Just fininished my meeting with Stephen Forsey and Robert Greubel and I have to saw that I was very impressed.
As you know Greubel Forsey first came onto the scene with their Double Tourbillon 30 Degrees which along with JLC's Gyrotourbillon were the only successfully industrialzed and chronometric multi axis tourbillons that emerged from the 2004 year of the tourbillon. What I admire about Greubel Forsey is that the company is dedicated to creating real horological achievement in a world filled with marketing hype. I applaud that they've done real testing to show the efficacy of their tourbillons. This year Greubel Forsey launches a full dial version of the Double Tourbillon that migrates the vantage point of the tourbillon completely to the back of the watch. This year they also launched the completed watch featuring the 24 seconds tourbillon that was unveiled in movement form last year. The surpring aspect is how thrillingly modern the finished watch looks, injecting a nice dose of vibrant contemporary feel to the already impresive acheivement. The 24 seconds tourbillon - which is also angled as with the Double - generates better timing results from averaging the positional errors at a faster rate than a traditonal 1 minute tourbilllon OK now, while I know this is a bold statement I have to say the third Greubel Forsey watch launched this year may be a front runner for the absolute most stunning timepiece of 2007. The Invention Piece 1 signals the beginnning of a new creative era for the brand - using the movements they created they will interesting new artistic expressions of depicting time. For this watch Greubel explains: it all started with the idea of our double tourbillon orbiting twice as a result of its two axes, from there it only made sense to create a time indication that also orbits around the tourbillon. The result is a watch that takes up where Opus 6 left off creating a remarkable ampitheatre of time telling indications in anodized aluminum surrounding the tourbillon. If that wasn't enough Greubel and Forsey have gained the rights to work with the diamond material pioneered by Ulysse Nardin for the Freak diamond heart and have created with it the world's first diamond balance wheel and spiral which are believed to be almost immune to the effects of temperature variation. Josh will post images of the three watches and off the diamond oscillator below. Cheers Wei |

Everything looks so fine and intricate. Takes detailing to a completely different level. Amazing pictures (and watches).

. . . of Greubel Forsey's presentations this year without even needing to compare them to any other watches. Invention Piece #1 looks to be one of the most, if not the most remarkable piece of watchmaking of not only this year but many years; it's interesting to see how avante garde watch design progresses from year to year and even more interesting to see who really succeeds at combining avante garde design with ultra-refined watchmaking. I'm absolutely blown away by these watches- they're tremendous examples of what a combination of genuine, uncompromising watchmaking and inspired design can accomplish. Even the most conservative of these three, the Double Tourbillon 30 Degrees, absolutely exudes the kind of aura that I usually associate with the most refined early 19th century Breguets or with work from the likes of Potter or Guinand- just superb.
Congratulations to Greubel Forsey and thanks Wei and Josh for bringing us these devastatingly beautiful images. Jack |

It's quite amazing how with the Invention Piece GF have pushed the boundaries of avant garde design alied with impecable craftsmanship. It just shows that you don't need titanium, carbon fiber and black PVD to be vant garde!!

I'm sitting here stunned... this is really a sight for sore eyes and although I know there are people like these two gentlemen G&F, I never expected something so terribly wonderful! A technical question aside: what's the material of Invention's face, please? Does anyone know? From my side it looks like ceramic...

Thanks Wei and Josh. There are just so many incredible novleties this year, it's getting tough to keep up. The Invention One is a really beautiful timepiece, much nicer than the Opus 6 IMO.

Invention piece 1 is absolutely incredible. Would this piece count as one of only 3 or so watches with a central tourbillon? It is brilliantly conceived and its aesthetics are just as refined.

but i dont get it. Those display backs do nothing for me and while i understand the brilliance of the "Invention piece" in words, the actual watch leaves me dead cold.
Its unreadable to me and doesnt look like a watch but a portable tourbillon. This tourbillon craze is really getting out of hand. The original article says that Greubel Forsey watches are more than just marketing hype, but isnt the whole 'tourbillon' concept pure marketing ? |
