the first go, often something better comes along. At the moment, though, I can't think of anything better than the Gondolo that I had on my wrist!

As promised, here are the pictures of the PP 5207 which my friend recently bought.

For aesthetic reasons, I chose to change the serial number of the watch instead of blurring it, as I thought this would look better in the pictures. The easiest way to do this was to replace the last two digits of the serial number with the first two, so my apologies in advance to the future owner of watch number 5000550 - this is obviously not his/her watch! :)
