Debuts at Art Week Miami

Miami, Florida (December 7, 2012) – The Freedom Tower alligators that have caused so much attraction took over the Mandarin Oriental for an evening of Miami beats, art and watchmaking on the beach. Girard-Perregaux, iconic luxury Swiss watch brand, who partnered up with the FOReverglades exhibit to encourage environmental conservation efforts, created a limited edition timepiece featuring the famous alligators and celebrated the launch of their new HAWK collection.

Two young watchmakers from their famed Manufacture and Sowind CEO (Girard-Perregaux and JEANRICHARD) Michele Sofisti flew in for the occasion and hosted workshops on the beach for guests who traveled to Miami for specifically for this evening. The focus of the celebration was art all around, Girard-Perregaux’s art of watchmaking, the art of interactive video installations, the art of cigar rolling and the art of FOReverglades by renowned artist William Sweetlove.

“We are very happy to be here in Miami Art Week”, said Mr. Sofisti. “Watchmaking is a beautiful art; our watchmakers treat every movement and timepiece with such care, love and passion. We are excited to be sharing this experience with Miami and art lovers.”

Tomás Regalado, Mayor of the City of Miami, joined the festivities and was presented with a FOReverglades limited edition watch by Mr. Sofisti for the city of Miami. “We thank the city of Miami for welcoming us into their beautiful home and congratulate them on their achievements with Art Week”.

In addition to the watchmaking workshops, the evening featuring other art exhibits in honor of Miami Art Week. Interactive video installations by Vimeo Best Artist winner Sweatshoppe kept guests “painting” images of the new HAWK collection while others enjoyed the work of Alec Bradley’s master cigar roller.

An onlooker said: “Girard-Perregaux has definitely left its mark in Miami”. Ironic considering all guests were gifted sandals with the brand’s name and FOReverglades alligator image printed on the base, thus, literally leaving marks on the sand as they walked about on the beach towards their watchmaking workshops.

The HAWK collection features the perfect balance between Girard-Perregaux’s 221 year-old history with modern design. As Mr. Sofisti would describe it: “It is not a sport collection, it is a lifestyle”.

The Red Ball is one of Melbourne’s premier events attracting more than 1,300 guests including Australia’s most distinguished. To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Red Ball, the Fight Cancer Foundation was thrilled to have their Patrons and internationally acclaimed stage and screen actors, Deborra-lee Furness and Hugh Jackman, wearing his Vintage 1945 watch in attendance.

All proceeds from the Red Ball will enable the Fight Cancer Foundation to continue their life saving work in giving hope to children and adults with leukaemia and other life-threatening cancers through treatment, research, care and support programs. In theological parlance, the watchmaker analogy suggests that if something as precise and intricate in design as a watch exists, there must necessitate a watchmaker attributed to its creation; in the same way, the complexity of our cosmos imply the presence of a higher power that brought it into being. While the argument is more than just a little debatable, the comparison between a watchmaker and a divine creator is remarkably apt. Such is the incredible craft and exactitude that goes into the making of a watch that it would come as no surprise if watchmakers were indeed gifted, supernatural beings.

Considering their importance to the industry, it is quite startling that the contributions of many watchmakers have been largely overlooked, and their lives an enigma. They are usually behind the scenes, working stealthily and steadily in their manufactures, constructing the products we have come to love. Just as movie buffs generally revere actors rather than the scriptwriters that bring the characters to life, many watch buyers tend to see watchmakers as just another cog in a lengthy gear train.

That is set to change with the release of the new online and print journal by Girard-Perregaux: The New Face of Tradition, Eight Young Watchmakers and the Art of Making Time. This journal delves into the lives of eight watchmakers from the brand, following them in their daily routines both at work and in their free time. Shifting the spotlight onto their watchmakers is not a common move in the industry, and this project will reveal not only what goes into the making of a watch, but also what makes the watchmakers who they are.

Speaking with four of the eight watchmakers involved, namely Frédéric Kuzniak, Inès Patoz, Lauriane Cassard and Mathieu Bergeon, we got the chance to fully understand the dynamism of these individuals; we also came to realize that the common obsession for sentiment and innovation is really what blurs the line between them, the creators, and us, the consumers.

For one, the inspiration that started them on the path of watchmaking is much the same as what draws us toward the timepieces they produce: the technical complexity that goes into each and every manually assembled piece. The amount of hours, effort and precision that go into making a single timepiece may come across as exorbitant to the common man, but to them, it is merely the means to an end. As succinctly summarized by Cassard, “the beauty of the products; the magic of the movements which makes its beats heard; the complex assembly of components” are the things that spur them on to create more, and better, timepieces.

Even so, they admit that the sheer mechanical rigor they put into each timepiece is but one-half of what makes a watch. The other half comes from the emotion and identity that comes with putting the watch on your wrist, and this is something that cannot be created overnight. To Bergeon, a watch has to embody “tradition, intuition and curiosity”, and that comes from the history and heritage of the brand, coupled with the personal experiences and creativity of the team behind the product. It is this that differentiates timepieces with similar technical specifications, but come from different manufactures, and makes the brands in the upper echelons of the industry more appealing — and more valuable — than their less illustrious counterparts.

It is perhaps also in this age where differentiation is a prized attribute that the youth and vibrancy of these stellar individuals really come into their own. With the surging demand for luxury products, consumers are no longer just buying whatever a manufacturer creates. Instead, they want to have a say in the creative process, and expect a level of self-customization that would allow them to stand out among the growing number of watch owners. Essentially, Patoz believes, they are looking for “a unique watch for a unique person”. And this should be the way forward for the industry. Far from just sitting behind their desks in the manufacture, they are looking forward to utilizing this project as a means of getting closer to the people who purchase their products, and building products that are definitively Girard-Perregaux, and at the same time, unique to its wearer.

Just as the title of the journal suggests, there is a strong belief that moving forward and looking back need not be mutually exclusive. Girard-Perregaux has had a long and rich history in the field of watchmaking since its founding in 1791, and this heritage is still very much what has guided the brand till today. Designs like the Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges are still in production today, and is the perfect example of what these watchmakers believe in: evolution. The act of balancing the past and the present is something extremely delicate to achieve, yet is something indispensable to the continued success of the brand.

While the young watchmakers are definitely comfortable showing off their expertise and opinions in the field of watchmaking, we would expect them to feel at least the slightest tinge of queasiness at being monitored Big Brother-style for an extended period of time, and having every moment — the more-than-occasional bad hair day included — broadcasted to followers around the globe. Yet perhaps it is their youth that makes them not just undaunted, but even eager for this opportunity to open themselves up for scrutiny. It is a chance to showcase not only what they do, but also their other passions, interests and hobbies — or in the words of Kuzniak, that they “have a life besides work”.

Avid environmental conservationists, Susan and David created this event to celebrate the world’s oceans and raise public awareness to the plight of ocean health and the need for its protection.

Unfortunately one month ago i had to make it serviced again because it was still stopping.
The overhault was done quickly and last friday i was in Milan Sowind group site to receive my watch back.
The reason of the failure was the second wheel bridge slightly bent which, from time to time, was blocking the second wheel and the whole mechanism. Reason for this is difficult to say but it might be due to a sudden force applied to the second wheel / pinion. Given that this extra force should be received by the barrell, the barrell was replaced too.

This gave me the chance to look at the level of finish of components that are well locked inside a 1000m waterproof case....:





I don't think that divers' owners think much to this, but the level of finishing and hand work hidden is really huge !!

I bought a third Girard Perregaux High Frequency Chronometer with Calibre 32A in the back tonight. Please have a look at the link. There's no "Upload Photo" option. The world's most common online marketplace struck again. For those who saw my last post, it probably isn't surprising that I bought another. If anyone has one with original dial and good case, feel free to PM me.

The good thing about collecting these rare watches, is that the more plentiful second generation high beat, such as movement calibre 42.1 can be substituted for parts, according to my trusted watchmaker. Just as well, because on 570 were made.

From what information I have and simple observations, the first generation, comprising of the 32.8 and 32A (in that order) are the hardest to find. Second generation are easier to find and the third generation, comprising of calibres like 441 seem to be common as the base model Gyromatic.

When new, these watches were guaranteed to a mean variation of 2 seconds per day. To me, that is incredible! Regular chronometers even now only have to adhere to -4/+6 seconds per day.

I have my first two purchased Chronometers in the workshop at the moment, as one needs a complete strip down and repair, including case restoration, and the square needs a new stem. Both of the circular cased examples have the same batch number, (762), but who knows how big batches were? Not me.

If Peter Conrad from Germany frequents this forum, I'm sure he could definitely provide more information. He is infinitely more knowledgeable on GP than I am at present.

With its hand at 4.30, the equation of time indicates the difference between the real solar time and the mean or civil time. The length of a solar day actually varies daily due to the elliptical shape of the Earth's orbit. This astronomical complication is based on an ingenious mechanism incorporating an annual disc with an elliptical cam that reproduces the Earth's movement around the Sun.

Taking technical sophistication even further, corrections to the calendar are made with the crown, in both directions. The system is simple to use and the absence of a corrector on the case leaves the purity of its harmonious curves intact.

The refined lines of this model reflect the craftsmanship of a sophisticated design. Created in the Manufacture workshops, its harmoniously curved case is 40 mm in diameter and its profile presents a remarkable silhouette. The entire ensemble has been meticulously crafted for perfect comfort and finished with care in order to reveal the precious nature of pink gold. The open case-back reveals the movement and its oscillating weight. The timepiece presents delicate decorations crafted with respect for the strictest watchmaking traditions. The flat surfaces are circular-grained, sunray-brushed or decorated with Côtes de Genève, while sharp edges are chamfered then polished, as are the flat-head screws.

The ruthenium-adorned dial was designed to offer an original, harmonious display. Delicately sunray-brushed, it is enhanced by baton-type applied hour markers and fine leaf-shaped hands that add to its clarity. The counters with their precise markings increase the readability of the functions.

As maybe some of you remember, I have often underlined how the GP forum here is a bit less filled of news compared to other brand forums on Revo-online.
Being me a fan of the brand, and having had the chance to keep in touch with some GP manager in the past, I had the crazy idea to propose a “virtual interview”, in order to fill this apparent gap of information on Girard-Perregaux.
My proposal was surprisingly accepted by GP management, so I wrote a list of questions I had in mind since some time, send them to GP and after a while I received the feedback you can read here below.
Before you start to read, allow me to say a big thank you to Mr. Stefano Macaluso and his team for their confidence in answering.
To me this is the proof that even if sometimes the world of high watchmaking appears far, it actually is not.


During the last months PPR Luxury Group became the majority shareholder of Sowind Group (which includes JEANRICHARD and GP). What can you say about the influence that becoming part of a huge luxury group will have on Sowind Group and especially on GP ?

This strategic decision on our part does not affect the strategy of the Sowind Group and its brands. Girard-Perregaux in particular is one of the most respected manufactures in the history and the world of Haute Horlogerie and will remain true to our incredible legacy and rich DNA. Yet, it gives the means to maximise their potential for growth and innovation by leaning on a major luxury player who can help us with its knowledge in retail networks for instance. We had often discussed this option with my father. Sowind is a family business joining a Group which is also family-run and whose DNA is based on entrepreneurial culture. Last, brands are at the heart of PPR’s operation and enjoy broad autonomy, essential to ensure their identity and creative expression.

Even if in the past year several new watches were released by GP, we haven’t heard any major technical news lately.
I am thinking in particular of the very innovative Constant Escapment. Since its presentation no further news were released.
Can you tell us more, both on development side (prototypes) and marketing side (delivery to public) ?

Innovation when managed in serious way, requires focus and time. We have heavily invested over the past 20 years in R&D, specifically for movements. Today, Girard-Perregaux has one of the most comprehensive movement portfolio in the watch industry. Tell me how many watch manufactures have 4 different base calibres and can claim to fit their own movements in nearly 100% of their watches. Beyond this, we have introduced some of the most surprising and innovative concepts in the past years. Our Constant escapement is a genuine revolution in the way to manufacture movements.
Originally we presented an escapement concept/prototype and not a complete movement or a even a watch. It was the result of fundamental research on the regulating organ of the watch. Since then, we have brought several modifications to this escapement concept and in parallel, are developing a movement to be fit with it. Our plan is to present a watch ‘regulated’ with this escapement in 2013 at the latest.

Is GP going to follow the current trend towards innovative and exotic materials within its regular production calibres (for example silicon hairspring and escapment wheel, anchor, etc) ?

We always keep an eye on the future and high-tech materials that could offer interesting opportunities.
Yet, the use of new material has to be meaningful. We do not want to use silicon components for marketing purposes but because it opens new perspectives and because it creates value for our clients. Take the example of our Constant escapement. Developing this concept would have been probably impossible without using silicon. Its strategic component is a silicon blade with a width of 20 microns. The high elastic limit of silicon, its weight and the precision allowed by DRIE technology were key to make things work.

GP is well known for being one of the few true manufacture in high watchmaking. Which is GP’s definition of “Manufacture” ? Is being a Manufacture still important today ? Do you think it is really possible to be a full Manufacture (starting from the last screw to the complete watch) ?

We have invested massively over 20 years to build what is one of the very few genuine manufactures. I believe that the concept of manufacture is linked to a global mastery of all watchmaking crafts and techniques, to an holistic approach of horlogerie, defining, creating, developing and producing. This global approach means added-value for our customers by creating authentic products with a true identity rather than a simple assembly of components. This approach means to constantly overcome challenges to achieve the highest level of quality.
This is why we design and manufacture movements, cases, bracelets, even some dials in-house.
Then, anyone familiar with watchmaking knows perfectly that a watch company cannot produce every single components on its own. For instance, manufacturing a sapphire glass would be a non-sense for us.

Can you anticipate some of next novelties coming from GP ?

We’ll disclose very shortly several novelties, specifically interesting developments for our Girard-Perregaux 1966 and Vintage 1945 collections.

Several watch brands base their marketing strategy on testimonials rather than on heritage values or technical capabilities. This last approach seems to be more recognized among long-time watch fans, while the testimonial-based one seems to target the young people. Did you ever think about having a high-visibility testimonial ?

As explained earlier, our focus has been mainly on our technical skills, our heritage and the unique character of our watches. This is one of the reasons why we have not taken this step so far. Yet, this is something I could be comfortable with as long as it is meaningful, in relation to our expertise.

Can you make a portrait of the typical GP client ?

I believe that one of the common characteristics of GP clients is their interest in the authenticity of our products. They are probably people who perceive the high-value of our watches and self-confident persons.

In the past years we’ve seen a tendency among many watch brands (GP included) to issue limited edition watches.
What is the approach of GP towards limited editions ? Don’t you think that luxury watchmaking should be by definition limited, without stressing that concept ?

Our production is by definition limited. We decide to issue limited edition when we plan from the beginning to manufacture not more than a defined number of watches. Then take the example of the Tourbillon with 3 gold Bridges. Given the level of craftsmanship involved in this manufacturing we produce less than 200 pieces every year, even if most of these are actually not limited editions.

Several watch brands started to work on Iphone apps. What GP thinks of this unusual marketing strategy ? Are we going to see some apps from GP in the future ?

Smartphones are dramatically changing our lives, to the point that I could hardly do without them today. We have developed a playful Iphone app several months ago, connected to the possibilities offered by Iphone, specifically with a try-on function, the opportunity to locate retailers easily or a ‘fun’ Jackpot Tourbillon game. You should try it!

What is GP approach towards the web ? Is there attention to watch forums ? How this new media influences the brand strategy ?

I believe that it is key to implement a 360° strategy with regards to communication and media. The importance of the digital world is more and more important every day and it offers incredible opportunities to connect with people. The presence of Girard-Perregaux on the web will grow inevitably.

One of the recurring topics in REVO-online is concerning customer support when a watch needs service.
Many forumists addressed issues related to timing, accuracy and costs. This seems to be a problem common to many watch brands. What about GP ? which is the policy, the organization, the objectives of customer service ?

Service is a key issues for the future of watch brands. Our manufacture status is also key in this regard. It allows us to retain the ability and expertise to repair watches in-house and we pay attention to pass-on our know-how to the next generation of watchmakers. For every new watch, we make sure to stock parts to be able to repair watches over time. We also have to think of our global presence to develop an efficient network at the international level. Service is not only connected to repairs. It is a state of mind. Clients are the priority, whatever the business.

What is the relationship of GP with other brands ? Is there only competition or also collaboration ?

The competition is global, we can feel it at every level: production, distribution, marketing, etc. This is something we have to work with and it is a source of motivation to overcome new challenges, push the boundaries ever further. Still, this can be faced with excellent relationship and respect with other brands. We collaborate with several brands at various level, for instance manufacturing movements or watches for competitors. I am always curious to face different realities whenever possible. We constantly learn from others.

Recently Mr Macaluso passed away. We have always considered him from an “horological” point of view but I’d like instead to close this virtual interview remembering him and highlighting his human qualities. Is there any episode you recall about him which can let us better understand how the man was ?

We have shared many extraordinary moments and projects, in family life as well as in business: racing rally cars, travelling, visiting art exhibitions and of course working on Girard-Perregaux.
Personally I prefer to remember the design meeting we had every week in La Chaux-de-Fonds for 9 years: we have spent unforgettable hours checking every single detail and proportions of case prototypes, movements finishing, dial indexes of many generations of new GP models.
His style was a mix of Italian culture of design and the sophisticated Swiss Haute Horlogerie tradition.
It has been a school of creativity even beyond the watch industry, it was a philosophy of life based on beauty (“bello” in Italian), art and fine craftsmanship embodied in a few cubic centimeters item.

During this summer I noticed that my SeaHawk GGYC from time to time stopped :( to work, even if full charged.
I bought it on 2007 so it was a bit early to me to have it serviced, anyway I took it to the local Sowind site (very close to my working place, so I took it personally) for a check and the repair/service.

Even if in the service estimation I signed it was stated that I should have waited 12 weeks, in almost half :D the time the watch was ready – and with great happiness I went personally to get it back few days ago.
The first thing I noticed when the watch was back in my hands was the work done on the case and buckle: they both seem brand new.
I’ve been provided with a brief report on the reasons for the malfunction; and also they gave me back the worn watch parts that has to be replaced (gaskets, escapement wheel, seconds wheel, barrel ratchet, winding stem, see them in the pix with an euro coin for comparison).



I do not think this is common, and to me is an interesting plus. Another interesting information I got while talking with Sowind responsible is that if daily used the watch should be serviced every 4 years approximately, to avoid have it stopped as happened to me.
This would mean that the service intervals should be shortened (or, seeing it in a different way, I need more X( watches to wear !!!).
Technically speaking, this underlines both the amount of friction between watch parts and the need for a good oiling.

As some of you may remember this is not my first experience with GP customer service; that’s the reason why I am anyway a bit careful in expressing already a 100% satisfaction, and now the watch is under my personal testing.
But it is my pleasure to underline the high level of service, especially in terms of time delivery, given what we usually hear when speaking of servicing a watch.

Just a note that I am truly impressed with Girard Perregaux for bringing this important exhibition to Singapore and other cities important to the watch collecting world (see watchculture amazing report at [bit.ly] ). Not only is the exhibition a treat for us passionate about watches, it shows the public that Girard Perregaux has been a part of the watchmaking history which has enriched the life of many watch enthusiasts and more importantly, it is also a clear demonstration of the Group's strong commitment behind Girard Perregaux heritage in haute horlogerie. Apparently, the holding company is not just an entity only accustomed to the fashionable mass luxury industry. My personal wish that Girard Perregaux shall remain unwaver in their small family like pursuit of high-end watch manufacturing!

In its Haute Horlogerie collection, Girard-Perregaux offers a contemporary version of its famous Tourbillon movement with three gold Bridges. A monochrome assembly in white gold, in a limited edition of 50.

Among the pieces produced by Constant Girard-Perregaux that led to the creation of the famous Tourbillon with three gold Bridges, a pocket-watch with three parallel nickel-plated bridges, made in the 1860s, was a precursor of his masterpiece. Awarded a first-class prize at the Neuchâtel Observatory, this creation already displayed bridges aligned in parallel, but the use of gold and the final arrow-shaped appearance of the bridges were yet to come. The limited-edition Vintage 1945 Tourbillon with three gold Bridges celebrates this heritage with more modern lines. Its rhodium-plated skeleton bridges with their pure, contemporary geometry, are the fruit of meticulous preparation: they are first delicately hollowed then carefully hand-polished. It takes seven days to achieve a perfect finish, especially in all the interior angles. The Tourbillon is also the focus of special attention, with its 72 components that have to be perfectly assembled within a diameter of 12 millimetres.




The rectangular case also contributes to the distinctive character of this timepiece. Inspired by a watch made in Art Deco style in 1945, it has been redesigned by the Manufacture. The case, with its convex profile and discreetly matched crown, harmonises perfectly with the wrist. The case-back of this exceptional creation has a sapphire glass to reveal the superb Haute Horlogerie finish of the Calibre 9600C.



This outward appearance is underpinned by technical mastery exemplifying the comprehensive skills of Girard-Perregaux. The Vintage 1945 Tourbillon with three gold Bridges is equipped with an automatic calibre designed – thanks to the Manufacture’s patented platinum micro-rotor mechanism incorporated under the barrel – to show to full advantage the architecture of the movement, emblematic of the Brand.

"Unveiling 220 years of watchmaking Art"


The exhibition was different as it not only showcased the various watches that were made during the important era of history but also incorporated other significant events of that time. Linking the watch made during Napoleon’s time or the building of the Eiffel Tower did give one an insight into the other aspects of history. It also engage your senses with different furniture pieces ( chairs in this case) and the music and video from that era. Short clips to some historic events were also shown in mini screens.
